Our Mutual Friend Readalong

As discussed on the previous Davis Copperfield Readalong, I hope some of us are eager to start Our Mutual Friend!

This is quite a complex one to break up. As usual, Dickens published in 19 monthly instalments but this one has 4 'Books' .

It is split up as follows:

BOOK THE FIRST: THE CUP AND THE LIP
I – May 1864 (chapters 1–4);
II – June 1864 (chapters 5–7);
III – July 1864 (chapters 8–10);
IV – August 1864 (chapters 11–13);
V – September 1864 (chapters 14–17).
BOOK THE SECOND: BIRDS OF A FEATHER
VI – October 1864 (chapters 1–3);
VII – November 1864 (chapters 4–6);
VIII – December 1864 (chapters 7–10);
IX – January 1865 (chapters 11–13);
X – February 1865 (chapters 14–16).
BOOK THE THIRD: A LONG LANE
XI – March 1865 (chapters 1–4);
XII – April 1865 (chapters 5–7);
XIII – May 1865 (chapters 8–10);
XIV – June 1865 (chapters 11–14);
XV – July 1865 (chapters 15–17).
BOOK THE FOURTH: A TURNING
XVI – August 1865 (chapters 1–4);
XVII – September 1865 (chapters 5–7);
XVIII – October 1865 (chapters 8–11);
XIX-XX – November 1865 [chapters 12–17 (Chapter the Last)].

4 instalments is feasible but might be too much for those of us working/ reading other books/child or DP wrangling/ insert other reason.

Therefore, I would suggest 8 instalments, splitting each book in two somehow?

That would take us to March 2021 and then we can pretend 2020 never existed.

Up for it? Thoughts?

Looking forward to it! All usual suspects and newcomers welcome.

Fortuna if you bought via Audible you can return your version and repurchase the Simon Vance one no problem at all, their customer service is second to none.

SatsukiKusakabe · 07/08/2020 12:05

Yes do return - they encourage it in audible and it’s sort of part what you’re paying your subscription for.

terpsichore I’m on the bus with you and fortuna.

Indigosalt · 07/08/2020 12:18

I also need to get a move on. I'm definitely making a start this evening!

HarlanWillYouStopNamingNuts · 07/08/2020 13:28

OMG (or should that be OMF?), you lot have started already! I have three books on the go so the goal for this weekend is to finish one of those and start OMF.

ChessieFL · 07/08/2020 15:01

I haven’t started yet and probably won’t for a few days as there’s a few other things I plan to finish first.

KeithLeMonde · 07/08/2020 16:31

I'm going to take a break from Dickens so will skip this one but see you all in April 2021 (!!) for the next one.

Piggywaspushed · 07/08/2020 17:17

I shsll miss your facts, keith !

I'd like to join in if that's alright? Downloaded it this afternoon and intrigued to see how I find it. Decades ago (eep) I enjoyed Barnaby Rudge but didn't enjoy David Copperfield, so it could go either way!

Nuffaluff · 17/08/2020 22:02

My copy has arrived - woo hoo.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 17/08/2020 23:53

Struggling tbf. Returned the Syal as I wasn't getting on with it and though I have read 1-6, I don't have a lot of desire to get back. Will keep trying.

ChessieFL · 20/08/2020 08:50

I haven’t started yet, but I’m on holiday next week so plenty of time to catch up.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 22/08/2020 19:39

So I have read the first 10 now

I really have zero idea of what is going on in this book Grin

SatsukiKusakabe · 23/08/2020 08:04

I have made a beginning, just checking in because I fell off the thread!

BadSpellaSpellaSpella · 23/08/2020 12:52

Im glad im not the only one that's struggling to understand what's going in. Im reading it along side a synopsis which helps

Piggywaspushed · 23/08/2020 22:05

I had to read some chapter summaries today : it is not as immediately readable as DC but I do quite like the murder intrigue.

It's thus usual too many characters issue with added pseudonyms.

I haven’t started the actual book yet, but my copy has an introduction by Nick Hornby which I read last night. It describes OMF as probably Dickens’ worst book which doesn’t exactly inspire confidence!

Nuffaluff · 24/08/2020 08:30

I’ve read the first two chapters. I’m not too worried about remembering who all the characters at the dinner party are, because I’m sensing that the dinner party is a device for introducing the main story via gossip and that these characters don’t matter much.
I hope?

Nuffaluff · 24/08/2020 08:31

Anyway, I’m also finishing ‘The Waves’ by Virginia Woolf at the moment, so this feels like a holiday in comparison!

Nuffaluff · 24/08/2020 08:33

Having said that, at one point I was confused about whether this Twemlo guy - or whatever his name is - is a man or a table.

Terpsichore · 24/08/2020 08:42

Saying it's his worst book is quite a sweeping statement for Nick Hornsby to make Hmm

It's years since I last read it but I've almost finished the 10 chapters and I'm remembering all over again why I loved it so much. Take that, Nick Hornby!

Terpsichore · 24/08/2020 08:43

Hornby - autocorrect thinks it knows how to spell his name but it doesn't Angry

nowanearlyNicemum · 24/08/2020 10:14

Haven't managed to get my hands on a copy yet. Will try harder!!

Piggywaspushed · 24/08/2020 10:32

Was he a man? I genuinely thought Dickens was personifying a table...

HarlanWillYouStopNamingNuts · 24/08/2020 10:34

I'm really enjoying this. I was almost derailed by the dinner party chapter but decided to disregard it and I think that was the right decision. Currently teading about Silas Wegg's first visit to the Boffins. As a PP said, I have no idea where this is all leading but I'm enjoying it in the moment.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/08/2020 11:35

Twemlow, it's about his proximity to the hosts and the further down the table he goes the more guests they have because they extend the table

No credit to be given to me, had to google!
