Does having a baby in mid to late thirties delay menopause?

Interested in when perimenopause and menopause started for those that had last child in mid - late twenties vs mid - late thirties?

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 15/05/2024 21:17

I had my 2 DC at almost 40 and 42 . Menopause at 54, period never came one month and that was it. No symptoms in the lead up or after 👍

CharlotteStreetW1 · 15/05/2024 21:19

My mum had me (no.5) at 40. She was still having periods in her early 50s (perimenopause hadn't been invented back then 😂).

I haven't had children so can't comment from personal experience except my periods stopped in my early 50s too.

First period 13
First baby 23

Peri menopausal at 53 but still having fairly regular periods.

earther · 15/05/2024 22:29

First period at 12.
Had my first baby at 16 last at 18.
Im 38 this year and in the mist of peri i have a 3 day light period one month and none the next so far 6 weeks and nothing.
My mother had me at 20 last baby at 36 menopause at 48.
My aunt had her last baby at 29 never had a period since shes 60 now.
Eldest sister first baby at 17 last at 40 same as my aunt never had a period after the birth same as my aunt no symptoms of anything.
Middle sister first at 19 last at 22 now 40 and peri as set in.
Above sisters twin first baby at 20 menopause at 37.
I dont think having kids delay menopause i think its down to our body`s and how they work for us.

Such an interesting post and fascinating reading the replies.
I began my periods at 9
One and only baby at 37 and peri symptoms started at 38. Almost 40 and in the throws of it.

LostittoBostik · 07/12/2024 06:20

Doesn't look like it in my case. Last baby at 38. 42 now and loads of perimenopause symptoms

ineedtostopbeingdramaticfirst · 07/12/2024 06:23

My mother and sister went through menopause in their late thirties. I had my last baby at 37 my symptoms started at 45.

HazeyjaneIII · 07/12/2024 07:44

Babies at 37, 38 and 41
Menopause brought on by total hysterctomy at 51 due to fibroids complicated by previous history (cancer at 24). No obvious perimenopausal symptoms before that.

MILLYmo0se · 07/12/2024 07:50

First and only child at 31, post menopausal by 37/38.
Afaik there is a belief that a late start to periods can mean an early menopause (not the link in my case) but there's not enough data collected on it

MILLYmo0se · 07/12/2024 07:51

And my mam was still in peri in her early 50's, my sister still having regular periods at 45

lottiegarbanzo · 07/12/2024 07:55

No

OP. This is a super complicated question to answer with population data because women who go through menopause early may not be able to have children in their mid to late thirties. So asking a bunch of mums on mumsnet for there experience isn’t going to help you, it’s just creating a self selecting sample.

I agree with this. I am 36 and just been referred to the menopause clinic. Have spent the last 18 months doing IVF with no luck. Early menopause can prevent you conceiving in your mid thirties in the first place. Thankfully I had DS in my 20s :)

lottiegarbanzo · 07/12/2024 08:02

But seriously, if you wanted to know the answer you'd be looking up scientific papers. Not chatting about self-selected random anecdotes with multiple unknown variables on Mumsnet.

No, I had a baby at 41 and was fine for a year till periods returned.

They were mega peri periods and the pmt, over heating at night, insomnia, joint pain, brain fog etc followed soon after. Was far too late getting hrt at 44. Then had to come of it a couple of years later anyway due to breast cancer.

However - now, with older kids and more knowledge, the incentive to avoid reoccurrence drove me into a lifestyle over haul. mostly non UPF food, 30 plants a week, more protein (mostly plant based) the right kind of exercise and resistance training has pretty much complete beaten the menopausal symptoms. Occasional insomnia and anxiety is the main thing now. It's taken a year and I'm also on tamoxifen.

Sleep, building lean muscle mass and gut biome have been the biggest factors imho.

Periods are sporadic. It's not menopause yet but I'm nearing it. 48.

whatnnoww · 07/12/2024 09:59

Babies at 35 and 37 , 42 saw start of perimenopause , last period 49

Lordemily50 · 12/12/2024 09:17

Surely menopause is when you run out of eggs. The number of eggs you have is the number of eggs you have. having children wouldn’t really affect the onset much, a year maybe?
