Today has been the worst day. Please recommend me a book that is funny and light hearted. I have just looked in my to read pile and they are all heavy psychological thrillers. Thanks!

The Tent, The Bucket and Me by Emma Kennedy

Driving Over Lemons by Chris Stewart

Moab is my Washpot by Stephen Fry

The Hearts Invisible Furies by John Boyne

Good Omens - Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett

I second The Tent, The bucket & me.

The long way to a small angry planet by Becky Chambers is my favourite recent read.

Standard Deviation by Katherine Heiny. Funny, wise and shrewd. But especially funny.

Thanks! I'm off to Waterstones today and will take a look at these.

A Year in Provence... yes, it's old but if you haven't read it, it is so funny. I was the nutter giggling on the train (for several hours).

The ‘44 Scotland Street’ series by Alexander McCall Smith. If you like the first book you will enjoy the others and have about 10 more to read.

Where'd you go Bernadette? By Maria Semple. My favourite epistolary novel!

Chelsea26 · 11/10/2018 22:05

‘Round Ireland with a fridge or any bill bryson

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 11/10/2018 22:07

1066 and All That makes me laugh like a drain but only really works if you have a vague idea of British history and a tolerance for imperialist attitudes (which I do, while also knowing that makes me a Bad Thing).

Eleanor Oliphant made me laugh out loud in places

thetigerthatcamefortea · 11/10/2018 22:09

Also Eleanor oliphant. Best book I have read in ages.
Made me cry in places but also made me howl with laughing. It will stay with me for a long time

Charley50 · 11/10/2018 22:55

This is going to hurt. (Unless you're squeamish). Funny, yet poignant.

Orangesandlemons82 · 11/10/2018 22:56

Wow, thanks everyone, have just come back to the thread and seen loads more fab recommendations.
