Our Mutual Friend Readalong

As discussed on the previous Davis Copperfield Readalong, I hope some of us are eager to start Our Mutual Friend!

This is quite a complex one to break up. As usual, Dickens published in 19 monthly instalments but this one has 4 'Books' .

It is split up as follows:

BOOK THE FIRST: THE CUP AND THE LIP
I – May 1864 (chapters 1–4);
II – June 1864 (chapters 5–7);
III – July 1864 (chapters 8–10);
IV – August 1864 (chapters 11–13);
V – September 1864 (chapters 14–17).
BOOK THE SECOND: BIRDS OF A FEATHER
VI – October 1864 (chapters 1–3);
VII – November 1864 (chapters 4–6);
VIII – December 1864 (chapters 7–10);
IX – January 1865 (chapters 11–13);
X – February 1865 (chapters 14–16).
BOOK THE THIRD: A LONG LANE
XI – March 1865 (chapters 1–4);
XII – April 1865 (chapters 5–7);
XIII – May 1865 (chapters 8–10);
XIV – June 1865 (chapters 11–14);
XV – July 1865 (chapters 15–17).
BOOK THE FOURTH: A TURNING
XVI – August 1865 (chapters 1–4);
XVII – September 1865 (chapters 5–7);
XVIII – October 1865 (chapters 8–11);
XIX-XX – November 1865 [chapters 12–17 (Chapter the Last)].

4 instalments is feasible but might be too much for those of us working/ reading other books/child or DP wrangling/ insert other reason.

Therefore, I would suggest 8 instalments, splitting each book in two somehow?

That would take us to March 2021 and then we can pretend 2020 never existed.

Up for it? Thoughts?

Looking forward to it! All usual suspects and newcomers welcome.

Ok I'm going to try this, although I have a few major life upheavals planned for the next 8+ months (sell house, emigrate...) so not sure if I'll make it through to March! Shock

I read some Dickens as a teen, but none I think for the last 20-odd years, and never OMF. I've downloaded a free version to my Kindle - I don't get on with fiction on Audible.

Piggywaspushed · 05/08/2020 15:02

You are very welcome!

I’ve just ordered my copy from eBay. I’ve not read this before and I know nothing about the story, so I’m looking forward to it.

Piggywaspushed · 05/08/2020 15:26

It's one I know nothing about to , although I always thought the tile sounded more 'modern'. I am looking forward to reading a book that everyone else doesn't claim say they've read.

Welcome new joiners. I know nothing about OMF either.

I disliked Dickens for a long time, then had a run which I really enjoyed and came round to him so interested to see what I make of this one now.

SatsukiKusakabe · 05/08/2020 16:46

I have a free Kindle copy as well as the paperback so will see what’s easier (awful eyesight so like being able to size up text on the Kindle.)

I really struggle with Audiobooks for fiction. Don’t know why but can’t seem to take it in, whereas non fiction is fine.

labyrinthloafer · 05/08/2020 16:49

I'm very interested but scared I won't have time so will just place mark for now

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 05/08/2020 17:38

Having listened to the various Audible options I think I may go with Simon Vance (narrated mantel's Bring Up The Bodies beautifully) The Merra Syal version does sound a little over wrought, and as Alice said mixed reviews.

mackerella · 05/08/2020 18:09

Count me in!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 05/08/2020 18:24

I have started with the Syal Audible and Kindle I don't find her OTT at all.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 06/08/2020 23:13

Ok, so I am on Chapter 5 and Meera Syal's narration has gone from "charming" to "stop with the overdoing the accents please"

Piggywaspushed · 06/08/2020 23:15

Oh dear!

OP posts:
ThreeImaginaryBoys · 06/08/2020 23:30

Can I join in?

PerkingFaintly · 06/08/2020 23:41

Getting on the thread, as I know OMF quite well.

I probably won't be well enough to re-read all through, but it will be absolutely lovely to enjoy vicariously through everyone else's comments.

(Someone mentioned adaptations: there's a very enjoyable 1998 one with Anna Friel, Steve Mackintosh, Keeley Hawes and Paul McGann.)

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 07/08/2020 01:18

Hi Perking, I mentioned adaptations but I was mistaken in thinking I'd seen one because I'm onto chapter nine of the novel and absolutely nothing feels familiar. I'll definitely watch the 1998 miniseries when I've finished reading the book though, sounds like a good cast.
Anyone else thinking that some of these early chapters feel like a Dickens parody?
So far so good with the Simon Vance narration but I'm also reading chapter summaries online to ensure I keep all the characters straight in my head.

Piggywaspushed · 07/08/2020 06:42

I know what you mean there but it was his last full novel, wasn't it? So I guess he had reached peak Dickens! I quite like the mystery element but find some of the chap 2 stuff a bit Thackerayish. They'd fallen out by now so he is probably cursing me from his grave !

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 07/08/2020 06:42

Of course you may join three : welcome to one and all !

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 07/08/2020 06:43

I like Paul Mc Gann...not necessarily for his acting....

OP posts:
Terpsichore · 07/08/2020 08:34

Gosh, you lot are keen! I haven't even started it yet and Eine's on Chap 5 already Shock

Piggywaspushed · 07/08/2020 08:53

I've only done two chaps and won't read more til next week probably! Don't panic!

OP posts:
FortunaMajor · 07/08/2020 10:01

Don't panic Terpsichore you can join me in the 'doing your homework on the school bus' club.

Des I am most upset to hear there is a Simon Vance version when I've already got a different one. I'd much prefer him.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 07/08/2020 10:20

Audio takes about an hour a chapter so I knew I had to get going. Not really "in" yet

Terpsichore · 07/08/2020 10:26

OK, I've calmed down a bit Grin. You've prompted me to find the book which is good. Might start it later though, I've got some time this afternoon.

BadSpellaSpellaSpella · 07/08/2020 10:44

I'm in. I got very behind on the David Copperfield readalong so still have abit 100 pages if that to finish but have always wanted to read OMF

AliceinBunnyland · 07/08/2020 11:47

I have only just ordered mine, so...

I decided not to order the audiobook as I've seen there seem to be lots of characters so it might be easier if I can refer back in a hard copy book... plus it was about £2
