Has anyone else read this?

It is over and above my favourite book of the year. Highly reccomended.

It reduced me to tears in parts which happens rarely with books for me.

I have two others by him but found them very hard to get into.

Funnily enough, I was thinking about The Corrections yesterday, and whether it was due a re-read; I suppose I started thinking about it because of the time of year. I loved this book. It makes me wish I could write.

SmoothCriminal · 10/12/2009 09:51

Oh yes it's definitly one to reread. You are probably right about the time of year.

He has such a subtle way of story telling but built up the characters so well. I laughed and cried.

One day I will write a bok haha!

squeaver · 10/12/2009 09:59

Read it years ago but it has stayed with me.

I think he's a wonderful writer.

You'd like it, scargot

SCargot · 10/12/2009 10:00

thank you squeave.
sheesh

squeaver · 10/12/2009 10:01

NO that was the the other bloke - Million Little Pieces (something like that).

This was the one where Oprah wanted him in the book club and he said "no I am too lofty a writer for your pop culture nonsense". Still a good book, though for all that wankery.

ahundredtimes · 10/12/2009 10:01

Yes, I think you'd like it too. No, not the misery man one, someone quite different.

Interesting fact: the corrections was picked for the Oprah book club, and he refused. Imagine! Said it was a work of high literary merit.

ahundredtimes · 10/12/2009 10:01

Ah x post with Squeaver

orangina · 10/12/2009 10:03

The villified made up onw was A Million Little Pieces by James Frey (which I loved btw....). Also love The Corrections. Read it now if you haven't read it yet.

I do love a novel about dysfunctional families!

(Feels all warm inside and completely at home with the subject....).

There's a great Douglas Coupland one too....

(racks brain)

SmoothCriminal · 10/12/2009 10:03

I dunno I did tend to recoil from books that had 'Richard and Judy book club' stickers on the front. Maybe I'm a wanker too.

after loving the beleivers...

SmoothCriminal · 10/12/2009 10:04

All families are psychotic?

OP posts:
SCargot · 10/12/2009 10:04

ooh yes SC always take the stickers OFF

covycrump · 10/12/2009 10:04

Definitely worth getting SCargot, and I'm fed up with reading pregnancy & baby books (due 1st tomorrow) so I'm going to dig my copy out today and start reading it again. Just looking at wiki, and see that a film had been planned for years, with David Hare working on the screenplay.

orangina · 10/12/2009 10:04

All Families are Psychotic. Douglas Coupland.

SCargot · 10/12/2009 10:05

oh GREAT am so excited

SmoothCriminal · 10/12/2009 10:06

That wasn't a question that's the title of the book.

Not his finest. I prefer his 90's things.
