it's not my thing, reading the blurb, but am willing to be convinced...but it's so huge... secretly I'm desperate to read a book of short stories just ordered from Amazon but if I do I'll never finish this in time

No you will hate it. We did it for our book group too. It is unutterable, unmitigated, derivative tripe.

steamedtreaclesponge · 04/03/2009 12:22

I hated it... I just found it really turgid! Completely predictable, irritating characters, and soooo dull. Richard and Judy have a lot to answer for methinks.

Galava · 04/03/2009 12:28

its only slightly interesting if you have visited the area.

Skip every few pages .... you'll still know whats what !

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/03/2009 12:29

oh thank goodness, that kind of makes me feel better

actually- I have been (as a teenager) Carcassone etc and our car broke down in Narbonne - I wonder if that might help ?

I hated it! The writing style is awful and irritating.

madwomanintheattic · 04/03/2009 12:32

i gave it to my mum.
because i couldn't be bothered to finish it.

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/03/2009 13:02

Oh it is awful. I didn't bother to finish it as it was absolute nonsense. The writing (pah!) is similar to that Da Vinci Code tripe.

MuppetsMuggle · 04/03/2009 13:04

I loved this book, I really got into it.

thumbwitch · 04/03/2009 13:05

s'crap. I lost all patience with it when the "heroine" did something so mind-bogglingly stupid as to put everyone's lives at risk, all for a plot twist. Gah. Stupid book. Wouldn't ever read anything by Kate Mosse again.

MadreInglese · 04/03/2009 13:05

Ewwww no no no no no.....

Kate Mosse takes about 12 pages to say what could be said in about 2 paragraphs.

Agree though if you know the area it may be mildly interesting.

FlossieT · 04/03/2009 13:05

The thing that sticks in my head is from the Grauniad review, which called it "chick lit with A-levels".

I didn't find it quite as unbearable as everyone else here - better than Dan Brown at least - but I didn't see any need to keep my copy once I'd finished it.

thumbwitch · 04/03/2009 13:07

ooh, no, I much prefer Dan Brown, FlossieT.

Cies · 04/03/2009 13:09

I read it on holiday. That's all I remember about it. It passed the time, but I'm pretty sure it was tedious and predictable.

Rhubarb · 04/03/2009 13:09

If you liked Dan Brown then you'll like it. It's certainly more intelligent than his plots, but the story is basically the same and is just as unbelievable.

Depends what you're into.

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/03/2009 13:11

so, shall I ditch it ? I feel obliged to try a bit but =can't face the enormity of it all. There are loads of books we really want to red but our library can only get the ones from the book groups list in any quantity - it gets expensive buying new every time.Am glad I didn't have to fork out for this huge thing though.

OP posts:
chocoholic · 04/03/2009 13:14

Yes, ditch it. I'm still really annoyed that I read it. Hated every page but I don't like not finishing books so had to plough on.

Hate it, hate it, hate it!!!

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/03/2009 13:15

thanks ! I feel justified because mumsnet has decreed it's ok for me not to read it

mummyontherun · 04/03/2009 13:16

Agree with these comments - and the violent bits are horrid! Graphic and revolting...

girlandboy · 04/03/2009 13:17

I remember quite enjoying this book, but strangely enough if someone had asked me what it was about and especially how it ended then I couldn't have told them.

Your library should be able to help better. I work in a library, and we can always get together enough copies of books. We put a requisition onto every library in the county for said book, and in they come! Especially with the new best sellers, because each library ends up with several copies of those. Ask your library manager.

MuppetsMuggle · 04/03/2009 13:17

I love Dan Brown too, Kates next book is good too.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 04/03/2009 13:18

Find a plot summary on the web and pretend you read it.
Disclaimer: I am not implying that I have ever done this.

girlandboy · 04/03/2009 13:19

Oh, and don't bother with Kate Mosse's other book. I couldn't even get over a third of the way through that one.

Sepulchre

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/03/2009 13:21

girlandboy - we have asked and presented our own lists with really good titles but they can't do it for us..
I have no desire to read any Dan Brown -it really isn't my thing at all !
Paulo Coehlo just about finished me off - total shite

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/03/2009 13:22

LGP - I have used other reviews to remind me of things I've read !! some books so unmemorable.
