Alwayes like reading these threads and am on MN far too much at mo whilst I am bfing so me -

Sashenka by Simon Montefiore. Was a mothers day pressie. It is ok but not wildly page turning hence why I am on MN and not cracking through it.

Next - the luminous life of Lilly Aphrodite, beatrice colin. For book club.

Also have Becoming Queen, Kate Williams, Sea of poppies, Amitav Ghosh and the new Phillipa Gregory on my imminently to be rad pile.

Hoping for inspiration from this thread. I'm all out of reading.

TheProvincialLady · 13/04/2009 19:37

Now: Fifth Form at Mallory Towers

(And Poor Caroline by Winifred Holtby but can't really get into it)

Next: The Bolter, a biography about Somebody Sackville. I was bought it as a Christmas present.

TBH I haven't read much recently due to lack of brain power as I have a 3 month old and a toddler.

purepurple · 13/04/2009 19:38

I have nearly finished Firestarter by Stephen King and I have no idea what I shall be reading next

Wheelybug · 13/04/2009 19:40

provincial - I too have The Bolter to-be-read. My mum bought it for me when i was in hospital having had dd2 a few weeks ago.

Now "Full Tilt" Dervla Murphy.
Tis v good, but written in 60's so v v different view on Afghanistan and Pakistan to now.

Next "Randon Acts of heroic Love" I htink it is.
Started it lat week but kept crying

Oooh, Riven, haven't read that one of hers. Is it good?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 13/04/2009 19:42

A Fraction of the WHole, but interspersing it with others.

Shandyleer · 13/04/2009 19:43

I've just finished reading Never Far From Nowhere by Andrea Levy, which was brilliant. Can't decide whether to read Restoration by Rose Tremain or Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs next. I was tidying the bookshelves earlier and caught sight of Roots, which I would love to read again as well, but will have to put some serious time aside for that one!

infin · 13/04/2009 19:43

Now...Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard, Kiran Desai...hilarious.
Next..Any Human Heart...William Boyd.
Will be interested to see what you think of Sea Of Poppies, I loved Ghosh's other books but despite an overpowering love affair with all things Indian, found Poppies a bit hard going.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 13/04/2009 19:43

One of which is Random Acts of Love

Shandyleer · 13/04/2009 19:44

Provincial Lady - I meant to ask you in my last post, are you the Provincial Lady because you read and enjoyed the book?!

Rumpel · 13/04/2009 19:44

Bad Heir Day (don't ask me who )- think it came free with a mag and it seems to be non brain taxing so fine for me at the mo'

moondog · 13/04/2009 19:44

I don't read much fiction and I'm on holiday [hooray!] but these comprise my present stash.
Mister Pip- Lloyd Jones [enjoyed it though deeply disturbing. Set in PNG where I grew up so an additional dimension for me]

Adventures on the High Teas- Stuart Maconie. Pleasant travelogue about Middle England

Teaching Needy kids in our backward system- Zig Engelmann [written about the most talented person in the world with regards to 'failing' kids, one who is ignored and pilloried by establishment despite indisputable evidence that his methods are head and shoulders above everyone elses.]

Escape- autobiography of Carolyn Jessop who fled fro weird marriage to polygamist Mormons. Nuts. Bloody nuts.

The Big Necessity- Rose George [a recent book about the disposal-or lack of-human shit around the world. Fascinating.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 13/04/2009 19:44

Any Human Heart is a great book, was very disappointed when I came to the end as I just wanted it to go on.

TheProvincialLady · 13/04/2009 19:46

Shandyleer yes I am (and I identify with the woman in too many ways). It's one of my favourites. I really enjoy EM Delafield in general and also that period of women's fiction generally, hence the Winifred Holtby.

Wheelybug · 13/04/2009 19:48

infin - I've loved Ghosh's other books too so have been lookinhg forward to this coming out in PB. Shame its hard going though - might be a bit much for my postnatal brain ...

moondog I really enjoyed mister pip i a strange way as it was deeply disturbing

OP posts:
Heated · 13/04/2009 19:48

The entire Amelia Peabody series as I love Egypt.

kidcreoleandthehotcrossbuns · 13/04/2009 19:50

Now...Second Glance by Jodi Picoult.

Next...Haven't a clue. I have so many books that are waiting to be read on my bookcase. I got out of the reading groove for a while.
To choose from I have....
Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann
Captain Corelli's Mandolin
Cold Mountain by charles Frazier
The 2 1/2 Pillars of Wisdom by Alexander McCall Smith.

Which should I read first anyone?
Sorry for thread hijack.

Wheelybug · 13/04/2009 19:50

provlady - i also meant to say I really want to reread mallory towers and st clares (and Anne of Green Gables). Keep hoping the sets will come up cheap in the book people catalogue so i can buy them for dd1 (who's only 4 but it'd be agood excuse !)

infin · 13/04/2009 19:51

Wheelybug...it may just be me..it gets great reviews on Amazon. It was part of a birthday present from DP last year on the day it was published. He was so pleased with himself I had to pretend I loved it. I see the sequels coming my way...

Wheelybug · 13/04/2009 19:52

kid - not captain corelli, found it very dull !

OP posts:
kidcreoleandthehotcrossbuns · 13/04/2009 19:56

Ok Wheelybug. I'll have a go at one of the others first

brimfull · 13/04/2009 20:01

I am reading The 19th Wife atm ,so far it is great.

Haven't got one to follow.

TheProvincialLady · 13/04/2009 20:04

Moondog I like the sound of that Escape autobiography,

Wheely it is surpringly enjoyable. I borrowed the first 3 from DH's classroom library a couple of weeks ago and after I finished it I sent him to the main school library to find the rest for me

muggglewump · 13/04/2009 20:06

Currently reading Brick Lane by Monica Ali. I'm just on Chapter 4 but I'm enjoying it.
Next is Vroom by the sea, by Peter Moore, my favourite even travel writer. Far funnier than Bill Bryson, I adore his books.
