I haven’t received any books this Christmas. What have you received? My DC might need some hints for my birthday.

Me too! I can't wait to read them. I waited to read Fourth Wing when the hype started as I knew I'd want to read the second straight away.

Strokethefurrywall · 25/12/2023 13:59

Tess Gerritsen - The Spy Coast
Robert Galbraith - first 3 Comoran Strike books
Freida McFadden - The Housemaid

So excited to read them!

BarbaraBuncle · 25/12/2023 14:00

This is my/our Christmas haul for this year. I gave DH a shortlist of three Persephone books to choose one from, and he bought two of them 😀And the rest are sort of joint presents which we will share. Very pleased this year.

Middle waters- Ron Telford, about trawling in Grimsby in the 70s.
Jo Bartlet- Cornish Country Hospital. Just finished her Cornish midwife series.
Kevin sinfields autobiography
Tracey baines- women of fishers wharf, local book set in Grimsby in the 1920s. Read her first one expecting to hate it as its not my sort of book. Loved it.

PuttingDownRoots · 25/12/2023 14:20

Mine feels very low brow after the above lists! But I love this series... so bought myself the latest and gave it to DH to wrap.

Then my mother surprised me with a book voucher... she was going to buy me flowers but thought I might enjoy books more!

None. I think this is the first Christmas in my entire life that I've had none. Over forty years. It's very weird.

FizzingAda · 25/12/2023 14:31

Oh bought me Earth, from the TVseries with Chris Packham. Lovely loads of photos and lots of fascinating geo history.

TeeNoG · 25/12/2023 14:33

The Golem and the Djinni by Helen Wecker. Can't wait to read it over the next few weeks.

Cattiwampus · 25/12/2023 14:33

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain Winters in the World - A Journey Through the Anglo Saxon Year by Eleanor Parker.
I got this for my birthday and loved it. Have you got Marc Morris, The Anglo-Saxons? That’s a great read too.

I love fantasy and got Fourth wing and Iron flame, they’ll keep me busy, they’re huge

They're so big that I'm waiting for the paperbacks.

The only book I've recieved as a present is Murdle, which scarcely counts, but I did pick up a freebie copy of Babel a couple of weeks ago, which I'm looking forward to trying.

ValkyrieAssassin · 25/12/2023 15:36

I got my DS1 who is a 13 year old bookworm the penguin clothbound classic 1984 by George Orwell. He got me a book of daily inspirational quotes 'Here comes the Sun' because he knows I sometimes have depression and really love an enjoyable and inspirational quote.

Love this so much!!

BeaRF75 · 25/12/2023 15:49

A facsimile copy of Shakespeare's First Folio (an original would cost about £10 million!).
I'm absolutely delighted.... I almost bought one for myself a couple of months ago, but couldn't justify it.

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/12/2023 15:50

@ShakeItChilli they are so good! I loved them both and they blew me away!

LadyWithLapdog · 25/12/2023 17:05

Some great suggestions on here. I like the sound of the Hampton Court book. I’ve been many times over the years, and I probably read the story in the various guide books, but this sounds like an interesting take on it. Also the fantasy books. I see one is 600+ pages long. A leap of faith to go for it, “sight unseen”, but what a payoff if it’s enjoyable. I’ll go back through the thread see what else sounds really good.
