southeastdweller · 22/11/2021 23:21

Welcome to the eighth (and probably final) thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2021, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, it’s not too late to and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read. The lurkers among you are also very welcome to come out of the woodwork and share with us what you've read!

The first thread of the year is here, the second one here, the third one here, the fourth one here, the fifth one here, the sixth one here and the seventh one here.

How have you got on this year?

Thanks for new thread. I’m not doing a list but latest read:

The Authority Gap by Mary Ann Sieghart

All about why women are taken less seriously than men in professional life. Definitely worth a read if you were a fan of Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez a couple of years ago. The chapter on how gender and race combine to make it extra difficult was interesting, as was the chapter interviewing transgender people who could give the perspective of being treated differently depending on their gender.

Thanks for the thread @southeastdweller

Flowers @FranKatzenjammer, sorry for your rotten year

Mine has definitely been up and down. Not going to get to 50 (can't even remember the last year that I did!) so thanks everyone for not booting me out Grin

Currently reading no. 35 Betjeman's England and listening to 36 Alone On The Ice - vintage Antarctic exploration stuff from David Roberts. So hoping to get to 40 this year.

And most recently:
45. Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens read for the read along, and as I failed to read last months chapters in time I've pushed through this month and finished it ahead of schedule. I'll keep my thoughts for the book group thread, but it has mid table respectability in my personal Dickens league table.

46.	The Light Years by Elizabeth Jane Howard. This took me an age to get into, a seemingly bewildering cast of characters, both Upstairs and Downstairs. Still not absolutely sure of the relationships of some of the characters to each other, particularly the children. Listening on Audible doesn't help as you can't flick back and check who is who. However I have had a couple of long car journeys where I stuck it on and went with the flow and little by little relationships and characters started to make sense and gradually I was pulled into their world to the extent that now I've finished it I've immediately downloaded the next book in the series, Marking Time.

I seem to remember there was a discussion here to the effect that JEH should have knocked the series on the head after the third book and it's best not to read the last two, am I remembering that correctly?

Four more to go to hit the target but I'm on a real reading go slow atm. Time to pick some shorter books I think!

No list for me - really not doing well with my reading this year.
Just finished The Owl Service and can honestly say it made no more sense to me now than it did when I was 11.
Reading a Jane Fallon thing that I don’t know if I want to continue with. Nothing wrong with it, just not for me.
