I think I may be slightly in love

Couldn't put it down, off to waterstones tomorrow to get the next ones, tell me i'm no the only one

Haven't read a book in ages that has kept me that interested, even DH said that must be good, I was still reading whilst stirring the soup

Isn't it strange how different people can read the same books and get such different views on them?

I think that Twilight is slightly Potteresque...perfectly readable, but not nearly as inspiring or life changing as many people profess.

Perhaps I'm too old to appreciate it?!?

I find that if you read enough of the series, you eventually get into the characters and develop a mild curiosity in terms of what might come next, but you're rarely challenged or surprised by it.

Janeite, if you're vaguely interested in what happens to Bella or Edwards by the end of Breaking Dawn, I'll happily post a spoilers thread or if you cat me, I can email a summary of what happens...save you bothering with the books themselves.

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 02/11/2008 17:15

oh no, just read custardo's post and I think have guessed what's going to happen

am a third through the last one

NO MORE SPOILERS PLEASE!

janeite · 02/11/2008 18:20

Lol Squilly. Yes, I said earlier down the thread that it reminded me of Harry Potter, and not in a good way!

I am ordering the third one for dd for Christmas; she said the first two were okay and that she'd like to carry on reading them so I'll hold out on the spoilers for now, in case I'm tempted to let them slip to her, thanks!

littlelamb · 02/11/2008 21:01

O Custardo I am so with you! I wanted to throw Breaking Dawn across the room. I read most of it while bfing ds to sleep, and he really likes to try to grasp the pages. Normally I stop him, but with this book I thought, nah, you go for it boy Team Jacob all the way

VintageGardenia · 03/11/2008 12:30

I bought Twilight, having seen this thread, am nearly finished it, but I have to say am not stunned! Apart from some of the Cullens and Bella the characters aren't well drawn or even interesting, and I find Bella quite irritating. Why does she trip up all the time? Her backstory & how she finds herself in Forks is set up as a big mystery and turns out to be quite ordinary. I find the "intense" conversations between Edward and Bella a bit dull and off the point... though I do agree he sounds very sexy, physically. And I find the writing quite uneven and full of mistakes. Aaargh this is not to say I won't be getting the rest, though!!

VintageGardenia · 03/11/2008 12:35

Just to put my pedant's hat on, it's stuff like "something in my face made him realise blah blah blah" - i.e. getting the point of view totally confused - and "he... unloosened my stranglehold on his neck" - when that is clearly not what he was doing. The writing just gets in the way all the time.

OK I'll lighten up now .

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 03/11/2008 12:50

remember it is not intended for adult readers

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 03/11/2008 12:51

I am half-way through Breaking Dawn, it is quite gory in places

and i did guess the plot twist, goddamit

Tortington · 03/11/2008 12:54

and are you going to watch the fairly imminent film?

alleve · 03/11/2008 12:55

My DD 14 is reading the series. It's taken her a week to get to the 4th book. She is in love with Edward too.

MamaG · 03/11/2008 12:57

Oh I always like a new book

What is the title and author, I'l order one now

alleve · 03/11/2008 13:00

The author is Stephenie Meyer, the first is 'twilight' and a film is due out. 4 books in the series. They are aimed at teens.

VintageGardenia · 03/11/2008 13:01

FIrst one is Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.

VintageGardenia · 03/11/2008 13:01

I don't think being aimed at teens is an excuse for shoddy writing though.

littlelamb · 03/11/2008 13:11

SPOILER

And just to be really pedantic, did anyone else notice how in Breaking Dawn they never strap that child in?? I know being immortal and eveything, it's probably not necessary, but it was always 'and she was sat on my lap while we were in a porsche speeding at 100 mph'

sleepyeyes · 03/11/2008 13:59

The film is out in the UK on the 19th of December, I know what I will be doing over the xmas holidays.

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 03/11/2008 14:18

i don't think the writing is shoddy, just not very sophisticated to an adult reader

can't WAIT for the film

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 03/11/2008 14:19

i think she writes much better than say, Jodi Picoult

sleepyeyes · 03/11/2008 18:45

Just about to start the second one tonight, looking forward to more Jacobe.

janeite · 03/11/2008 19:07

Agreed Lurker: but Jodie Picoult doesn't seem to actually "write" anyway: she has one of those machines from "1984" that you just twist around to get a different setting and a couple of different character names, with a slightly different "issue" each time but the same plot!

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 03/11/2008 19:22

yes, tis true, read one you've read them all

did like 19 minutes though

Thefairiesmademedoit · 10/11/2008 13:02

Right, okay I am a fairly sensible 35 year old (honest), but, OMG I love these books.

I ordered the first 2 Twilight books based on reviews on here, thinking that they would be something I might like. I didn't have a chance to even look at them until DS2 woke up briefly one night after everyone had gone to bed. After giving him a cuddle, I was waiting 10 mins to see if he would drop of, so picked up the first book for "10 mins"....

In fact stayed up until 5AM and finished it. DH husband pointed out that when you get out of bed in the middle of the night you're supposed to get back into bed.

DH husband has been informed that he is coming with me to the film.

Sad aren't I, lol.

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 10/11/2008 17:21

I have finished the last one, feel quite bereft now

the Volturi are quite tiresome though

LyraSilver · 11/11/2008 12:41

Haven't read the whole thread so this may be a repeat but you can read the 'new' book written from Edwards point of view on her website.. stephaniemeyer.com.
Cant wait to see the film, although, as usual the characters all look so different to the way I had imagined them.

LyraSilver · 11/11/2008 12:46

Although I read all the books, it was more just to see if anything really interesting happened.. the plot and writing did leave alot to be desired. The books are really not in the same league as His Dark Materials by Pullman or the Potter books. I do think that the first book will make a good film, not too complicated, lots of action and attractive characters.
