I guess the world has gone "misery" mad.

apparently the piece she wrote about the McCanns has been quoted out of context and wasn't what it seemed at all.... Can't remember where I copied this from, think it might've been the Telegraph..

"It was not an attack on the McCanns. It was a subtle, humane, and darkly funny essay about self-examination, second thoughts and the ugliness and presumption of the way in which our national obsession with the McCanns makes us feel entitled to praise or condemn, like or dislike, these people whom we have never met, and about whom we know next to nothing"

The full text of the McCann article is available on the London Review of Books website, I think. It is an examination of the way she hears a bit of tabloid news, examines it to see if it is true - 'of course, that must be what happened' - and then realises why it isn't necessarily the truth. She also admits to noticing the details of Kate's hair, clothes etc. In fact, she might have had a read of the mumsnet threads? And her conclusion is that the next day, she likes the McCanns again.
