I LOVE 'Mother Tongue' - absolutely fascinating and hilarious.

DreamingAboutSleep · 20/04/2009 16:48

Am trying to get to end of Shantaram, I loved the first half but am really struggling to get to the end. Reading this thread is not helping my resolve to get to the end either, keep thinking most of these other books sound more appealing!!

Claire236 · 20/04/2009 18:10

MatthewBellamysMuse - I loved them, although I was only about 15 when I read them. As I recall they take a while to get going but I found myself gradually getting drawn into the story.

Cosmosis · 21/04/2009 12:09

I am no longer reading the PBW. I got to chapter 4, and decided that life is too short to plough through books you're really not enjoying.

I've started The Abortionists Daughter instead.

Claire236 · 21/04/2009 17:20

I found The Abortionists Daughter a bit of a disappointment. I hope you enojoy it more than I did

whatever anyone does, do not waste your time (or money) on "Careless in Red" by Elizabeths George. Utter5 utter tosh. She is supposed to be an accomplished writer. I only bought it as it's set down here (Cornwall). Evan apart from the story being CRAP!! Her research is severly flawed. Although she has place names right, her knowledge of relevant things such as tides etc seems to be confused with flippin Cleethorpes of all places. She thinks nothing of people doing round trips taking them a few mins in the book - that would take hours in real life. She also has a very bad impression of Bude (can't see the locals being pleased with her descriptions ... she seems to see it as a slum full of yobs (the place is gorgeous). She also gives it a very odd name yet uses real street and place names and very identifiable businesses. There is no local dialect and she seems to think that the Met would be called into deal with local crimes. I could go on, but would have to think about the book more!!!

MrsGJB · 21/04/2009 17:42

apologies for typo's = the book wound me up so much

I am reading Michael Tolliver Lives by Armistead Maupin, having abandoned The Labyrinth after wading half way though..and MTL is sheer bliss compared with that tripe. Next is Notes from an Exhibition, which I read last summer and really liked..this is for book group, but I might find a snippet of something to read alongside it.

MrsGJB · 22/04/2009 01:05

Thanks Polly - much better now

Cosmosis · 22/04/2009 11:02

Clare236 I'm not expecting much other than for it to be more readable than PBW!

ZoeC · 22/04/2009 11:03

Just finished the book of Revolutionary Road, now reading The Suspicions of Mr Whicher.

Sunshinemummy · 22/04/2009 11:06

Am nearly at the end of the Red Riding Quartet by David Peace, which I'm reading to try and answer some of my unaswered questions from the TV films.

Next I'm not sure what to read - I have White Tiger so might start that.

janeite · 22/04/2009 19:17

Back at work now and in the manic-phase that is coursework moderation, so little time for reading. However, tonight I should finish a silly who-dunnit about a Mutilated Mink, which I have enjoyed hugely as a means of switching off.

Next - a book called 'The Heretic's Daughter' which a colleague has lent me and raved about.

YohoAhoy · 26/04/2009 14:20

Have just finished Time Traveller's Wife, which I was so looking forward to (despite mixed reviews), and it was.....ok.

Now have to decide between:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Inkspell
Book Thief
Bookseller of Kabul
new J.D Robb.

Can't work out what frame of mind I'm in!!

Just reviving this thread, esp for Provinciallady due to my next read.

I have just finished the Luminous life of Lilly Aphrodite which was ok but I didn't rave about it quite as much as most.

Just about to start first term at Mallory Towers . Book People must have read my post and put the box set in the latest catalogue.

MyEye · 29/04/2009 18:25

just finished Trauma by Patrick McGrath: creepy/odd/gripping, though the twist is a bit 'duh, and?'

Now tandem-reading The Birthday Present by Barbara Vine (slightly disapppointed so far) and a book for maybe 10/11/12 YOs called The Pickle King: rather sparky so far.

surreylady · 29/04/2009 19:19

In the middle of Shantaram - quite enjoying it but a 950 page novel is a bit of a marathon and has too many sub plots - wish it was shorter- also reading Where Angels Fear to Tread - EM Forster - as it is portable for the train - which I find pleasant and easy to read - as it is portable for the train

MrsGJB · 29/04/2009 19:40

"A History of Cornwall" - god I need some recommendations for reading material.
