Has anyone started this yet? The first book was just released today.

I'm only a couple of chapters in, and I really want to love it, but I'm not blown away so far. The narrator is good; I do like her voice - it's a nice and soothing voice. I really like the cast voices, but their voices are too quiet and sometimes quite tinny sounding. The sound effects can be really distracting, and too loud - it's quite hard to hear the cast voices over them. I'm hoping it improves!

Just got to that it in book 2 and Ron hit Harry a book on Chudleigh cannons and Hermione got him a nice quill. My brain’s like ‘where have you got those from? None of you have left the school grounds for 4 months.’ 😂

MrsMitford3 · 13/02/2026 18:23

Maybe Owl post? Sirius sent Crookshanks to buy Harry’s Firebolt

RafaistheKingofClay · 13/02/2026 18:25

Has to be. Poor Errol. He must dread Xmas with all the Weasley kids buying gifts. Hopefully he gets January off.

I'm late to the thread but very much enjoying the full cast audiobooks. I signed up for Audible especially and will probably cancel after the last one comes out.

Agree with you all about Cush Jumbo; lovely voice and pleasant to listen to. (Plus I was already a fan as I liked her in the Good Wife & the Good Fight.)

Not many mentions of Matthew McFayden's Voldemort. I'm not too impressed tbh. Particularly at the very start of GoF, as he talks a lot. He's just not evil or scary enough.

I think it's ridiculous that they cast a trans woman with a very obviously male voice as a female character - and Madam Pomfrey too, who I think of as being rather maternal and matronly. I suppose they felt obliged to cast a trans woman as some kind of concession to the TRA mob and all the woke people who have just accepted their nonsense. Well given how brilliantly JKR has stood up for herself I think it's a shame they capitulated in this way.

ASongbirdAndAnOldHat · 13/02/2026 21:27

wizarding equivalent of the Argos catalogue 😂

Dumbledoor attended Tom Riddles orphanage so that makes sense that muggle children had the same treatment.

I agree about Madame Pomfrey - especially the role, I don't understand why JKR allowed it.

Just got to the bit where Professor Trelawney has been introduced. I honestly don't think I can listen to her, the weird hybrid accent and going between high and breathy to deep and booming is so confusing, pick a lane! It's a good job I've read the books a million times because I'm going to have to skip part any bit where she speaks 😳

I don't mind professor Trewlaney. I see her as a fraud, so I believe the voice is put on and exaggerated. She is annoying because she is meant to be (well that's what I think)

I am coming round to Snape, and probably he is more like the snivelling character described in the books.

JudgingJudy · 18/02/2026 10:15

I simply loved the Trelawny actor. My favourite nearly , so far.

HollyGolightly4 · 18/02/2026 10:30

Trelawney is the woman who played Erin in Derry Girls- her name escapes me right now. I think she's better if you can see her face!

JudgingJudy · 19/02/2026 02:03

I thought I knew her voice but couldn't put a face to it. I'm a massive fan of Derry Girls too. It's that similar OTT character!

Civilservant · 19/02/2026 10:18

Hadn’t realised it’s that actor! I like how she’s done Trelawny: a (deliberately) annoying character!

Randomchat · 19/02/2026 16:17

I'm not enjoying the new Harry in the Goblet of Fire. He sounds like a fully grown man. I know many boys do sound like men at 14 but he's just a bit too old. And too similar sounding to Ron. I can't tell who's speaking.
But I'm sure I'll get used to them. I'm really enjoying all these books.

Lupin's voice was so lovely. I loved listening to him. He was so calm and comforting. If I lived in the madness of Harry's life at Hogwarts I'd have liked Lupin to talk calmly to me.

How's anyone getting on with book 3?

The third book was my favourite book, it explores the dynamics of friendship and loyalty
I am enjoying the audible's full cast editions however casting a man as Madam Pomfrey is really jarring
Stephen Fry did a better version of a woman!s voice for Madam Pomfrey than this fella does.

AlphabetBird · 19/02/2026 20:56

Just finished Goblet of Fire. I really loved the new teenage voices - they sounds just like my teenager and his friends! Hermione is excellent in particular.

I am concerned about how long these things are getting - will I be able to finish them before the next one is out?

It is a particularly odd character to have voiced by a biological man.

scoobydeedoo · 22/02/2026 22:46

Looks like I'm in the minority with Professor Trelawney 😂 I'm also getting really irritated with Malfoy, maybe I'm biased as I liked Tom Felton but this Malfoy is too sneering Eaton schoolboy. Which I suppose fits with the character but I just don't like it!

Excited to start book 4 and hear the new cast, still got over 8 hours of POA to get through first though.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 24/02/2026 11:01

Something else that’s hit me, when Harry mentions Krum is 18 - that’s a bit creepy, isn’t it, him dating the 14 yo Hermione? Especially quite seriously, telling her he’s never felt this way about any other girl, wanting her to come and visit him over the summer…

My DD is 14 and that would be a big, fat NO from me!

I thought Malfoy was the stand out child actor in 1-3.

A sneery Eton schoolboy is exactly what his character is depicted as.
Much more of a bully than in the films-I thought he was great!

It is hard when the voices are very different than the film voices-I had to adjust to Moody but now like him.
Book 4 Hermione sounds so so much like Emma Watson that it does make it easy to know it is her.

I just thought it was too much like a caricature, like Trelawney.

I haven't heard Moody yet, but I do like James McAvoy. I'm interested to hear what the new trio sound like!

LetMeJustCheckMyCitrusPocket · 24/02/2026 19:00

Moody seems to become progressively more Scottish as GoF goes on! I'm not complaining, I think it suits the character well.

MrsMitford3 · 24/02/2026 19:15

haha I completely agree @LetMeJustCheckMyCitrusPocket

but I have now accepted his Scottish voice. What sort of accent did he have in the films? I can't remember

LetMeJustCheckMyCitrusPocket · 24/02/2026 19:30

@MrsMitford3 I think it was an Irish accent in the films, he was played by Brendan Gleeson.
Also very nice but I'm particularly enjoying James McAvoy's version and have enjoyed this full cast GoF.

HollyGolightly4 · 24/02/2026 21:43

I love James McAvoy- in general! His performance is definitely a bit campier than Brendan Gleeson, but I think he's cast well.
