Stumbled across him when I was preggers and loved him but haven't read any more. Ridiculous but good ridiculous. Must get the new one.

Sidge · 27/03/2008 21:42

Sarahlou - get them all from the library - they are so good.

Need to read them in order?

Sidge · 27/03/2008 21:48

No, you don't have to. They all stand alone. But as you read more you see some themes linking them.

I love his books and have them all

I'm in love with Jack Reacher. I read them in order (haven't read the last two yet) just incase there are references to previous escapades.

Pillow · 27/03/2008 21:56

Oh it is good. Is the first book I've read and properly engaged in in months, and i am an AVID reader. But the baby doesn't understand that.

You can read them in order of publication, or in order of stuff that happens (there IS a word for that i know). Basically it means get The Enemy (i think - Reacher is still in the Army) first if you want to do the latter and then carry on with Killing Floor etc. But it doesn't matter. Just read them. Pure escapism joy.

And there is a Harlan Coben out in April!!! If only Dennis Lehane would bloody sit and type up a another book, I would be happy.

bran · 27/03/2008 22:14

Yes, yes, oh yes! I always have to wait until they come out in paperback though as I hate reading hardbacks.

Jack Reacher is indeed very fanciable. There's something about a morally-upright, emotionally-remote, manly man who can keep you safe from absolutely anything that is irresistible. I'm not sure what I would need to be kept safe from in my life though, the only danger I'm in is if the sea over-tops the Thames barrier or my plane misses the runway at City Airport (simultaneously the most frightening and most perfect airport I know).

turquoise · 27/03/2008 22:21

Love him, even though he is a ridiculously Bond/Bourne ishly invincible superhero - the plots are always so damn good.

My favourite one was the one set in a private army enclave somewhere in the midwest, think he got kidnapped with a woman to get there. (Have read about 8 of them, but always give them to Oxfam afterwards so can never remember the names.)

Last one I read was Bad Luck and Trouble (or something like that?) is there a newer one?

Have just got the Harlen Coben In the Woods to start, yay.

Pillow · 27/03/2008 22:24

I could NEVER wait for the paperbacks. When Bad Luck and Trouble came out I went to Waterstones on the day of publication and stole the only copy from behind the desk - well not stole, but I'm not sure why it was behind the desk and have been guilty ever since that someone reserved it. And this time they had no copies out either and on Sat the Waterstones woman went on a 20 min hunt and came back with a copy. I told her she'd made my Easter weekend. She looked at me like i was a bit sad. Which was prob fair.

Pillow · 27/03/2008 22:27

Turquoise, we gave them to Oxfam and ended up buying them again. Sometimes from Oxfam. Dh v strict about space, but has finally relented on the Lee Child's, where he has introduced me to the concept of re-reading (had never re-read a book in my life before). In the Woods not the best Harlan ever, but still Harlan. I miss Myron Bolitar.

procrastinatingbollyknickers · 27/03/2008 22:28

Glad to find some other fans. I discovered these last year, and literally could not put them down - I made the kids' dinner with one hand so I could keep turning pages. Not too badly written, but the plots are just the best.

Jack Reacher is the most ridiculously testosterone-filled hero ever - and I adore him. I have wondered many times who on earth could play him if they ever filmed the books. Any suggestions?

Pillow · 27/03/2008 22:33

Do you know i think they are in discussions with Lee Child on that very point and I have to say there is no-one who could do it and I think I would hate it. I loved the Dennis Lehane "Angie and Patrick" books, and was a bit two-minded about the Ben Affleck film they made of one of them. And it was the missing child one, and then M McCann happened, and they canned the release. I think sometimes a film can never ever be as good as your imagination.

turquoise · 27/03/2008 22:34

I don't want anyone too overmuscled ( ignore that bit in one of them about him looking like a condom filled with walnuts).

I see him more as a young Harrison Ford, in the early INdiana Jones days.

Love the whole lone wolf thing, with nothing but his toothbrush.

turquoise · 27/03/2008 22:36

Did Dennis Lehane write 'Mystic River'? That was a good adaptation.

I don't think I'd like a film of these though, same as I'm realy glad nothing came of the TV movie plans for Stephanie Plum.

Pillow · 27/03/2008 22:40

Oh I never heard about the Stephanie Plum plans. Could never have worked imo. Also, is it me or are they a bit harder to read lately?? You can't spin that choice between two men thing over so many books.

Mystic River was Dennis Lehane's first non "Angie and Patrick" book. And the consensus is that it was a great book and an amazing film and that he "came of age" as a writer etc etc etc. Whatever. I miss the Angie and Patrick stuff. I HATE when authors you love who write series you love do one-off novels out of the series and then go away on that tangent.

Has anyone read Christopher Brookmyre? I've just finished Quite Ugly One Morning and it was fast-moving and adreneline-filled, I liked it in the way that I liked the first Lee Child that I'd ever read. In fact, it was a swap on Read It Swap It for a Lee Child book.

wheresthehamster · 27/03/2008 22:44

Yes, I imagine him as a young Harrison Ford. Although Kevin Costner would be good (KC fan here )

wheresthehamster · 27/03/2008 22:46

I haven't read In The Woods yet. So it's not Myron? That's a shame - I like the banter at the office.

Pillow · 27/03/2008 22:50

Noooo to HF and KC. He would have to be an unknown imo.

I like Win. And Myron's parents.

bran · 27/03/2008 22:54

I've always imagined that the Mark Harmon character in NCIS is who Jack Reacher would have grown into if he hadn't left his job.

BecauseImWorthIt · 27/03/2008 22:58

OMG - I didn't know there was a new one out! I'm a huge fan.

I don't want anyone to make a film of them because there could never be anyone who could live up to my mind's interpretation of Jack.

And so few people have ever heard of them, I'm really stupidly pleased that this thread exists!

BecauseImWorthIt · 27/03/2008 22:59

Or - sad thought - is it just that 'Bad Luck and Trouble' is out in paperback? I've already read that.

Please tell me there's another one out?
