What is your first book for 2019?

And if you've already started reading it, do you like it?
Mine is "Sofia Khan is Not Obliged", which is like Bridget Jones from the perspective of a Pakistani Muslim. Am loving it as it is so interesting to learn about the dating rules and there is a lot of humour. Only very minor thing about it that I dislike is that the time stamps do not always match the events, because she will write abbut them after they happen so it just makes it a little confusing.
Would love to know what everyone else is starting.

I am steadying The Hearts Invisible Furies, by John Boone, as recommended on MN. I found it in the library.
I’ve just finished Our House by Louise Candlish. Well worth a read, and lives up to the hype on the cover for me at least. I was intrigued to see how it would all play out.

I’m reading Science(ish) and loving it.

My first book is A Scandalous Life it’s a biography of Jane Digby by Mary Lovell. I’m quite enjoying it.

Just deciding between a few random kindle books I have for bedtime as DH moans about having light/lamp on. Currently deciding between books called Polly’s Pride, Sentence of Marriage and Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes.

I finished The Labyrinth of Spirits over Christmas and then immediately wanted to re-read the others so have just finished those. Got The Quran for Christmas ( I did ask for it) so starting that soon. Looking forward to some stuff coming out later this year, new Joanne Harris Vianne Rocher book, The Strawberry Thief, comes out in April, may have to plan a long weekend in the caravan for that one!

Ma'am Darling: 99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret by Craig Brown. Brilliant, hilarious and extremely interesting. Am about half way through and highly recommend!

Just finished Conversations with friends by Sally Rooney. Really enjoyed it. Loved her latest Normal People which was nominated for the Booker prize. This was her first book.

I want to read those Sally Rooney’s.
My first is The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton. Won the Booker prize a couple of years back.
It’s not blowing me away at the moment. I’m finding it slightly boring, tbh. Not my thing. A lot of talking in long paragraphs and many dull characters. Also, I’m not keen on the theme of gold prospecting. Don’t ask me why - I don’t know! Maybe it’s because I read The Colour by Rose Tremaine and I didn’t like that either.
Only 125 pages in. 675 to go. Maybe it will get better for me. I must be wrong because it won the Booker.

The woman in the window, I had no idea the main character had anxiety/agoraphobia but I can relate to both so thoroughly enjoying it. That sounds a bit weird but the author seems to have done her research and describes the sensations of both perfectly.

I gave up on The Luminaries Nuff. A kiwi relative bought it for me so I felt I should read it, but I couldn't get on with it at all.

I've just started Normal People. Really enjoying it so far.

Oh God, private it’s hard going isn’t it? A friend of mine gave up on it too.
I read a lot of prize winning type fiction normally, so I feel bad if I don’t like it. Another one is Possession by AS Byatt. I’ve tried to read that twice! (Might try again this year - judging by the blurb I should love it). Also hated Milkman. Shameful.

I just start Before the Fall by Noah Hawley. No idea yet if l will like it.

I'm reading Transcription by Kate Atkinson, really enjoying it so far but then I expected to as she is a brilliant writer and I've loved everything else I've read by her.

I'm reading The Way of All Flesh, a thriller set in 1850s Edinburgh. It's bloody brilliant.

I have just started The Favoured Child by Philippa Gregory. Sequel to Wideacre, which I read a long time ago so hope I can remember the stuff I need to remember!

I picked up Watching You by Lisa Jewell on NYE, and finished it this afternoon; I really enjoyed it.

Love is Blind by William Boyd. Very readable.

I have Transcription waiting at the library for me. Looking forward to that.
