Our Mutual Friend Readalong

As discussed on the previous Davis Copperfield Readalong, I hope some of us are eager to start Our Mutual Friend!

This is quite a complex one to break up. As usual, Dickens published in 19 monthly instalments but this one has 4 'Books' .

It is split up as follows:

BOOK THE FIRST: THE CUP AND THE LIP
I – May 1864 (chapters 1–4);
II – June 1864 (chapters 5–7);
III – July 1864 (chapters 8–10);
IV – August 1864 (chapters 11–13);
V – September 1864 (chapters 14–17).
BOOK THE SECOND: BIRDS OF A FEATHER
VI – October 1864 (chapters 1–3);
VII – November 1864 (chapters 4–6);
VIII – December 1864 (chapters 7–10);
IX – January 1865 (chapters 11–13);
X – February 1865 (chapters 14–16).
BOOK THE THIRD: A LONG LANE
XI – March 1865 (chapters 1–4);
XII – April 1865 (chapters 5–7);
XIII – May 1865 (chapters 8–10);
XIV – June 1865 (chapters 11–14);
XV – July 1865 (chapters 15–17).
BOOK THE FOURTH: A TURNING
XVI – August 1865 (chapters 1–4);
XVII – September 1865 (chapters 5–7);
XVIII – October 1865 (chapters 8–11);
XIX-XX – November 1865 [chapters 12–17 (Chapter the Last)].

4 instalments is feasible but might be too much for those of us working/ reading other books/child or DP wrangling/ insert other reason.

Therefore, I would suggest 8 instalments, splitting each book in two somehow?

That would take us to March 2021 and then we can pretend 2020 never existed.

Up for it? Thoughts?

Looking forward to it! All usual suspects and newcomers welcome.

Checking in.

Considering doing as an Audible, Meera Syal reading. What would be the first "checkpoint" as it were?

Piggywaspushed · 04/08/2020 17:23

Meera Syal! Should be good. I can't do an audiobook : can't store the information, for some reason.

I think first checkpoint could be first three instalments, so to the end of Chapter 10 by end August?

Thanks Piggy. March seems a long way off but it’ll soon come round.

Sounds good. As you say I’d like to read other things and children and work don’t allow much leeway. Quite looking forward to doing it this way.

Terpsichore · 04/08/2020 18:26

Signing in.

FortunaMajor · 04/08/2020 18:39

Reporting for duty.

I'm also going to listen to the Meera Syal narration. I do feel I get more from a print copy, but at least with audio I can plan using the timings, as I am usually last minute to get round to it.

The plan sounds good so far.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 04/08/2020 18:42

I'm planning on doing a mix Fortuna I will read from the free Kindle edition with the Audio on. x

ChessieFL · 04/08/2020 18:56

I’m in and happy with your suggestion Piggy. Thanks for organising this. Will dig out my copy tonight!

PepeLePew · 04/08/2020 19:11

Hello everyone. I’m in. I like Dickens and have never read OMF. Need to dust off the copy I’ve owned for what seems like a very long time.

nowanearlyNicemum · 04/08/2020 20:50

That sounds good Piggy. Don't want to rush it.

Little by little I've been collecting the Penguin classics with covers designed by Coralie Bickford Smith as I was at primary school with her - gutted to discover Our Mutual Friend doesn't feature in their collection so am trying to find another solution. Are you thinking Chapter 10 for end of August?

Indigosalt · 04/08/2020 21:00

Thanks for organising Piggy - I'm in.

Piggywaspushed · 04/08/2020 21:32

Welcome all : yes , to end chapter 10. I might start tomorrow!

I have just looked her up nearly : beautiful work!

Nuffaluff · 04/08/2020 21:40

I will join if that’s okay.

Piggywaspushed · 04/08/2020 21:44

Of course!

Catawaul · 04/08/2020 21:54

I'd like to join - I have the book which is a good start! I haven't read a book since before my children were born so something with chapters seems achievable!

AliceinBunnyland · 04/08/2020 22:00

Hi I haven't seen a read along before, how does this work? One section per week?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 04/08/2020 22:43

I've started and I am loathing the satire in Chapter Two. Clunky and repetitive. I will carry on though.

AliceinBunnyland · 04/08/2020 23:07

OK I've worked it out!

Anyone on Audible with the Meera Syal version? Has mixed reviews so I'm not sure.

Piggywaspushed · 05/08/2020 09:26

I worry about it being heavier than David C. eine but it is Katie form Books and Things favourite Dickens, so we'll see! It seems to be highly rated by lots of Dickens fans.

I'm in, although when I tried to do a Bleak House read along I got too caught up in the story and ended up finishing it far too quickly, I'll try to be more controlled this time! I've never read OMF, but I think I may have seen an adaptation 🤔

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 05/08/2020 12:33

Hi Alice I'll probably do a mix of free kindle edition and Audible download, having just changed from a monthly subscription to a 24 credit annual deal (as recommended by Eine on the 50 book thread I think) I'm very free and easy when it comes to audible downloads these days Smile

highlandcoo · 05/08/2020 12:40

Thanks for organising this Piggy. I loved OMF when I first read it over 30 years ago so really looking forward to revisiting and discussing it.

That would take us to March 2021 and then we can pretend 2020 never existed. What a great thought.

AliceinBunnyland · 05/08/2020 13:13

I didn't know about that deal DesdamonasHandkerchief I have about four credits to use though and lots of books I haven't read so I might use the credits and then cancel / pause for a bit

So is the point of this that we discuss each section of the book as we get to it?

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 05/08/2020 13:21

Piggy is suggesting reading to the end of chapter 10 by the end of this month, then discussing that, before going on to the next section in September.

HarlanWillYouStopNamingNuts · 05/08/2020 13:42

I'd like to join, please! I haven't read any Dickens so I'm hoping this is a good place to start and that the discussions will enrich the experience. I will be reading this on my Kindle. Thank you for getting us started, piggy.
