Jilly Cooper

I've had a few Jilly books on my kindle for a while now - since they were 99p each on Amazon! Missing - Polo. Does this affect the story arc? Is it worth the £3.99 current price?! Any thoughts appreciated.

I loved Polo. It was my favourite of the Rutshire books. Maybe wait until it gets reduced?

ChessieFL · 31/03/2023 05:56

There are references in later books to characters and events from Polo so you will get spoilers if you read the later ones first. Depends how much that bothers you really. You don’t have to read Polo to understand what’s going on in later books though.

TheOtherBennetSister · 02/04/2023 10:04

OMG I've only just noticed that they live in Rutshire. RUTshire 😅

vestanesta · 02/04/2023 18:52

I love Polo, second only to Rivals. Perdita is such an awful bitch.

Gunpowder · 02/04/2023 18:53

Rivals is coming to Disney+!

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 02/04/2023 18:54

It wasn't one of my favourites but if you're going to read it, it's best read in order - as others have said, there are spoilers for the main plot points in later books.

devildeepbluesea · 02/04/2023 18:55

I think you need Polo.

You won’t regret it, it’s such fun. Love Jilly.

Rivals is coming to Disney+!

I'm excited for this (might have to sign up for a trial of disney+ 😂). The cast looks brilliant.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts - apologies for the delay in noticing anyone had commented... Blush

Do you know, you've just made me realise I've never read any Jilly Cooper! I can't think why, it's right up my street. I might have to download some!

Goodiewhemper · 29/04/2023 09:19

I bought Polo on a Kindle daily deal a while back and am waiting for Rivals and Riders to come down in price. As a sci-fi/fantasy and historical fiction fan, they are not what I would usually read but a friend has highly recommended them and promised I won't regret a thing 😉

They are loads of fun. I didn't think they'd be my cup of tea either. I normally read sci-fi or horror with a bit of literary fiction.

But I love the Rutshire chronicles!

JosieOhNo · 29/04/2023 12:34

Is Polo the first one?

ChessieFL · 29/04/2023 13:11

No, Riders is first, then Rivals and then Polo.

orangelotus · 30/04/2023 09:46

i just wish there were more

ChessieFL · 30/04/2023 11:55

She is writing another set in the football world, but she’s been writing it for years now and no sign of a publication date so who knows if we’ll ever see it!

burnoutbabe · 30/04/2023 12:07

i love a re-read of jilly but generally skip a few

Riders - bit dated
Rivals - love
polo - okay
Man who made husbands jealous - good fun
appasionatta - okay - liked marcus and Flora here
Score - murder mystery - loved
Pandora - okay
Wicked - underage orgies, very dodgy
jump - mostly about a shagging 60 year old, felt weird.
Mount - am struggling on a 2nd re-read, as taggie is treated like crap

Iamblossom · 30/04/2023 12:09

Riders was a total revelation to my 13 year old self. Life changing. Adored it.

ShakeYourFeathers · 30/04/2023 12:10

I'm listening to Rivals via Audio book in anticipation to it coming on to Disney + have read it a few years ago, but forgotten most of it

Really enjoying it. And it's making me want to revisit others

orangelotus · 01/05/2023 09:42

i just wondered is there any equivalent kind of stuff being written now?
used to be Harold Robbins, Jacqueline Collins just easy fun reads. yes i realise they are of their time but is there anything like them now? A fast paced story some steamy scenes not too graphic and most of all funny!
everything seems to be thrillers with twists (yawn) or misery .
If anyone knows anything similar please shout out.
Marianne Keyes is the only one I can think of

ChessieFL · 01/05/2023 09:48

@orangelotus try Rebecca Chance. Early Tasmina Perry also.

BatFaceOwl · 01/05/2023 09:51

Jilly cooper is 86 now so I'm not sure if her much rumoured football book will see the light of day. I base that not so much on her age but on the fact you don't see or hear so much from her these days - perhaps understandably

Anyway, for me, there will never be anything that comes close to Prudence!

ChessieFL · 01/05/2023 09:55

I’ve just remembered it’s 1st May so time to repeat the lovely ditty from Rivals:

First of May, first of May
Outdoor fucking starts today
But as usual it do rain
So we fucks off indoors again
