Can anyone recommend any good ghost stories?

The Woman in Black

M.R James short stories are chilling.

Susan Hill springs immediately to mind.

The Woman In Black has already been mentioned, but I would also recommend The Man In The Picture, The Mist In The Mirror and The Small Hand.

A Season to Remember, by Sheila O'Flanagan, has a brilliant chapter about a ghost.

Haunted by James Herbert

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

Fellside by MR Carey.

Shani Struthers writes the psychic survey books, very good stories about 'grounded ghosts' they want to 'move on' Quite spooky and quite unsettling at times. Can recommend them.

The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley. Also try Robert Aickman’s short stories. Weird and unsettling.

The only horror book I've read is 4 The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and really freaked me out. I only watch horror movies now.

The Secret of Crickley Hall, by James Herbert, is a fantastic book; the TV adaptation was disappointing.

Tiger! Finally I’ve found somebody else who has heard of and likes Cold Christmas! Probably my favourite childhood book!

Yes, Cold Christmas deserves to be much more renowned. I read it at least twice in 1985, when I was 11. I must have eventually cleared out my original copy (amongst those given to a school fair, or something); but I now have another copy, which I got from Amazon or Ebay, a few years ago.

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver genuinely creeped me out, really recommend it.

Another vote for M. R. James. No one has ever written more chilling and terrifying tales, even all these years later.

Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951) wrote some fine creepy ghost stories.

H P Lovecraft for weird stories.

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver is one of the few genuinely terrifying books I've ever read.

Cold Earth by Sarah Moss is an interesting counterpoint to Dark Matter, as it deals with the weirdness of an nightless arctic summer rather than a lightless arctic winter.

I loved The Woman in Black.

Winter Ghosts by Kate Mosse is good too.

The Silent Companion’s by Laura Purcell is really good. Ive just finished it and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Bag of Bones by Stephen King was really good. It was also adapted as a mini series where Pierce Brosnan played the lead (I was very worried, I’m not a fan - then he went and surprised me by being brilliant in the role)!

Loved The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters and also Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffeneger.
