Am I the only one who doesn't get Twilight?

Love the film ( Who wouldn't love Robert Pattinson) but I've now read Twilight and New Moon and it's all right but I don't understand the hysteria?

Will I get it if I persevere with eclipse?

Nope, it's poorly written, derivative, uninteresting teen-tripe.

There's two hours of my life I'll never get back.

dalek · 27/10/2009 09:00

Glad it's not just me. Don't get me wrong - I love a good love story but this just doesn't do it for me - wouldn't do for us all to be the same

I agree with AvengingGerbil, liked the film though.

boundarybabe · 27/10/2009 19:15

DH got them free from work and they sat on the shelf for ages - then I read the first 3 in about 2 days (mainly because DS was a week old and I spent hours on the sofa). Then halfway through the last book I just though 'I don't care anymore' and I've never finished it.

They're alright as far as teen fiction goes but I fail to understand why they've been singled out - there's plenty of better vampire fic out there!

PersonalClown · 27/10/2009 19:18

Oh I get it but don't understand the hype aboutanything it.

It serves its purpose for me. A nice, easy read. Not too taxing on the brain and allows my mind to indulge my barely --legal- fantasies on EC/RP!

pointyhat · 27/10/2009 19:28

Just because a book sells well doesn't mean everyone gets it.

I wouldn't read Potter, Twilight, Dan Brown, maeve Binchy - many many best-selling authors. Doesn't mean there's something I'm not getting.

elsiepiddock · 29/10/2009 13:40

Have only cringed my way through read the first one.

Strictly for teens imo - very badly written tripe.

Jux · 29/10/2009 13:59

I read Twilight and thought it was for teenagers.

Wouldn't bother with the rest.

Tortington · 29/10/2009 14:04

i think if you were going to get 'it' you would have done so by now. book one - fall in love with edward. book two. introduce more of jacob. and pick a team!

jeam jacob all the way baby.

v. dissapointed in the 4th book and i wont be reading anymore

Bucharest · 30/10/2009 13:40

Drivel.

Battled my way (because I refuse to give up) through the first and second and a bit of the third, then just chucked it.

Not even well written derivative codswallop.

Just shite.

"hi, I'm Edward."

"Hi I'm Bella"

"I fancy you. I'm a vampire"

"doesn't matter".

Sandy22 · 30/10/2009 16:17

Personally I don't think it is badly written, shite or teen-tripe. I loved all the books except the 4th one - I for one am glad I read the books and for me it wasn't just for teens at all.

cocolepew · 30/10/2009 16:19

DD has read it and loved it. But she's 11.

Sandy22 · 30/10/2009 16:22

Yes my dd is 12 and also loved it but for completely different reasons to myself.

Jacksmama · 05/11/2009 16:35

Absolutely the worst trivial shite I have read in forever.

MintyCane · 05/11/2009 16:45

It is total rubbish.

blueshoes · 05/11/2009 17:02

Movie is much better than the book.

Book is meant for a teenage audience. I am well past that sort of obsessive intensity to actually want to read about it . How many times do I need to read endless permutations of how Bella's heart flips when she sees Edward?

Chickenshavenolips · 05/11/2009 17:07

Bucharest sums it up I've read the first two, and can't say as I 'get' it either. There is no character development, no natural story development, and I really wanted to slap Bella.

pagwatch · 05/11/2009 17:08

Um. I haven't read it so have no opinion but it is a book aimed at teenagers.

Of course it is trivial and crappy.

There are great examples of teenage fiction but expecting them all to be challenging and well written seems a little optomistic. And surely the hype around these makes it less rather than more likely that they will be deep and moving....
Or is that just me?

Jacksmama · 05/11/2009 18:13

I've been invited out by a group of girls to see New Moon in two weeks so I'm forcing myself to read the books... working half-time and with a toddler, I don't get out much so it sounded good at the time, but the books are so awful!!!!! Is the movie as cringeworthy? Because there will have to be some pretty good eye candy for me to sit through it, otherwise I will have to invent a crying baby emergency

Jacksmama · 08/11/2009 17:41

Ok, I had to go to Wikipedia and read the plot spoilers for the other books or I would have thrown this one in the bin... fortunately, although I'm sure the actual writing will continue to be utter drivel, the ending of "Breaking Dawn" is something I can live with.
Yesterday I went to our local huge book shop and was shocked by how much Twilight merchandise there is!! FGS, there were T-shirts saying "Team Edward" in Gothic letters. Personally, I find myself on Team Jacob. That is, if I were into the story enough to take sides

Gillyan · 08/11/2009 18:53

My friend MADE me and DP watch it the other night. Never read the books. I have to say I have not watched such a load of teeny bopping crap for many years ( I'm 27 ) It was BORING, nothing happened, very predictable. Very dissappointing!

Jacksmama · 08/11/2009 18:54

What have I let myself in for to say I'd go see New Moon?
Oh no... it's going to be awful

IrritatedMe · 08/11/2009 18:59

My sister raved about it. All I got from it was:

Edwards eyes change colour...alot.
First brown, then a chocolatey gold, now topaz, now more of a nougat hint, now a bit almondy with a hint of caramel, now broze but with flecks of black...yawn yawn yawn.

And has there ever been a heroine with so little personality or gumption. If I were her mum I would have left her up with her dad as well.

Jacksmama · 08/11/2009 19:01

I know, she's a gutless little twat, isn't she.

IrritatedMe · 08/11/2009 19:03

She must smell AMAZING otherwise surely there is no-one who would put up with the enormous gaping chasm that is her personality.

She reminds me of me when I was 14.
