Our Mutual Friend Readalong

As discussed on the previous Davis Copperfield Readalong, I hope some of us are eager to start Our Mutual Friend!

This is quite a complex one to break up. As usual, Dickens published in 19 monthly instalments but this one has 4 'Books' .

It is split up as follows:

BOOK THE FIRST: THE CUP AND THE LIP
I – May 1864 (chapters 1–4);
II – June 1864 (chapters 5–7);
III – July 1864 (chapters 8–10);
IV – August 1864 (chapters 11–13);
V – September 1864 (chapters 14–17).
BOOK THE SECOND: BIRDS OF A FEATHER
VI – October 1864 (chapters 1–3);
VII – November 1864 (chapters 4–6);
VIII – December 1864 (chapters 7–10);
IX – January 1865 (chapters 11–13);
X – February 1865 (chapters 14–16).
BOOK THE THIRD: A LONG LANE
XI – March 1865 (chapters 1–4);
XII – April 1865 (chapters 5–7);
XIII – May 1865 (chapters 8–10);
XIV – June 1865 (chapters 11–14);
XV – July 1865 (chapters 15–17).
BOOK THE FOURTH: A TURNING
XVI – August 1865 (chapters 1–4);
XVII – September 1865 (chapters 5–7);
XVIII – October 1865 (chapters 8–11);
XIX-XX – November 1865 [chapters 12–17 (Chapter the Last)].

4 instalments is feasible but might be too much for those of us working/ reading other books/child or DP wrangling/ insert other reason.

Therefore, I would suggest 8 instalments, splitting each book in two somehow?

That would take us to March 2021 and then we can pretend 2020 never existed.

Up for it? Thoughts?

Looking forward to it! All usual suspects and newcomers welcome.

Welcome Miles! Look forward to you joining us when you’ve caught up.

FortunaMajor · 15/12/2020 13:27

Of course, the more the merrier. First of the month for chat on the next section as discussed above. Feel free to jump in with any observations or comments on past chapters.

Welcome to the thread.

MilesJuppIsAnOldSlutOnJunk · 17/12/2020 15:51

Thanks for the welcome @ChessieFL and @FortunaMajor Xmas Smile

I've just read the chapter describing Rogue Rider's Limehouse Hole dwelling, (poor Pleasant), and found this great link with a couple of photos from around that time.

I found it really interesting

ChessieFL · 18/12/2020 05:29

That is interesting, thanks Miles

FortunaMajor · 18/12/2020 07:13

That was fascinating, thank you.

InTheCludgie · 27/12/2020 12:13

Hi all, I'm coming to this thread very late, have bought a kindle version of OMF and hoping that I can follow all the way through. I started with the Bleak House and David Copperfield readalongs but unfortunately personal circumstances meant I never got as far as I intended with either - third time lucky I hope!

AliceinBunniland · 27/12/2020 12:16

I checked into the thread earlier abs gut the book but haven't started reading!

Piggyinblankets · 31/12/2020 14:48

Hello hello hello - tis I, OP, very poorly disguised with festive name, and special hello and wave to jupp!

Planning to convene tomorrow? I have just finished and already written my thought n a Word Doc . Smug zone!

ChessieFL · 31/12/2020 14:53

I still have 4 chapters to read! I will have read them by tomorrow morning - not sure I’ll be able to add much to the discussion though! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts Piggy.

Piggywaspushed · 01/01/2021 07:58

Happy New Year all! Let’s hope 2021 offers us all better days!

I have finished these chapters. It was a long section but more pacy. I now declare myself Team Bella. I think she is a good sort.

Eugene is terribly entitled and is surely going to lead the ominous and terrifying Headstone straight to her?

I am disappointed that dear Mr Boffin is being turned by self improvement and money but it’s all part of social commentary, isn’t it, along with the sad death of Betty Higden? I do feel like the plots are beginning to converge.

Surely everyone’s favourite bit in this instalment was Mr Boffin’s tbr pile which tickled me pink and sounds like so many 50 bookers! :-
‘and there, through the window of the cab, [he] descried Mr Boffin inside, blocked up with books…..
‘’Catch hold of that pile of wollumes, Wegg, or it’ll bulge out and burst into the mud’’
‘Not ceasing to talk and bustle, in a state of great excitement, Mr Boffin directed the removal and arrangement of the books, appearing to be in some sort of beside himself until they were all deposited on the floor ,and the cab was dismissed’
Brilliant, Dickens!

Happy new year Piggy and fellow OMF readers.

After last month’s action packed section this felt to me like going back to being rather bitty.

Betty Higson’s death was very sad, but I’m glad people travelled for her funeral.

I did like the bit about Boffin’s books! I wonder if more things are going to be found in the Mounds?

FortunaMajor · 01/01/2021 10:51

I definitely smiled about the books.

A bit of an about face on Bella, she really wasn't liked at the end of the previous part.

It will be interesting to see what comes of the will situation.

I feel like this part was another setting up section rather than moving things forward. I don't know if it's installment related but it feels like a very oddly paced book.

Piggywaspushed · 01/01/2021 11:05

I guess it is setting us up for the final chapters of Book The Third?

Oddly enough I found this part less bitty!

Good morning! Happy new year!

(Thanks for the welcome piggy Xmas Grin).

I'm still behind, but have read it a couple of times before, and - although my memory is patchy - I broadly remember the various arcs & resolutions.

The Boffins Books Bit is marvellous, and feels particularly apt today. So many plans, hopes and expectations! So much lovely, naive optimism!

One thing I've found particularly interesting is my shift in attitude towards the Lizzie-Charley relationship, as I - ahem - mature in years.

I mean, obviously, he's a bit of an odious little squit, but he's right to be concerned about her relationship with Eugene. I think I was in my early twenties when I first read it, and was Team Eugene, but now I just think they should all just bloody leave her alone.

Piggywaspushed · 01/01/2021 12:59

Oh they should!

I also meant to mention Dickens' stand against anti semitism which I found rather warming. I like the bit with the worried vicar's wife having to go and reassure herself that no osmotic radicalisation had occurred!

The reader formerly known as Idiom here!

I rattled through this month's chapters and enjoyed seeing some of the plot strands come together (eg Lizzie gets linked up with Bella and Rokesmith). Bella is getting more sympathetic as she reflects on the effect of wealth on Mr Boffin's character and his treatment of Rokesmith, and her relationship with her father makes me laugh. My favourite bit was when she tried to cook the chickens:

"'But what,'said Bella... 'makes them pink inside, I wonder, Pa! Is it the breed?'
"'No, I don't think it's the breed, my dear,' returned Pa. 'I rather think it is because they are not done.'
"'They ought to be,' said Bella.
"'Yes, I'm aware they ought to be, my dear,' rejoined her father, 'but they--ain't.'"

Piggywaspushed · 01/01/2021 13:32

Ha! I'd forgotten the disastrous cooking! It was like Ria from Butterflies , if you are old enough!

OP posts:
ChessieFL · 01/01/2021 14:06

Oh yes, that cooking scene was hilarious! Funnily enough I was watching an episode of Butterflies the other day...

Piggywaspushed · 01/01/2021 14:11

Me too!

OP posts:
LadybirdDaphne · 01/01/2021 19:41

I am just about old enough (late 30s) to get the Butterflies reference, but it's something my mum used to watch really!

Piggywaspushed · 01/01/2021 20:10

Yes, mine too. My mum was an equally awful cook.

Checking in after falling hideously behind last month Blush

I'm back into it now and interested to see how the Bella and Lizzie plotlines develop. Still can't make my mind up about Wrayburn!

Piggywaspushed · 01/01/2021 21:54

I imagine Eugene as terribly good looking and hard to not be attracted to. An entitled type.

Despite what some people say about Dickens drawing simpering and not as interesting female characters, a lot of his female characters are drawn with far more detail and grit than he is given credit for . There is him in TOTOC, yes, and Pip in GE has never interested me plus whathisface in Bleak House (the young good looking one) : he is rather vapid, too!
