Does having a baby in mid to late thirties delay menopause?

Interested in when perimenopause and menopause started for those that had last child in mid - late twenties vs mid - late thirties?

Wrong, having babies doesn't delay menopause, it's determined by your genes, if your mother or first degree relative has an early menopause then chances are you will too, by the time you reach menopause you're down to about 1000 eggs, which sounds a huge amount but it isn't really, most of them will be genetically compromised and of very poor quality as this explains How Many Eggs Does a Woman Have? - Clearblue

Wrong. Yes it is partly determined by your genes but the fact that you are not ovulating for 9 months whilst pregnant also means that you will have eggs left for longer than it if you had not been pregnant.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding may lower risk of early menopause, NIH-funded study suggests

Menopause before age 45 increases the risk of early death, cognitive decline, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

Had my kids in my mid thirties, menopause symptoms started the week of my 40th birthday.

My mum's family tend to hit menopause in their fifties, my dad's in their thirties. I think I was period free for four years altogether, so since I do tend to edge after my dad's family I would believe this.

I think the article I read was based on this study:

Baby at 37. I'm in bits at 47 with perimenopause

Have doctors finally tomorrow.

I had no idea things would get this bad :(

OP. This is a super complicated question to answer with population data because women who go through menopause early may not be able to have children in their mid to late thirties. So asking a bunch of mums on mumsnet for there experience isn’t going to help you, it’s just creating a self selecting sample.

I think this is the problem, if fertility declines about ten years before menopause those who have children in their late 30s are still fairly fertile and so are likely to have menopause later.

Sandwichgen · 15/05/2024 19:11

I had my last baby at 45 and my last period at 55.

I'm sure I read somewhere recently that the age at menopause was related to the number of births they had. So the more births the later the onset of menopause. Or it might have been the more births the less chance of early menopause? Not sure the age of the mother for the births was related.

Well I've had 5 children. Menopause at 50. Last baby at 43.

TeamPolin · 15/05/2024 19:15

Baby at 39. Started going into peri around 46. Went on HRT at 38 as was struggling. So timeline all very predictable really 🤷🏻‍♀️

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 15/05/2024 19:16

DM had me at 36, her period after that was the last. She had no other menopausal symptoms whatsoever and she’s 82 now.

Twizzletoe · 15/05/2024 19:16

First period at 11, children between 35 and 41. Now 56 periods still going but becoming more erratic and perimenopausal for sure

Twizzletoe · 15/05/2024 19:17

Should have said my mum had periods until 59!

Pootle40 · 15/05/2024 19:22

Had 2nd child at 39. Became peri menopausal at 45/46

ItsAStupidQuestion · 15/05/2024 19:24

First child at 38, second at 41.

46 now and my periods are still regular and no sign of anything untoward yet.

tinytemper66 · 15/05/2024 19:31

1st baby at 19; second at 28. 6/7 months without a period at 57.

rogueone · 15/05/2024 19:34

I had last child at 44 and considered post menopausal ages 54. Apart from the rage I didn’t have sweats or anything else. Nothing periods stopped and that was it .

I had a baby, conceived very quickly, at 38. Menopause started at 44 or 45. Perhaps I'm an outlier?

stealthbanana · 15/05/2024 19:37

Re the number of eggs thing - surely that’s not true as otherwise women who are on the pill for long periods of time would not reach menopause until their 60s/70s!

Ponderingwindow · 15/05/2024 19:42

this Is absolutely anecdotal, but my periods were getting erratic and full menopause appeared on the horizon. Then my dd started her period. My periods went back to clockwork synced to her schedule. It was like airborne HRT. That timing could not have happened without having a baby in my mid-30s.

it’s been a few years and my body finally seems to be trying to stop again.

Queencam · 15/05/2024 19:44

Isn’t it to do with your ovarian reserve - or AMH?

went through infertility and IVF so went through these tests.

eggs run out = bye bye periods

grinandslothit · 15/05/2024 19:45

Last child at age 26
Menopause age 55
That is having only one tube and ovary since age 20

haggisaggis · 15/05/2024 19:47

Oldest at 34, youngest at 37. Menopause 46

dizzydizzydizzy · 15/05/2024 19:48

I don't think it did for me. DC1 was
Born age 35 and a DC2 at 37. Not exactly sure when menopause happened because I am in the Mirena coil and it stopped most periods. Think it was early 50s.

FriedSprout · 15/05/2024 20:35

First baby - mid 30's - periods never came back - menopause! 🙁

SkeletonBatsflyatnight · 15/05/2024 20:38

Periods started at 10. Last baby born 6 weeks before I turned 41. Almost 47, periods still like clockwork, no obvious peri symptoms at all.

Wintersgirl · 15/05/2024 20:48

The fact that you are not ovulating for 9 months whilst pregnant also means that you will have eggs left for longer than it if you had not been pregnant.

Wrong again, the eggs don't get 'saved' just because your not ovulating they still continue to drop away, it's a natural process which continues pregnant or not

Dr. Suruchi Thakore The fact that your supply of eggs is continuously reducing needn't be cause for concern, however, as it is a natural and continuous process, completely independent of birth control pills, pregnancies, nutritional supplements, or even health or lifestyle.
