Our Mutual Friend Readalong

As discussed on the previous Davis Copperfield Readalong, I hope some of us are eager to start Our Mutual Friend!

This is quite a complex one to break up. As usual, Dickens published in 19 monthly instalments but this one has 4 'Books' .

It is split up as follows:

BOOK THE FIRST: THE CUP AND THE LIP
I – May 1864 (chapters 1–4);
II – June 1864 (chapters 5–7);
III – July 1864 (chapters 8–10);
IV – August 1864 (chapters 11–13);
V – September 1864 (chapters 14–17).
BOOK THE SECOND: BIRDS OF A FEATHER
VI – October 1864 (chapters 1–3);
VII – November 1864 (chapters 4–6);
VIII – December 1864 (chapters 7–10);
IX – January 1865 (chapters 11–13);
X – February 1865 (chapters 14–16).
BOOK THE THIRD: A LONG LANE
XI – March 1865 (chapters 1–4);
XII – April 1865 (chapters 5–7);
XIII – May 1865 (chapters 8–10);
XIV – June 1865 (chapters 11–14);
XV – July 1865 (chapters 15–17).
BOOK THE FOURTH: A TURNING
XVI – August 1865 (chapters 1–4);
XVII – September 1865 (chapters 5–7);
XVIII – October 1865 (chapters 8–11);
XIX-XX – November 1865 [chapters 12–17 (Chapter the Last)].

4 instalments is feasible but might be too much for those of us working/ reading other books/child or DP wrangling/ insert other reason.

Therefore, I would suggest 8 instalments, splitting each book in two somehow?

That would take us to March 2021 and then we can pretend 2020 never existed.

Up for it? Thoughts?

Looking forward to it! All usual suspects and newcomers welcome.

I agree, and I think it shows that this written by a much more mature and experienced author than Great Expectations.

I love Lizzie's responses to Headstone's proposal:

'"Mr Headstone,' returned Lizzie, with a burning face, 'it is cowardly in you to speak to me in this way. But it makes me able to tell you that I do not like you, and that I never have liked you from the first, and that no other living creature”
has anything to do with the effect you have produced upon me for yourself.'”

I think many a poster on the relationships board could take a leaf out of her book.

Piggywaspushed · 03/01/2021 10:31

Ha, yes, let's send Lizzie over there!

I enjoyed the 10 chapters we read this month, once again finding it difficult to stop reading.

As recommended I made some notes whilst I was reading:

Sorry to disagree with Chessie but:
Chapter 8: Dickens at his worst! The death of Betty Higden is overly sentimental, mawkish and drawn out. Also relies upon the ridiculous coincidence of Lizzie Hexam finding the dying woman. So many of Dickens plots are overly reliant on coincidence for their impetus.
Reminded me of the Oscar Wilde quote:
‘One would have to have a heart of stone not to laugh at the death of Little Nell’

Did anyone else notice that The Deputy Lock who robbed Betty of her last few counts under the pretext of not shipping her off to the poor house was none other than our old friend Riderhood? He told Bradley Headstone of his temporary post earlier in the book.
‘And it chanced so with me,' said Riderhood. 'But I don't mind telling you how. Why should I mind telling you? I'm a Deputy Lock-keeper up the river, and I was off duty yes'day, and I shall be on to-morrow.'
He also made mention of an 'Alfred David' during his conversation with Betty which was what turned me detective.
Maybe this was blindingly obvious to everyone else but I felt absurdly pleased with myself at spotting the link!

Eugene Wrayburn is very flippant in his tormenting of Bradley Headstone. Lots of foreshadowing of a tragic event going on there me things. Lightwater can’t sleep for thinking about BH’s dreadful face where as EW is bothered not a jot.

The redemption of Bella W continues apace, what good fortune that her character will soon mirror her countenance for loveliness!

Mrs Lammales Damescen conversion takes an abrupt downturn when are espies that Bella is seemingly as mercenary as herself.

Venus a goodie suddenly?

Piggywaspushed · 04/01/2021 15:50

I am v confused as to who Venus is , have to say! Blush

Excellent summary and -no - I did not notice Riderhood! Blush again

The Betty death was quite mawkish but I did think it was tempered with some genuine political anger.

ChessieFL · 04/01/2021 17:00

I also didn’t notice Riderhood!

I agree that Betty dying in Lizzie’s garden was a bit too coincidental but I still found it sad!

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 04/01/2021 18:02

Venus is the guy who owns the weird shop and is in league with Wegg to steal from Boffin and he's is also in love with Pleasant Riderhood, but she has rejected him. Although that musing about him being a 'Goody' more properly belongs to January's chapters Blush which I'm just about to finish - I'm always super keen!
Sorry that I'm so hard hearted about poor Betty but her reason for taking off to roam the streets without money seemed so ridiculous, wasn't it so that Sloppy would settle down with the Boffins (or did I get that wrong?) - surely there were less extreme ways of achieving that aim? It all seemed so preventable.

Piggywaspushed · 04/01/2021 18:29

Oh, thanks : all I got about Venus and Wegg was a load of rolling about somewhere with a box??

That's some impressive forensic reading there Des. Cracking spot.

A lot of stuff goes straight over my head as I seem to spend ages trying to remember who was who. I struggle reading with such big gaps between, which is completely my own fault.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 04/01/2021 20:31

Thank you Fortuna Grin 😇

@ChessieFL

I also didn’t notice Riderhood!

I agree that Betty dying in Lizzie’s garden was a bit too coincidental but I still found it sad!

While I've read all the novels at least once-bar Two Cities-I've only been an interested onlooker with this and the Expectations thread, and I've been enjoying it.

Has the unfinished (and endingless) murder mystery Edwin Drood been tackled yet? Now that would be interesting!

The comment about coincidence had me searching for what I thought was a Dickens quote:

The most incredible thing about miracles is that they happen. A few clouds in heaven do come together into the staring shape of one human eye. A tree does stand up in the landscape of a doubtful journey in the exact and elaborate shape of a note of interrogation. I have seen both these things myself within the last few days. Nelson does die in the instant of victory; and a man named Williams does quite accidentally murder a man named Williamson; it sounds like a sort of infanticide. In short, there is in life an element of elfin coincidence.

but turns out to be by Chesterton, who was a fan of CD.

Piggywaspushed · 05/01/2021 21:29

Just to confirm, we are reading to the end of Book the third in January!

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 07/01/2021 18:00

Oops, the conversation between Bradley Headstone and Riderhood re being a 'Deputy Lock' takes place in Book 3 Chapter 11, I just didn't stop listening where I should have done obviously Blush

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2021 19:38

Scandalous!! I shall take away your Star

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 07/01/2021 23:50

Sorry Miss 😔

ChessieFL · 08/01/2021 05:26

No wonder I had missed it!!

FortunaMajor · 08/01/2021 06:27

Chessie Grin

Des I think the fact that none of us realised it wasn't familiar tells you everything you need to know. Grin

I'd have still missed it even if you hadn't said anything. I also get carried away when listening and it's easy to do an extra chapter without realising.

ChessieFL · 08/01/2021 08:52

Yes, I really wouldn’t have been surprised if a whole chapter was described that I had read but recalled nothing about. There are so many characters and stories to keep track of! I’m sure I’m not reading carefully enough and am missing important points. I really should start making notes about each chapter as I’m going along.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 10/01/2021 09:14

Well I've now caught up the end of December (and concur with @DesdamonasHandkerchief's excellent notes).

As an aside, it is very pleasing to see Desdemona nicknamed Des. It would have lightened the atmosphere in Venice a bit, wouldn't it?

Piggywaspushed · 10/01/2021 09:54

I used to teach Othello quite a lot and we all used to call her Des. I had to tell the students not to write it in essays though!!

I'll answer to anything Smile And thanks for not telling me off for the spoiler!

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 12/01/2021 17:27

Finished my chapters ages ago and I have soooo many notes, also managed to stop reading at the required point this month, although I can't promise not to read the whole of Book 4 in February!
I'm definitely the school swot on this thread.
(Pity I'm in the slow readers corner on the 50 book thread Blush)

Piggywaspushed · 12/01/2021 17:32

Oh I am bad at both...

I've done one book on the 50 Books Smile

Way behind everyone else here but am really enjoying OMF so far. First 10 chapters read and I feel like I'm engaging much more with this than BH or DC. Was confused, like others, about Twemlow initially and only realised he was an actual person after I !ooked up a character list online!

Piggywaspushed · 18/01/2021 15:58

Good old Twemlow!

Not a spoiler to say he hasn't appeared for about my last 150 pages and I only just noticed now you mention him!

Bumping this in preparation for tomorrow!

I have one chapter to go and I need someone to help me with some context tomorrow!
