Anyone else excited about the women's euros? I'd love to follow the progress of the teams (especially England) with any football-supporting Mumsnetters. Thrilled that it's a home tournament, commiserations to Scotland and Wales for not making it through qualification. Huge congratulations to NI, qualifying for the very first time.

Doesn't have to be just match-related, either - comments on the background to each women's team (especially from non-British fans), and of course the kits all welcomed.

Sad Deserved win for France but they should have scored more with the amount of chnces they had.

I'd give lots of credit to Van Domselaar and Van Dergraagt (sp?). Unbelievable saves and defending.

We have a couple of days without matches, so this is the time to talk kits, fashion etc. Let me know

  1. your favourite kit out of those on display at the euros and/or
  2. your favourite style or look from the presenters.

My answer to 1 is a tie between the Portugal "away" kit - light greenish-blue with a border in the Portuguese flag colours two thirds of the way down the jersey - and the Belgium away kit in a lovely shade of light yellow with contrasting black piping. Special mention to England's multicoloured training tops and the piping detail around the sleeves and collar of the Germany kit.
2 - Farah Williams' hot pink jacket and shorts combo. Absolutely gorgeous - suits her colouring and her strong personality. I have really liked every outfit of hers. Also surprised myself by how much I loved Rachel Brown-Finnis' chintzy dress from the other day - floral pattern on an off-white background. And Gabby's colourful blocky-stripy jumper in the first week was fun, too.

Anyone else?

I will have to have a closer look at the kts, there wasn't one that stood out for me.

Presenters, I liked the colours they wore, so much better tham grey suits.

I also noticed that the players had practical hairsryles, mostly tied back, just to get on with playing, no fuss.

DuncinToffee · 24/07/2022 09:44

Van Domselaar and van der Gragt were immense.

France were exciting to watch, their match against Germany should be good.

BellaAmorosa · 24/07/2022 11:20

@DuncinToffee
Agree regarding the hair styles. Although I would prefer no long ponytails and braids.
It does make me chuckle that so many rock up in full makeup, though! But hey, they're on TV...

France needed that win psychologically. I still think Germany will defeat them, but if France score first and take control, they could get to the final.

I am 90% certain France will beat Germany. The other 10% days Germany due to France having played extra time.

BellaAmorosa · 24/07/2022 14:22

I actually really, really hope you're right, @Rooster25 , but why are you so sure? France have the talent and will be playing with less pressure but Germany's focus is relentless and they are a well-oiled machine. And they take their chances. FWIW, I don't think France will suffer from playing extra time. They look like a really fit side to me and (as I'm told) after 72 hours teams have fully recovered. France will have had almost 96 hours by Wednesday night. I would love an England-France final. (I'm not assuming England will beat Sweden, obviously).

IMO England’s best chance at winning the final (should we get there) is vs Germany not France. The reason being is that the France players play regularly on the same team as each other, for PSG or OL, with the former winning the champions league 6 times out of a possible 7, over the past 7 seasons. They are a team of serial winners in their prime.

BellaAmorosa · 24/07/2022 22:54

Yes, I see what you mean - the winning mentality and automatic understanding is there for France. But I worry that Germany and England are quite similar and when a team plays opposition which is similar but a bit better, they can get hammered!

I’m a bit concerned at England’s record against Sweden tbh … if I am reading the app correctly we last beat them before I was born?!

still I guess these actual teams have never played each other so it’s prob irrelevant

They are the highest ranked team left in the competition, so I think your anxiety is justified for that reason. Another point one of the pundits made was that Sweden struggle more against a compact, defensive side employing a low block than against a team which attacks and plays more expansively. So that could be a factor.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to tonight and hanging on to the feeling that this is England's year!

I'm really looking forward to the match tonight. I'd love England to make to the final, I don't know how the match will go though with Sweden being such a high ranked team.

Although I didn't think Sweden looked amazing in their last match, or in some of the other games which is giving me hope that England may just do it! It's definitely going to be a nail biter!

Collidascope · 26/07/2022 15:49

I'm already getting nervous about this match. I've a lot of faith in Sarina that I didn't have in Philip Neville or Mark Sampson, but Spain was such a tight, tense match. Really hope they can do it, and if not, well, the whole competition has still been an absolute boon for women's football.

Ditto regarding Sarina Wiegman.
It's all got really serious now we're out of the group stages, hasn't it? 😥

I know! My nerves were absolutely frazzled by the end of that quarterfinal, and I'm expecting we'll be in for more of the same tonight.
World Cup next summer too!

The BBC can fuck right off with their doom and gloom! The Lioness’s have finally made it to the lead item on the news, but all I’ve heard so far from this reporter is that they need to play better. Oh and apparently Arsenal now play at the Etihad! Wanker, you wouldn’t be this miserable if it was the mens semi would you?

@ForFiveMinutes 😁
Some serious lack of knowledge showing! When you think of all the hardworking would-be journalists on Twitter, etc who know the women's game inside out, you wonder why they don't get a chance instead of someone who clearly just doesn't care enough to get their facts straight.
And it wouldn't kill them to talk the Lionesses up a bit, surely?
