Mine are:

Kenneth Branagh as Gilderoy Lockhart
Winona Ryder as Jo from Little Women ( she did a nice job but I wouldn't have cast her!)

Keira Knightly and Clive Owen as King Arthur and Guinevere, should have been Sean Bean and someone, anyone but Keira.

bran · 26/08/2008 08:51

Most of the leading characters in the film version of Pride and Prejudice were wrong, and the script was an annoying adaptation too.

Both actors who played Anakin Skywalker, Ewan McGregor was wrong for Obi Wan too.

I was surprised that Gwyneth Paltrow was really quite good in the film version of Emma, I was expecting her to be all wrong for the part.

castlesintheair · 26/08/2008 08:55

Keira Knightly as Elizabeth Bennett

Nicolas Cage as Captain Correlli and Penelope Cruz and her thick spanish accent as Pelagia

AnnVan · 26/08/2008 08:57

Reese Witherspoon in the Importance of Being Earnest. It just didn't work.
Imelda Staunton - I agree she should never have been Umbridge. I was also surprisingly dissapointed in Alan Rickman as Snape. I think he's a god, and thought he would be perfect when they cast him, but it nver really quite came off. Mind you we haven't seen the best of snape yet! I thought Branagh was perfect as Lockhart.

The Dark is Rising - cutesy AMERICAN as will. Mind you the whole film was suddenly American and the whole essence of the story was destroyed. Where on earth did they get the idea that the signs give Will special powers??? TOtal ruination of a book I adored in my early teens

BlueberryBeret · 26/08/2008 09:02

Ooh I agree with so many of these - Armand, I saw the film years before I read the book, then read the book and sat thinking "I thought that was Banderas... must've been wrong"

Tobey Maguire I just want to shake, but I think that is a general impulse.

Daniel Craig as Asriel wasn't who I had pictured, but I felt he worked.

Sirius - wrong wrong wrong wrong

I know it isn't out yet, but half the casting for Twilight is wrong - Cedric Diggory as Edward??? Jasper and Emmett are wrong too - emmett is far too small.

LackaDAISYcal · 26/08/2008 09:55

how about Mel Gibson as William Wallace, who by all accounts was well over 6 foot

LackaDAISYcal · 26/08/2008 09:56

ok, not strictly a book but still....

janeite · 26/08/2008 09:57

Bran - sorry but I totally disagree re: Gwynnie - she was appalling as Emma; then again, the entire film was appalling!

themildmanneredstalker · 26/08/2008 09:57

michael gambon as dumbledore. he is so utterly wrong it makles me want to cry. he plays him wrong too-he is way too aggressive and has changed the haracter with his interpretation

TartanKnickers · 26/08/2008 09:58

James Nesbitt as Jack Parlabne in Quite Ugly One Morning. Just totally wrong!

themildmanneredstalker · 26/08/2008 09:58

and sirius should have been christopher ecclestone. gary oldman too old and just wrong wrong wrong

Bronze · 26/08/2008 09:58

Finally someone agrees with me I could never ger past Liv Tyler as Arwen. So much so in fact I haven't watched the films.

CantSleepWontSleep · 26/08/2008 10:04

Wesley Snipes as Lincoln Rhyme in The Bone Collector. But then the whole film bore little resemblance to the book.

cyteen · 26/08/2008 10:19

Natalie Portman as Evie in V For Vendetta. She is shamefully shite in pretty much everything anyway, but her total personality void was particularly misplaced here.

saltire · 26/08/2008 10:22

Clive OWen should be Sirius. In my mind, when reading the books, thats how I pictured him, as some tall sexy man, not Gary Oldman, who is a terrific actor, just wrong in that part.
William Wallace should have been played by a Scottish (or at least British) actor, not some Australian

BlueberryBeret · 26/08/2008 10:24

Hmmm, I think I can see Clive Owen... I dunno, i have never decided who I like for the part, no-one fits who I have in my head.

Oh, and as much as I love Johnny Depp, I agree that he is wrong for Wonka

fluffyanimal · 26/08/2008 10:27

I think it was Denzel Washington in the Bone Collector, wasn't it?

themildmanneredstalker · 26/08/2008 10:31

very sirius

and this!

saltire · 26/08/2008 10:45

this is better

suey2 · 26/08/2008 10:46

TOTALLY tartanknickers- i really hate james nesbit- and i loved the jack parlabane / christopher brookmyre books- they really needed to cast a tough but attractive glaswegian for that role IMO. No surprise they haven't adapted any more

suey2 · 26/08/2008 10:47

LOL saltire! phoar

HonoriaGlossop · 26/08/2008 10:50

Bronze, you should watch the films before you judge! I HATED the thought of Liv Tyler as Arwen and thought it was bizarre but actually she's brilliant IMO. Really good. Watch then judge!

themildmanneredstalker · 26/08/2008 10:50

no-too smooth looking

chipmonkey · 26/08/2008 11:25

Matthew McFadyen as Mr Darcy in the Pride and Prejudice Movie. After the TV series, Mr Darcy can only be Colin Firth!

chipmonkey · 26/08/2008 11:28

Hogo Weaving as Elrond. I had always imagined Elrond to look something like Lucius Malfoy in the HP movies.
