Does having a baby in mid to late thirties delay menopause?

Interested in when perimenopause and menopause started for those that had last child in mid - late twenties vs mid - late thirties?

Following as I'm interested

My mum has me late 20s and her menopause started late 30s, which I know is exceptionally early. I do worry the same will happen to me.

Fifiellz · 14/05/2024 15:08

Had my youngest at 36 and no sign of perimenopause and all hormones still seem optimal at nearly 49

Baby at 35, on HRT & mirena coil fitted at 44 after 3 years of raging hormones, flooding, etc.

Justwanttotravel · 14/05/2024 15:14

Oldest at 35 and youngest at 39. Menopuase at 48.

Is this perimenopause ?

Not sure when you have a baby makes a difference, but I think there might be something in when you get your first period. Limited number of eggs and all that?

When did you start perimenopause?

whatnnoww · 14/05/2024 15:16

youngest at 37 - last period at 49 - peri started about 42 not that I realised at the time

SirChenjins · 14/05/2024 15:19

First period at 11
First baby at 28
Last baby at 38
Still having periods at 55 😭 (albeit they’re becoming slightly more irregular)

BobnLen · 14/05/2024 15:19

Only child at 35, menopause early 40s, I don't recall perimenopause so probably didn't affect me. My DM had her menopause late 50s.

goldenlloyd · 14/05/2024 15:20

I had my youngest at 39 and with that and extended breastfeeding, my cycle never went back to normal. I had about three periods since.

45 now and nearly at the two year mark to be considered menopausal, not peri.

So you skipped peri?

I'm sure I read somewhere recently that the age at menopause was related to the number of births they had. So the more births the later the onset of menopause. Or it might have been the more births the less chance of early menopause? Not sure the age of the mother for the births was related.

AlwaysClaretsometimesBlue · 14/05/2024 15:23

One and only child aged 37 after 3 Ivf cycles and other fertility treatments. Definitely peri by 48 but it's impossible to say exactly when the hormones started to decline. I was aware of raging hot flushes and irregular periods/flooding by 48 but I wasn't charting periods so I'm not sure when exactly they started to gradually shift.
There isn't a single factor to be able to say AHH I'm now in perimenopause.

WhatOnGodsGreenEarth · 14/05/2024 15:24

Had my youngest at 38. Perimenopause hit at 39……..

TheTimeTravellerswifeisaFraser · 14/05/2024 15:26

OP. This is a super complicated question to answer with population data because women who go through menopause early may not be able to have children in their mid to late thirties. So asking a bunch of mums on mumsnet for there experience isn’t going to help you, it’s just creating a self selecting sample.

BigBoysDontCry · 14/05/2024 15:26

I had my DC at age 34 and 35. I hit menopause in my early 40s and was period free by 45. So not true for me.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 14/05/2024 15:26

For what it's worth I had my only after years of infertility at age 37 (nearly 38). Birth complications required me to undergo an emergency hysterectomy. I then commenced hot flushes at age 51. My mum menopause's at 56 so I assume my hysterectomy may have brought my menopause forward by a few years, which is not uncommon.

urrrgh46 · 14/05/2024 15:28

First baby at 25 last and 9th baby (+ 5 miscarriages) at almost 45. Now 48 and still having completely regular periods. I think I might have a couple of signs of peri - my cycle is a little shorter than it used to be 28 days now from 32 previously and a little more irregular ie varies by a few days sometimes where it never used to at all. Also I get the odd night sweat. But other than that it's pretty much service as normal! I'm hoping that having had 9 full term pregnancies I do have a delayed menopause.

urrrgh46 · 14/05/2024 15:29

And given I have been breastfeeding for 20 yrs with no break who knows what normal is for me anyway 🤣🤣

goldenlloyd · 14/05/2024 18:33

Didn't mean for it to sound as if I'd skipped peri, OP!

I knew you are considered to have gone through the menopause after 12 months with no period, but apparently if you're early/ mid 40s it is two years (and that's nearly where I am up to).

No I don't think so, menopause age is generally genetic, if your mother had early/late menopause then you're likely to follow the same pattern, having babies late won't delay it...

Dahliasinallotment · 14/05/2024 18:44

I had a baby at 42, bf for 2.5 years and seemed to head straight into perimenopause. My periods never returned to 28ish days.

I didn't delay anything.
