Not my number one book ever, but I just read The Bees by Laline Paull and I really enjoyed it. A bit sci-fi but not too far stretched.

Brideshead Revisited would be my desert island book.

If Gone Girl is your absolute number 1 book of all time, you need to read more.

A Little Life by Hanya Yanigahara

It’s probably not my favorite ever EVER but it is the best and most memorable book I’ve read in recent years.

The secret history.... first read it in 1995 when I was 15. I've read it so many times since that my copy is looking very tired. The perfect novel.

My close favourite is 'the night circus ' which is simply breathtakingly magical.
