it's not my thing, reading the blurb, but am willing to be convinced...but it's so huge... secretly I'm desperate to read a book of short stories just ordered from Amazon but if I do I'll never finish this in time

You should read Five People You Meet in Heaven sometime MAS. You'll love it.

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/03/2009 13:24

I disagree that "if you like Dan Brown you'll like this", because I did like Dan Brown's books (male equivalent of chicklit, what would that be, dicklit?) but couldn't stand Kate Mosse.

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/03/2009 13:41

ROFL at dicklit! That would cover John Grisham, Jeffery Archer, Tony Parsons and loads others.

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/03/2009 13:42

dicklit is brilliant

It is dreadful, as is the other one. Bin it!

Lilymaid · 04/03/2009 19:35

Yes, it is truly dreadful and about 600 pages longer than necessary. I understand that Sepulchre is even worse, if that is possible. Life is too short to waste reading rubbish like that. (Yes I read it for a book group which was split 70:30 about it, majority hating it).

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/03/2009 09:59

argh, one of my group has nearly finished it and likes it - I always feel that they think I am extremely hard to please !
I am v happy that the next book is Nots from an Exhibition which I really liked a lot but they are all sceptical as I suggested a Patrick Gale before and no one really liked it

um, MAS, perhaps you might want to consider finding a different book group, with more congenial tastes?

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/03/2009 10:46

trouble is they are fantastic group, really lovely people and we have a hoot, but occasssionally I have to wade through tiresome books- suppose that's all part of it really !

I didnt mind it, I think I did skim some bits, but I wouldnt read it again. I didnt put it down with that "what a great book" glow but then again it certainly wasnt the best book ive ever read by a long shot.

I think books are like music and totally a matter of personal taste.

If you have the book already or can get it second hand they try a few chapters, but I really wouldnt pay full price for it

WilyWombat · 05/03/2009 10:53

What I meant to say was it certainly wasnt the worst book I have read by a long shot.

funnypeculiar · 05/03/2009 10:58

Ditch it and reread Notes instead.
I waded through Labyrinth having been assured it 'got better', and subliminally thinking it had to have some Pan's Labyrinth tyhpe twisted-ness at some point. Nope.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/03/2009 11:10

we have library copies so thankfully didn't have to buy it !
I will have a go at it to show willing but I think I may have to abandon it

OP posts:
WilyWombat · 05/03/2009 12:08

Well if you read a few chapters and hate it, then you have your review dont you plus you would also be bolstered by the knowledge that you arent alone in not enjoying it.

I cant even see the book in the shop now without thinking "thats the one they hate on mumsnet" LOL

I didnt think it was that bad personally but wouldnt choose it if I had something better to read! I do go a bit crazy though if I have nothing to read and end up reading the cereal packets in desperation

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/03/2009 14:21

it's been a comfort to know that I'm not just being picky !
