P;ease indulge my nosiness

haven't seen one of these threads for a while, & love scanning them for future reads.

I am reading The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Dickens) & One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest(Ken Kesey) Find msyelf swapping these two around according to my concentration levels but enjoying them both in different ways

On my To Read Next Pile is Revelation (C.J Samson -loved the first three), A Prayer for Owen Meany and This Thing of Darkness (Harry Thompson)

But I know when I;ve read two of those I will panic & need new ideas. Help!

Grapes Of Wrath excellent but devestating. I read it aged around 19 and have never been able to pick it up again.

I liked Restoration but can remember nothing at all about it. I liked another of hers too - something about a swimming pool maybe?

The Inkheart series is good.

Sandy22 · 22/11/2009 18:11

I'm reading the JR Ward books (black dagger brotherhood) about Vampires.

busymummy3 · 22/11/2009 18:11

have just finished reading 'sepulchre' by kate mosse ( not the supermodel !) yesterday. can recommend a very intelligent read.

MrsJohnDeere · 22/11/2009 18:20

Last week read P.D James' 'Private Patient' (disappointing, one of her weakest, imho) and - very to admit this one - Catherine Alliott's 'Secret Life of Evie Hamilton' (also crap, even by crappy chicklit standards).

Tonight's book will be something that requires more than 2 brain cells.

slng · 22/11/2009 18:45

Am reading Conrad's "The secret agent" and a bit shocked at what's happening though it seems to have taken its time getting to it ...

Next up: Lolita. Haven't got it yet but I'm sure you can get it anywhere (just not in our local bookshops ).

slng · 22/11/2009 18:48

busymummy - I was very disappointed with Labyrinthe by Kate Mosse. In fact I usually keep and reread my books, but I took this one to the charity shop straight away. Is Sepulchre better?

MaMight · 22/11/2009 18:53

The last book I read was Oscar Wilde and the Candlelight Murders which is a whimsical fiction by Gyles Brandreth, in which Oscar Wilde and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle solve a murder. It's a whodunnit. Fun.

The book I am currently reading is Alias Grace by Margaret Attwood. It is the second Margaret Attwood book I have read (after The Handmaid's Tale) and I am utterly adoring it. So readable and atmospheric.

Next in my library pile is The Thorn Birds which I don't know much about but is supposed to be good.

rootbeerfan · 22/11/2009 18:55

Short Girls by Bich Minh Nguyen - good so far

Nothing lined up next but thanks for the Harriet Evans tip-off, Rory - enjoyed her others

nymphadora · 22/11/2009 19:00

Currently reading the latest John O'Farrell book , modern history one? Its really funny

Just finished the latest Alex Rider and the latest Adrian Mole. Cant you tell it was my birthday last weekend

exexpat · 22/11/2009 19:08

Currently reading The Household Guide to Dying by Debra Adelaide (Australian, not as gloomy as it sounds).

Just finished The Gourmet by Muriel Barbery - not as good as The Elegance of the Hedgehog, but still enjoyed it, and very cleverly done (sometimes too clever).

Up next - can't decide from my large to-read pile, but will be reading this list for inspiration....

Just added The Secret Agent (Conrad) and The Elegance of the Hedgehog to list...

This is why I love MN

I hated Sepulchre.

I liked Oscar Wilde And The Candlelight Murders a lot. And Alias Grace.

Lolita is one of my favourite books ever. I love Anansi Boys and American Gods too.

I've just had an hour in the bath with Weaveworld and have nearly finished it - but I still don't like it!

TigerDrivesAgain · 22/11/2009 19:16

Great thread! Some inspiration here: was standing in Waterstones yesterday wanting a book fairy to tell me what to get....

Have just finished Richard Hammond's autobiography (not fiction obviously, a book group choice) - surprisingly good and moving. Before that it was one of the Jack Reacher books, bubblegum thriller but still fun. Just started "A quiet belief in Angels", looking good so far.

Can I second, or fourth or hundredth, This Thing of Darkness. One of the best books I've ever read.

JANEITEisntErudite · 22/11/2009 19:16

Don't like The Secret Agent - had to do it for A level.

busymummy3 · 22/11/2009 19:21

slng - sorry havent read labryinth was actually going to try and get it to read next. All I can say about Sepulchre is that it is set in France in 1891 and then 2007. involves Tarot cards and an American girl trying to trace her ancestors and putting right an injustice that happened over 200 years before.

LaSoiDisantDame · 22/11/2009 19:23

Hmm, like the look of American Gods too...

choices, choices

CUrrently reading 'the almond blossom appreciation society' by Chris Stewart. Not as good as teh first two I don't think but I read them ages ago (sort of travel biog principally set in Andalucia). Is for book club.

Next up either - my next one either the latest Patrick Gale or Twilight I think.

I loved Alias Grace - my copy disappeared (must have lent it out and it never returned. Hate it when that happens).

TheFoosa · 22/11/2009 20:09

I loved Lolita too but also hated both Kate Mosse books

slng · 22/11/2009 20:52

I read Alias Grace ages ago. Best of Margaret Atwood has to be the Handmaid's Tale. My copy has disappeared. Just goes to show you should never lend any book to anybody ever.

busymummy - I think I might have a problem with Sepulchre as well. Best give it a miss, I think.

I hated "The girl at the lion d'or" and have been avoiding Sebastian Faulkes. Am I right or is he better than that?

JANEITEisntErudite - I've never done English literature in school so have been spared compulsory reading, which may or may not be fortunate ...

FlyingMonkey · 23/11/2009 10:18

I'm three quarters of the way through The Private Patient by PD James. I will probably read The Law and The Lady by Wilkie Collins next.

CatIsSleepy · 23/11/2009 10:21

K-Pax now

next...I don't know, I have nothing lined up
