Welp, I guess I’ll not bother reading that now I’ve just bought it. Thanks for that.

But it is a book loosely based on a true story

notanoxfordcomma · 15/02/2023 16:10

Between you and me by Lisa Hall

losingit31 · 15/02/2023 16:13

David Jackson Don't make a sound

@Ursuladevinia82 But it is a book loosely based on a true story

It's not exactly a well-known true story is it? It's pretty bad to come onto a thread asking for stories with a twist and then to reveal the twist.

I regard it as very well known 🤷‍♀️
But if you don’t then… clearly not! 😂

MamaNewtNewt · 15/02/2023 17:33

Just because you know it doesn't make it well-known 🙄

And regardless it's a really twatty thing to do to reveal a twist, particularly on a thread asking about books with a twist.

And?

I didn’t reveal it

my point was the PP who did “reveal” it probably made an assumption that it was known that based on RL.

MamaNewtNewt · 15/02/2023 17:46

I didn't say anywhere that you revealed it. I questioned your assertion that it was a well known true story. And then made the point that even if it were well known, that to reveal it at all, but especially on a thread such as this, is a twatty thing to do. I did not said that you did said twatty thing. You can see that this has ruined it for at least one poster who has just bought the book.

Aposterhasnoname · 15/02/2023 17:35

And?

That it might explain why the PP made an assumption.

She didn’t realise that the horrifying and scary consequences.

Now this very thread has a twist! 😂

What makes a “twisty” book good is when you aren’t expecting the twist.

if you follow up a recommendation for a book with a twist, all you will be doing is waiting for the twist!

When I read Daniel Deronda the introduction says 'don't read the introduction until you've read the book first because it'll spoil the denouement'. So I read the book thinking 'could what's just happened be the denouement?' All the way through. Reading it in the 21st century the denouement wasn't quite the shocking reveal it was for the Victorians.

Atonement that twist both annoyed me and then made me annoyed at myself for being annoyed about the twist. Which will make no sense to those who haven't read it.

OneFrenchEgg · 15/02/2023 18:45

I've reported the original spoiler - it annoyed me at the time as that was one where I was into it and then mum said 'have you found out xxx yet?' Plus I can see others have also not known yet

Yikes the drama of it all! 🤣

Another vote for the Silent Patient

Dashie · 23/02/2023 14:33

I’ve just read Fingersmith following many recommendations from here.
Oohh it was good!
Even though I knew there was a twist coming I didn’t expect it as it happened. It is a very good book!

whirlyhead · 11/02/2023 21:45

We need to talk about Kevin. That book totally threw me for six when I read it.

Agree with this.

CatNamedEaster · 24/02/2023 15:27

Sister by Rosamond Lupton. For some reason I can't make myself read it a second time as I'm almost scared to find out that the ending means the opposite of what I think/hope it means.😂

Non-fiction, one of the best books I've read, The Less You Know The Sounder You Sleep by Juliet Butler. It's about conjoined twins who grew up in the Soviet era. When I found out something about one of their friends at the end it really shocked me in terms of how my pre-conceived ideas had made an assumption about someone that was completely wrong. A tiny aspect of the book but I guess it had a profound impact on me due to that aspect alone.

God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson.

The last third blew my mind. I still think about it
years later

Read Life After Life first though.

Yes I agree - I still think about A God in Ruins. I think it’s even better than Life after Life 😊

funnyoldonion · 01/03/2023 22:48

Bluesycamore · 11/02/2023 22:17

Agree!

Me too!

RaininginDarling · 01/03/2023 23:45

Absolutely @Cityzen74 - although I really grew to love the whole family and loved how GiR puts more flesh on the bones of characters we meet in LAL. I slightly envy anyone who is coming to those books for the first time.

Daphne du Maurier's

My cousin Rachael.

Unreliable narrator.

Brilliant!

loubieloo4 · 02/03/2023 03:13

Place marking also! Have been stuck in a no reading few months ad maybe a good gritty book will do the trick.

FinallyHere · 02/03/2023 14:42

@cassiatwenty

😀

And I haven't recovered from over 50% of book club not.even.noticing

Sigh. the.while.point

And I'm really not great at explaining stuff like that.

@tealgate I HATED that book honestly I nearly chucked it across the room when I realised.

You hated The Murder of Roger Ackroyd??? Best twist EVER imo

MidgeHardcastle · 03/03/2023 17:07

I enjoyed Gentlemen and Players by Joanne Harris. Felt smug when I got the 'twist' but there was more to come.
