P;ease indulge my nosiness

haven't seen one of these threads for a while, & love scanning them for future reads.

I am reading The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Dickens) & One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest(Ken Kesey) Find msyelf swapping these two around according to my concentration levels but enjoying them both in different ways

On my To Read Next Pile is Revelation (C.J Samson -loved the first three), A Prayer for Owen Meany and This Thing of Darkness (Harry Thompson)

But I know when I;ve read two of those I will panic & need new ideas. Help!

'Revelation' and 'This Thing Of Darkness' both v good; in fact, the latter is brilliant.

I am reading 'Weaveworld' by Clive Barker - it is not very good. I then have either an Edith Wharton, a Daphne Du Maurier or Half Of A Yellow Sun waiting for me.

purepurple · 22/11/2009 15:09

I loved weaveworld.
I am reading book 4 in stephen King's dark tower series. Next is book 5

JANEITEisntErudite · 22/11/2009 15:14

I love The Dark Tower series, but liked 4 less than the others. Bits of Weaveworld I like but I am bored by all the Shadwell talks to angels stuff at the moment and it is too long and very over-written imho. I do like the bits with Cal though.

Prinnie · 22/11/2009 15:28

I'm currently reading Jane Eyre (can't believe it's taken me until I'm 25 - I love it so much) and I'm planning on Dr Zhivago next. (Currently working my way through classics - it's a fantastic journey

LaSoiDisantDame · 22/11/2009 15:33

I'm pretty sure all my ideas for my 'to read Pile' came from Mners recommendations

I think it was even you Janeite that recommended the Shardlake series! -not a stalker honest guv -

Never read Dark Tower series (how many altogether?) although I went through a real Stephen King phase (loved The Stand, Insomnia, Cell), don't know why I stopped really...

am definitely of you Prinnie reading JE for the first time...

keep em coming ladies

I think there are 7 Dark Tower books: I totally recommend them. Oh and I rec the Shardlakes to EVERYBODY as I think they are great!

Have you read The Lord Of The Rings? Also, if you don't mind children's books the Across The Nightingale Floor series is brilliant.

Alos - The Moonstone - finally read that this summer and it is great.

JANEITEisntErudite · 22/11/2009 15:39

Alos? Also!

purepurple · 22/11/2009 15:39

There are 7 books in the series. They seem to get longer and longer. I have been reading them all year.

Tillyscoutsmum · 22/11/2009 15:49

I've just finished Memoirs of a Geisha and am about to start The Frenchman's Creek

JeffVadar · 22/11/2009 15:49

I am reading Linda Grant's 'The Clothes on Their Backs', which I am enjoying.

Next I have got my eye on DS's copy of Inkspell.

I am also reading a Fred Vargas novel in French, but progress is pretty slow so I'm not sure that I can accurately describe it as reading...

I also loved 'This Thing of Darkness', and the Shardlakes

pointydogg · 22/11/2009 15:51

21st century Boys - sue palmer.

ANother question - where do people find the best suggestions for books to try? A newspaper? ONline searches?

LaSoiDisantDame · 22/11/2009 15:53

excellent, more reccommendations , I'm wondering now if TToD can live up to all these rave reviews..

Not read Lord Of The Rings, Don't mind children's books at all in fact I'm currently eyeing up DD's His Dark Materials set , Moonstone is already on myy wish list

(googling Across the Nightingale Floor)

I read first 3 Shardlake consecutively v quickly and started dreaming about The Tower, Cromwell, Henry VIII the lot...it was fantastic!

JANEITEisntErudite · 22/11/2009 15:54

You haven't read His Dark materials? Do it NOW woman! And read his Sally Lockheart series too.

LaSoiDisantDame · 22/11/2009 15:58

I know, I'm suitably ashamed of myself!

Pointy: MN, Friends & Amazon recommendations, although Mn is the best I think

OOh good thread

Currently reading: Quickening Maze by Adam Foulds, excellent so far

And waiting for me: Wolf Hall (Mantel) & The Year of the Flood (Atwood)

Tend to find MN good for inspiration but lately it's been a bit slow, no?

TheFoosa · 22/11/2009 17:09

I am reading American wife, alright but nothing special and book 5 os True Blood series

will read Knife of Never Letting Go next, borrowed from niece

imnotaceleb · 22/11/2009 17:12

I am reading 'The Road'

Next is Twlight (I know I am well behind)!!

purpleturtle · 22/11/2009 17:18

I have just read A Case of Exploding Mangoes, which I enjoyed, although it's not like most of those mentioned here so far. A little bit off the wall.

Am starting Kazuo Ishiguro's Nocturnes - have read about 5 pages and so far so good. I expect to like it.

JANEITEisntErudite · 22/11/2009 17:23

Knife Of Never Letting Go is v good. I want to read the follow-up but am waiting for it to come into the library.

upahill · 22/11/2009 17:25

I am reading 'The Villian' It's a biography of Don Whillians.

inthesticks · 22/11/2009 17:39

Just finished The Kite Runner and I hate that in between books feeling.
On my to read pile are Doors Open by Ian Rankin and Flesh House by Stuart McBride. Not inspiring me though.
On my books to get list are the Stephanie Meyer ones and The Grapes of Wrath.

krugerparkrules · 22/11/2009 17:49

her fearful symmetry (sp!!!) and about to read rose tremains restoration

RorysRacingMa · 22/11/2009 17:51

My friend Harriet Evans' new novel 'I Remember you'.
Next in the pile -The Boy in Striped Pyjamas

LaSoiDisantDame · 22/11/2009 18:02

loved Grapes of Wrath,

Restoration was good but found the main character repellent (I think that was the intention but it made it hard to read at times), much prefered Music & Silence

Just added to wish list: Knife of Never Letting Go & Inkheart (ostensibly for dd, actually for me )Quickening Maze and Weaveworld
