Most Margaret Atwood books, but especially Alias Grace, The Blind Assassin and the Oryx and Crake Trilogy.
Brooklyn by Colm Tobin - short, simple, beautiful.
Most Barbara Kingsolver books.
Tully by Paulina Simmons
A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
I also love Marian Keys - I think she is really funny and weaves a cracking tale.
Stephen King - always reliable for a good story. The Stand is epic.

The Secret History
A Fine Balance
Shantaram
A Little Life
A Quiet Belief in Angels
The Goldfinch
A Million Little Pieces
The God of Small Things
The Northern Lights trilogy
Tokyo

I read a lot of fairly standard murder / thrillers but they just don't seem to stick with me in the same way as the books I've listed above, most of which I've read more than once.

carbuncle I too love Asta's Book! I had forgotten it until you mentioned it!

Sadly, the later Barbara Vine stuff declined, I think.
