Mine are:

Kenneth Branagh as Gilderoy Lockhart
Winona Ryder as Jo from Little Women ( she did a nice job but I wouldn't have cast her!)

can I say that Amanda Root was a pretty good Anne Elliot in Persuasion, and Ciaran Hinds a fine Captain Wentworth imo

MaryAnn, I totally agree. In fact Root/Hinds were absolutely sublime casting; can't see them ever being bettered. I loved that adaptation!

Have to say though I hated him as Mr Rochester. Thought he made a right mess of it. Apparently he had never read the book. Which showed.

"All she does in LOTR is swan around looking gormless."

That's all anyone does in LOTR. My god, a more humourless trilogy never was made. Between the entire cast of thousands I struggled to identify a single emotion that wasn't either woodenly fumbled or flagged in giant 50 foot semaphore.

janeite · 26/08/2008 17:40

I LOVE KK in P&P but think I am in a minority.

squeaver · 26/08/2008 17:44

John Hannah as Rebus - he gets on my tits. And especially when Ken Stott was so good later on.

squeaver · 26/08/2008 17:45

Oh and Keira Knightley in anything at all - but especially P&P.

MaryAnnSingleton · 26/08/2008 17:47

I loved Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennett in P&P

themildmanneredstalker · 26/08/2008 17:51

i don't think michael gambon can have read the books at all. he is playing it so badly-so WRONG!

squeaver · 26/08/2008 17:52

yes she was the best MAS.

BlingLovin · 26/08/2008 17:56

Totally agree on Renee Z. Complete waste of space. And her voice, whether in american or english accent, is just annoying.

But have to disagree on Snape. He was never hot. He was ugly, with greasy hair and kind of slimey. That's what's so great about him - he's the character we're always supposed to hate, but he's actually got more depth than the his slime-oozing would lead you to expect? I think the casting on that is brilliant.

scottishmummy · 26/08/2008 17:57

yes John hannah was bad rebus.anything with kiera knightley she is such a ham, total gammon

themildmanneredstalker · 26/08/2008 17:58

i agree that alan rickman is fab as snape. really good.

themildmanneredstalker · 26/08/2008 17:58

but nobody has suggested he was wrong?

BlingLovin · 26/08/2008 18:00

Alan Rickman? Someone further up definitely said he wasn't sexy enough. I was shocked.

themildmanneredstalker · 26/08/2008 18:03

no-i think the discussion was that gary oldman wasn't sexy enough to be sirius

reban · 26/08/2008 18:06

Total agree about leonardo di caprio and The Beach ... he was so wrong .. up there with kevin Costner as Robin Hood.
Dont know if Toby (cant remember his surname) was wrong as spiderman but i just cant stand the man, i just want to give him a really good shake
The worse i have seen recently is when Sky adapted Terry Pratchetts The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic. I am a really big Pratchett fan, have all the books and loved the adaptation of Hogfather a couple of christmas's ago when David Jason played and Alfred, death's funny servant. He was perfect. So why they cast him again in a completely defferent role that was made for David Tennant i have no idea .. im talking fairly young, wirery (sp) cheeky, slightly cowardly wizard. Not short, round old wizard who seemed to spend most of his time out of breath. I was bittely disappointed.
Appreciate that this has probably gone over most people's head as Terry Pratchett is a bit of a nerdy boy thing but i love it

BlingLovin · 26/08/2008 18:11

oh dear. I think you're right. Totally agree on the Gary Oldman one.

frankiesbestfriend · 26/08/2008 18:13

Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in Brett Easton Ellis' American Psycho.

When I read the book I had Billy Zane in my head, Christian Bale to young and boyish imo.

cyteen · 26/08/2008 18:14

Although Bale does have the advantage of being able to act.

frankiesbestfriend · 26/08/2008 18:20

Thought Zanes' wooden style would suit the Bateman character perfectly though, the way he is completely detatched emotionally iyswim.

Bronze · 26/08/2008 18:34

Honoria

I did start watchign them and got a fair way in before I had to stop. Some of the other casting annoyed me too and it was all too much.

LazyLinePainterJane · 26/08/2008 18:58

Yuck I hate whey faced Tobey Maguire but thought he was fine as Spider-Man, he seemed quite apt as Peter Parker.

A lot of Harry Potter was off I thought, but it's hard when picking obviously famous people to pick such well known roles. Radcliffe gets better, but was awful at the start but as the kids were going to grow and change so much as they got older, I imagine that the only requirement for Harry at the start was that he was not too tall and had dark hair and looked alright in glasses.

Hermione is a joke, talk about rippling curls and pretty, nothing like the book. She is very disliked in the books, has no mates, the version of her in the film seems like she could win a popularity competition. As for Trelawny, UMbridge, Dumblychops, Lupin, Tonks, Sirius, they all seemed slightly off. I thought McGonagall and Mad-Eye and Snape were pretty good, Snape not perfect but I think it would have been impossible to get him right tbh.

BlueberryBeret · 26/08/2008 19:21

Hermione has always been sooooooo wrong - why have they never even attempted to give her fuzzy hair???

Ron I love But then DH does have a striking similarity to him (not ginger, but at the time of the last film the hair was the same length and there was a sudden of realisation that I was sleeping with a 16yr old boy! )

GloriaStits · 26/08/2008 20:43

Haven't read the whole thread- wondering if anyone has said the entire cast of bonfire of the vanities. Can't decide who is the most hopelessly miscast- tom hanks, bruce willis or melanie griffiths. dreadful
