I guess the world has gone "misery" mad.

Well, at least a woman has won it.

And reading misery is quite cheering, really - makes you think how lucky you are! I hate reading really jolly books where everyone is beautiful, happy, rich, blah blah... !

pigletmaker · 18/10/2007 13:15

That's a good point. I can't remember a woman winning it before, its very boys club the Booker.

I liked Indra Sinha's book. A lot. I wanted him to win.

wheelsonthebus · 18/10/2007 13:19

hobnobfanatic - if you want misery read Lover of Unreason.

Hobnobfanatic · 18/10/2007 15:18

Oooh - that's spooky Wheelsonthebus - it's on my wishlist. Have you read it? I've been a Plath fan since adolescence, and loved Birthday Letters too.

EmsMum · 18/10/2007 15:33

There haven't been many women for a while, but I'd guess its around a third of the total. Not that I've read many of them.

ggglimpopo · 18/10/2007 15:35

She wrote a swingeing article on the McCanns and apparently the book is as miserable as hell.

My information is gleaned from daily mail on line so is obviously totally accurate.

motherinferior · 18/10/2007 15:38

The Indra Sinha book is Miserable in that it is about Bhopal, but it is also energetic and swingeing and generally robust. And it's in paperback so really quite affordable.

ggglimpopo · 18/10/2007 15:42

I am on an India tag at the mo. Will definitly buy the Bophal book.

Bundle · 18/10/2007 15:42

I was quite pleased when i heard her reaction on the Today programme, giggling and excited, not like the pompous, sneery men who usually win these things and then say snidey things about prizes etc.

then i saw about the mccann's article. and it DOES look a miserable book.

now don't know what to think

ggglimpopo · 18/10/2007 15:42

ahem.

Cant spell.

Bundle · 18/10/2007 15:43

sorry about that stray apostrophe. mccanns

motherinferior · 18/10/2007 15:48

also Indra Sinha (apart from being a Nice Angloindian Boy) looks like a nice bloke.

I was about to say that I have jsut bought a new book on India, but when I went to check the title I realised that it is called 'Winter in Madrid'. Mad, moi?

motherinferior · 18/10/2007 15:55

Madras, Madrid, who cares, eh?

wrinklytum · 22/10/2007 00:23

Ann Enright wrote a VERY (imho) book about children and childbirth called "Making Babies".The bit about buying a buggy was side splittingly funny.Have not read her Booker one but read this.It is quite mumsnettish.Honest!

Beenleigh · 22/10/2007 00:24

my mum read it and said it wasn't depressing at all, is she very wrong. I must say, I really like the look of it

Beenleigh · 22/10/2007 00:25

yes, I heard her on today too, and she was lovely, reallyt light, fun, self effacing and lovely

AussieSim · 22/10/2007 01:22

Margaret Attwood won the Booker a few years back for The Blind Assassin and didn't Arundhati Roy win it too for The God of Small Things. This Enright one sounds a bit 'Angela's Ashes' for my taste.

TheEvilDediderata · 22/10/2007 01:28

I read an extract in the Telegraph.

I didn't like it at all, but I was totally absorbed in a way that I haven't been for years. I doubt that makes sense, but literature rarely does.

I thought her attack on the McCann's very bizarre. Why bother? And she resembles a paving slab.

TheEvilDediderata · 22/10/2007 01:29

I thought The Blind Assassin was a crap book.

AussieSim · 22/10/2007 03:30

Attwood certainly has written better books ... Maybe they just thought they would give her a turn!

Beenleigh · 22/10/2007 09:27

The Blind Assassin is an AMAZING book!

stleger · 22/10/2007 09:38

It was won by Kiran Desai last year, a woman!
