NEW Dickens readalong Dombey and Son - the 2025 Dombeyalong!

Join me in the next Dickens readalong, Dombeyalongadingdong! This is probably the last big Dickens we haven't done.
The novel was originally published by Dickens in 19 instalments, all exactly 32 pages long (I do find this obsession with 32 pages intriguing- writing to such an exact brief must have involved quite a lot of editing and , as I recall from Nickleby, much padding at times!) and then published in full in 1848. I know nothing of this one really - except the name Paul Dombey sticks in my head. Apparently , this one is more focused on marriage and is read as marking a change in Dickens' presentation of women. Seafaring is involved but this is also his first book about the arrival of railways which Dickens was not altogether sold on. This period was referred to as 'railway mania'. It's really quite hard to conceptualise the rapid progress and change surrounding Dickens.

This one has not been on TV for a long time. Andrew Davies had been working on a version - but it was ditched because it was felt we had had too many 'bonnet dramas'. I swear we have still had many since but rather heavily 'adapted' and maybe Sarah Phelps hasn't read Dombey...

I propose condensing this to an eight month read, using Dickens' shorter sections as a guide . We begin in May, as follows:
May - Chapters 1 - 7
June- Chapters 8-13
July- Chapters 14-22
August - Chapters 23-31
September - Chapters 32-38
October - Chapters 39-45
November - Chapters 46-51
and finishing for Christmas in
December - Chapters 52 - end

Considerably more chapters in this one, so I am guessing some must be quite short.

I'll link Katie's intro in my next post.

Anyone and everyone welcome!

Thank you Piggy! Place-marking with a sherry cobbler or two! 🥂

Jzp · 17/04/2025 08:48

What a brilliant idea!! I’d love to join

InTheCludgie · 17/04/2025 08:57

Hi @Piggywaspushed I'm up for this readalong, thanks for setting it up. I'm also going to pick up either Little Dorrit or David Copperfield to finish this year too. I'm determined to complete the previous readalongs which I've failed on!

InTheCludgie · 17/04/2025 09:03

Argh I've also got OMF to complete at some point too! Less keen to pick this one up tbh. I know it's Katie's favourite but I remember feeling it was a bit of a slog.

Piggywaspushed · 17/04/2025 09:57

Welcome jzp!

I remember v little about OMF must say...

LadybirdDaphne · 17/04/2025 11:24

I’m in!

My strongest recollection about OMF is Twemlow - was he a man or was he a table…?

Piggywaspushed · 17/04/2025 15:23

Possibly both!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 17/04/2025 15:31

I joined you after OMF. It's on my list of unread Dickenses.

CutFlowers · 17/04/2025 18:51

I'd love to join please. Am enjoying my first ever read-a-long with The Count of Monte Cristo. We end in May - so this would be great time to start another long book.

I've only ever read one Dickens novel - does it matter what edition you read?

Piggywaspushed · 17/04/2025 18:55

Not that I know of- I just get the Wordsworth because it's the cheapest!

Hi CutFlowers! I usually get Penguin. I don't see any illustrations or introduction on the one I bought on Kindle earlier, sad to say. I should have spent more time browsing!

CutFlowers · 17/04/2025 19:33

That's great thanks - looking forward to it!

cassandre · 17/04/2025 21:33

Thanks Piggy, looking forward to it!

I just wish I had joined these Dickens read-along threads a few years earlier; I've missed out!

This will be my third after NN and MC 😍

MrsKeats · 17/04/2025 21:44

Lovely thanks!

NormaMajors1992coat · 17/04/2025 22:52

Tentatively joining - I have tried Dickens a few times, never finished one yet but definitely see that as my problem, not his. Maybe being on a thread will help me to persevere. I don’t know anything about this one so that’s good I think.

ChessieFL · 18/04/2025 06:06

Thanks Piggy. I know absolutely nothing about Dombey & son so will have to do a bit of research before making a start! Looking forward to it.

I think I’ve been on all the readalongs except Bleak House - not sure if there are any others I’ve missed? I’ve done Our Mutual Friend, Little Dorrit, The Old Curiosity Shop, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield and Hard Times as well as Martin Chuzzlewit. I’ve enjoyed them all and I don’t think I would have got through all the books without these threads (and certainly wouldn’t have got as much from the books without everyone else’s insights).

Piggywaspushed · 18/04/2025 06:16

I'm not sure we did a HT readalong as it's very short but I do think that's all of the ones I have done, yes! I think you deserve a long service award!

Summerbaby81 · 18/04/2025 06:22

I will join too. I read this 20 years ago and loved it 🥰

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 18/04/2025 07:04

We did a readalong for Hard Times and we followed with The Woman in White.
I missed OMF and David Copperfield and Bleak House although I read BH myself.

Piggywaspushed · 18/04/2025 08:08

The Hard Times readalong really stuck in my memory then! Blush

We had some good times during the HT readalong. How could you forget, Piggy?!
😁😁

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 18/04/2025 09:02

HT was in 2022. Dombey will be the tenth book for this group!

BadSpellaSpellaSpella · 18/04/2025 10:52

Checking in, i think after this I'll only be a few books from reading the whole of Dickens works (alot of which I've read through these readalongs)

ChessieFL · 18/04/2025 12:26

I think I’ve still got 5 to read - The Pickwick Papers, Barnaby Rudge, Bleak House, A Tale Of Two Cities and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. I have listened to ATOTC but never properly read it. I also need to reread Great Expectations and Oliver Twist as it’s years since I read those.

Terpsichore · 18/04/2025 14:19

Thanks @Piggywaspushed ! I’m really going to try and follow along because, for a special birthday a few years ago, DH bought me this - a first edition of D & S in the original parts 🤗
