Mincepiedermama · 17/12/2007 22:31

How to talk so that children blah blah blah...

I haven't been able to get into the mindset for fiction for many years now. Perhaps one day ...

Miss Webster and Cherif.
v light.

Bink · 17/12/2007 22:37

In the Heart of the Amazon Forest, Walter Henry Bates (my commuting reading); and Borneo, Celebes, Aru, by Alfred Russel Wallace (my falling-asleep reading)

vols X and Y of the Penguin historical-travelogue extracts series - some are better than others. I absolutely adored Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, and very much liked the dry chap who tried to replicate Galvani's discoveries on electric eels in early 19th c. Venezuela. Gives me loads of "urgh Mummy no REALLY DID they?" stuff to regale the children with too.

makemineadouble · 17/12/2007 22:46

AmersG · 19/12/2007 20:37

I've just finished Affinity by Sara Waters which was brilliant, am now about to start The House at Riverton which I see is popular on here!

TwoIfBySanta · 24/12/2007 12:18

Cappuccino · 24/12/2007 12:26

Burma Boy by Biyi Bandele

and Carys Davies' short stories

gingerninja · 24/12/2007 12:30

Quiet American, Graeme Greene. It's taking me ages though as I only get through a page before I'm asleep.

Deborah Jackson, Three in a Bed

adventkerzylin · 26/12/2007 12:39

A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon reccommended on here when I was searching for books that are moving but not sad on here
I got loads of ideas and was sent 8 books for Christmas, can't put A spot of bother down and am nearly finished it (started it last night)

mmmcneil · 26/12/2007 16:56

I'm still trying to get into Atonement by Ian McEwan but am not particularly gripped by it, the way I was with On Chesil Beach.

Still, I'm only on the third chapter and just read a few reviews on Amazon that said it was slow for the first 35/200 pages.

andfranksentthis · 27/12/2007 09:07

MuffinMclay · 27/12/2007 09:16

Shopaholic and Baby. Crap, but good crap.

TenLordsaLapin · 27/12/2007 09:36

Cryptonomicon is an amazing book. Try Perdido Street Station by China Melville too if you like that sort of thing.

I'm reading "Heaven knows I'm miserable now" - Andrew Collins; "Metal Swarm: Saga of Seven Suns, book 6" - Kevin Anderson; and "A New Model of the Universe" - PD Ouspensky.

BBBee · 27/12/2007 09:43

the corrections

Maidamess · 27/12/2007 10:45

I read The Corrections. What do you think of it? I am reading My Booky Wook by Russell Brand, suprisingly well written.

slayerette · 27/12/2007 11:12

Post-birthday World - Lionel Shriver
Bridget Jones (again! - nice and light over Christmas while parents here)
The Torment of Others - Val McDermid (love my crime fiction)
about to start Passion by Jude Morgan - novel based on lives and loves of Romantic poets so hoping for good stuff from Byron!
