50 Book Challenge 2021 Part Eight

southeastdweller · 22/11/2021 23:21

Welcome to the eighth (and probably final) thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2021, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, it’s not too late to and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read. The lurkers among you are also very welcome to come out of the woodwork and share with us what you've read!

The first thread of the year is here, the second one here, the third one here, the fourth one here, the fifth one here, the sixth one here and the seventh one here.

How have you got on this year?

@PermanentTemporary thanks so much for compiling the list, really interesting. I've read 6 of the 9 and they are all worthy. If the 3 I've missed, I'm not sure that I fancy the Isis one, I don't read much non fiction, Grace Dent appeals more in that category as I love her columns. And I should have read Nancy Mitford, I've just never got round to it.

@Cassandre I feel the same way about Leila Slimani. I didn't enjoy Lullaby but think I will give this a go on @JaninaDuszejko's recommendation.

@SOLINVICTUS @FranKatzenjammer The Ramble Book was my first book of the year. Adam Buxton went to the same boarding school as I did, but was a few years older, so was good to get his impressions.

Last books of the year, crime for Christmas:
106. The Appeal - Janice Hallett
107. Thursday Murder Club - Richard Osman.
Both much reviewed on here. I enjoyed the concept of The Appeal but thought I'd was a bit obvious what was going on. I Sharp enjoyed Osman, wasn't expecting too much given the hype and backlash and it landed comfortably in the middle for me.

Happy New Year 50 Bookers, its been lovely to be part of this thread this year.

Terpsichore · 31/12/2021 16:20

FranKatzenjammer and SOLINVICTUS I'm literally just listening to Adam Buxton's Christmas podcast with Joe Cornish and crying with laughter. Highly recommend investigating the podcasts if you haven't already. I've got the book and really must get round to it in 2022.

FortunaMajor · 31/12/2021 19:26

I've finally got there with my list. I'm being cheeky and have completely bolded my 5 star books and have half bolded my 4 stars. Stinkers are in italics.

Thank you all for being brilliant company this year as always. I look forward to the next year of reading with you and can't wait for the debates and recommendations.

Thanks Southeast for hosting.

Hang onto your hats ready for the January thread madness.

Tanaqui · 31/12/2021 19:57

Thank you for the lists @PermanentTemporary and @Tarahumara.

One last one for the year- taking me to about 130, the most I have read since I joined the 50 bookers! But there were a lot of easy comfort reads. Green for Danger by Christianna Brand. I thought I'd try this after she bobbed up in the golden age short story collection I read, as I remember really enjoying Nurse Matilda when I was little; but although this did have a nice setting (ww2 military hospital) and a good plot, it was just a little too real and too sad for me- I like my murders a bit more cosy.
Happy new year my lovelies!

LadybirdDaphne · 31/12/2021 20:23

Happy New Year everyone! Thanks so much to southeast for hosting this delightful

LadybirdDaphne · 31/12/2021 20:31

Oops didn’t mean to post! For hosting this delightful corner of the internet!

My reading resolutions are to keep plodding on (the glory days of 100 books that I achieved when I was a SAHM in lockdown are long gone!). Perhaps up the proportion of fiction, but due to real life there’ll probably still be quite a bit of self-help/parenting stuff in there. (DD is seriously struggling with starting school and we’ve started an assessment process, with anxiety and/or ASD being suspected.)

Anyway, see you all on the 2022 threads!

MegBusset · 31/12/2021 20:40

Thank you @PermanentTemporary for the list, will have a look through for 2022 ideas!

Thank you to @southeastdweller for hosting the threads and to everyone for being here. Although I didn't quite make the 50, this thread and the reading it's inspired have been a refuge in a stormy year. Happy New Year to all!

StColumbofNavron · 31/12/2021 22:09

I hope it’s ok to sort of straddle the 26 and 50 thread. I enjoy both in different ways.

My main goals are to read more of what I already own, in particular hard copy books on my shelves. I’ve got two book subscriptions that I received as gifts for my birthday so I want to read those books - one is diverse writers and the other plays.

BestIsWest · 31/12/2021 23:39

Just nipping in at the end of 2021 to thank all the 50 bookers for the best threads on Mums-net. See you all in 2022. May all our books be good ones .

FortunaMajor · 31/12/2021 23:46

Just realised I never spoke about my last two books.

Underland - Robert Macfarlane
Macfarlane adventures underground and long may he stay there.

I found some parts of this incredibly interesting, but he does harp on and I found myself getting bored. I feel his work might be better suited to dipping in and out of rather than the full onslaught all at once.

Feminism for Women: The Real Route to Liberation - Julie Bindel
Julie discusses the state of modern feminism, the issues with it and the direction it needs to take to achieve anything. She discusses Equality Vs Liberation, Liberal vs Radical feminism and the goals of feminism for women as opposed to the type of feminism men will gain from and approve of.

As Julie herself is fond of saying, there are many ways to be a feminist and most of them are wrong. 20% in and I was ready to set the world on fire. This is a call to arms.

Happy New Year folks.

We know of this other place, yet none of us go there. Wink

I suspect there may be a fair bit of crossover. No rules round here, other than read and tell us about it. Nobody really cares about the numbers.

noodlezoodle · 01/01/2022 05:50

Snuck my 50th in under the wire! (It's still 2021 where I am).

50. Sex And The City And Us, by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong. Sex and the City is one of my guilty pleasures so this was a fast, easy read with some interesting behind the scenes information. However, I think I'd have enjoyed it more as an essay as there was just SO much extraneous detail. A nice gentle way to end this year's reading though.

Thank you all 50 Bookers for your companionship, recommendations, and occasional very polite arguments Grin

I’ll start the 2022 thread shortly.

Thank you all for this thread.
Completed 55 books this year. I lost my reading concentration 8 years ago with a nightmare house move and I'm so pleased to be back into regular reading Smile
Happy 2022 to all

I can't quite believe I managed it, but I have read (or listened to) 365 books this year, so one for each day. I wasn't sure if I would manage that. Part of me is pleased, but equally I have read a lot of crap this year so that shows it's really not the numbers that are important. At the begionning of this year I had 219 unread books on my kindle and one of my goals was to clear a lot of them. That's one reason I have read a lot of crappy psycholigical thrillers this year as I am a bit of a sucker for the 99p deals. I have ended the year with 132 unread books on my kindle. I haven't cleared as many as I hoped, but at least it hasn't gone up. I aim to clear more of them in 2022 (and I must stop getting caught up in 99p deals and not buy more rubbish!)

My stats:
68% female, 30% male, 2% both or unknown.
50% kindle, 27% physical, 17% library, 6% audible.
71% fiction, 24% non fiction, 6% children's fiction.
88% were new, 12% were rereads (mainly audible or Christmas books).

Wow Chessie - 365 books!! Amazing!

FortunaMajor · 01/01/2022 10:05

Chessie that's amazing! If reading had Olympians, you'd be the gold medallist. I'm well impressed.

ChessieFL · 01/01/2022 10:22

Like I said, I’ve had quantity but not quality this year. There’s a lot of rubbish there and some of them I wouldn’t now be able to tell you anything about without looking them up. There were a few gems though! And lockdown definitely helped, won’t be able to do that again in future (well, until I retire anyway!)

bibliomania · 01/01/2022 10:27

Very psychologically satisfying total, Chessie - and it's pleasing to make inroads into the tbr pile.

Thanks as always, southeast, heading over to the new thread now.

@PermanentTemporary what a superstar statistician! Thank you. DH and I both pored over the lists and made notes for the coming year's reading. See you all over on the 2022 thread.
