Alwayes like reading these threads and am on MN far too much at mo whilst I am bfing so me -

Sashenka by Simon Montefiore. Was a mothers day pressie. It is ok but not wildly page turning hence why I am on MN and not cracking through it.

Next - the luminous life of Lilly Aphrodite, beatrice colin. For book club.

Also have Becoming Queen, Kate Williams, Sea of poppies, Amitav Ghosh and the new Phillipa Gregory on my imminently to be rad pile.

I loved the Wrong Boy. Really tickled me. And I'm not especially a Smiths fan, but it was definitely my era

yappybluedog · 17/04/2009 08:25

I think Nicci French is much better at the phsycological crime thriller than Sophie Hannah

cyteen · 17/04/2009 15:55

There's an article by Sophie Hannah in the latest edition of Mslexia which I also found very irritating and quite pointless.

MiaWallace · 17/04/2009 16:19

Currently reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ? Stieg Larsson. I?m enjoying it but can?t seem to read much of it in one go.

Bought four books yesterday so one of these will be my next read
Life sentences ? Laura Lippman
A simple act of violence ? R.J. Ellory
The Reader ? Bernhard Schlink
When will there be good news? ? Kate Atkinson

Just finished Saul Bellow "Humboldt's Gift" and currently reading "More Sex is Safer Sex" by Steven Landsburg which is a "Freakonomics" type book.

Last two were a Jodie Picoult (my guilty secret on aeroplanes!) and "A Far Cry from Kensington' by Muriel Spark.

Next I have "Sammler's Planet" by Saul Bellow and "Saplings" by Noel Streatfeild.

ahfeckit · 17/04/2009 20:22

Now: Sense and Sensibility

Next: probably another classic

Jenbot · 17/04/2009 20:30

Now: Candide
Next: Primary Colours

foxinsocks · 17/04/2009 20:32

I'm getting annoyed because I haven't got anything

have started 2 books in the hope that one would take my fancy

the newish Ian Rankin (can't remember name) and The Sea (the old booker prize one) and neither are taking my fancy grrr

Evenstar · 17/04/2009 20:41

I am just reading "The Kite Runner" which is good but very sad, and next it will be either "A Thousand Splendid Suns" or I might reread "I Capture the Castle" which I have just got back from my mum.

janeite · 17/04/2009 20:59

to 'Sense And Sensibility - but have read it about twenty times before so probably not ready for a re-read just yet!

Today I read 'The 39 Steps' on another train journey.

Next - still have 'Ursula Under' to read and am tempted by a book called (I think) 'The Good Thief' that's out - has anybody read it?

tigerdriver · 17/04/2009 23:12

oh the 39 steps - I love Buchan but you do have to forget PC when you read him,

My favourite Buchan is "Sick Heart River", it's about the wilds of Canada and is very odd but very good. Must read again.

At risk of harping on but why Sophie Hannah why? Just tosh, and objectionable - we read "Point of something" (think it was "Point of Rescue" but felt like point of no bloody return) for our BG, what really got me was that if the characters weren't silly middle class "ooh whoops I had a baby" types then they were "pink track suited childminders" or "avaricous babysitters" with unsuitable tracksuited boyfriends. Dont get me started. What rot.

TwoIfBySea · 17/04/2009 23:15

On now - The Night Watch

Next in line - The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Just finished - When Will There Be Good News?

Which I really enjoyed. So there you have it.

TwoIfBySea · 17/04/2009 23:26

Should say that The Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko and not the one by Sarah Waters!

tigerdriver · 17/04/2009 23:30

the sarah walters one is a fab novel, tho.

when will there be good news, I just wish Kate A was my best friend (gush) her books are so good.

foxinsocks · 18/04/2009 19:06

ok am going to try the Dragon Tattoo one as lots of people have recommended and I'm getting frustrated not being able to get more than one chapter into a book (hate that)

janeite · 18/04/2009 19:59

Last night and this morning I re-read 'The Deathly Hallows' - deffo the best one!

Next- mmmm am struggling. Any ideas?

ramsi · 18/04/2009 20:03

EdwardCullensWife · 19/04/2009 09:31

Currently reading Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice. Next will be The Vampire Lestat, the next book in the series.
I'm also halfway through The Reluctant Fundamentalist but it's not grabbing me.

AliceMumma · 19/04/2009 09:39

ooooh Mallory Towers, i used to love those books as a teen ager!!!

I have just discovered Juliet Marillier as an author my favourite!!!

And also Pillars of the Earth, and World without End is AWESOME! So addicted and would just read and read for hours on end. Set a few hundred years ago and really interesting. Ken Follet is the author.

=)

Claire236 · 19/04/2009 19:34

I keep meaning to re-read the Anne Rice vampire novels. My favourite is Queen of the Damned.

pollywobbledoodle · 20/04/2009 11:19

also tried anthony and cleopatra by colleen mccullough....pile of codswallop

to the poster who was reading factual books for a year....bill brysons mother tongue about the development of the english language and a sort history of almost everything are 2 of my favourite books plus jeremy paxman essays on the english
