I'm reading A slow passion-snails, my garden and me. It's non fiction, written by Ruth Brooks and describes her involvement in a citizen science project. I'm really enjoying it.Despite my massive 'to read' pile I'm wondering what others are reading at the moment!

Audible people - there is a buy 3 books get a £10 voucher offer on. I did this a while ago & was hoping for another. I'm off on holiday next week so good timing.

Although I have a subscription, the £10 voucher is good for spending on the daily deals which are usually £2-£3, can be great offerings & feels like a real treat ;)

A LITTLE LIFE
Agree with both sides - I think the reason I'll never forget this book (I seem to forget what's happened in a lot of other things I've read in recent years!) is that I have all kinds of rage - against Jude for not being happier when he gets this amazing life & friends that constantly put him first, against the author for putting him through so much and against her for not showing us more of 'courtroom Jude' who is a total badass & beyond competent - we're just supposed to believe that about him without hearing anything of that side of his character. An extra 5 pages to give at least one example wouldn't go amiss surely?! And rage in a way that his friends didn't push him a little more to share. Rage that poor Harold was left shouldering a lot of the burden of sadness & that Julia didn't make that much of an effort really-that annoyed me. Maybe there was a point about women not being in any way strong characters in this book but I didn't feel it was true to her character having been a mother to basically be a supporting actress. There were other things that annoyed me too but I can't remember them now! I could talk about it for days!

The Power by Naomi Alderman. It's fantastic and unsettling and I will start a thread on it when I've finished it to avoid spoilers

Liketoshop · 05/06/2017 20:00

I'm reading Paula Hawkins Into The Water. I'm a fairly slow reader but this sends me to sleep and isn't very knicker gripping. Just a two book publishers deal

myusernameisnotmyusername · 05/06/2017 20:17

I've just finished a brilliant collection of short stories by Mark Haddon, titled The Pier Falls. Highly recommend. And am now reading The One Plus One by Jojo Moyes. It's really good, an easy read but just what I wanted after some deeper reads recently!

Mumchance · 05/06/2017 20:29

Murine, sorry, I only saw your post just now. I think absolutely CT's House of Names would be enjoyable for someone who didn't know the stories of Orestes, Clytemnestra, Electra and co and he plays around with some of the stories and characters, anyway. It's violent, atavistic powerful royal family in-fighting against the background of he Trojan war. A teenage girl is sacrificed by her father to get a good wind for his navy to get to sea In the first chapter, for instance.

fleshmarketclose · 05/06/2017 20:36

I'm making my way through Harlan Coben's books. I read "Missing You" and "Tell No One" over the bank holiday and started "Six Years" this weekend. He's not my favourite author tbh but they are pretty fast paced and easy to read which is what I need at the moment as feeling pretty stressed.

AnneEtAramis · 05/06/2017 20:40

The Year of the Runaways by Sunjeev Sahota. It's for book club but I did own it already and it's been on my (extremely long) list. About 28% through. I like it, some very hard parts as it's about the Indian caste system, Indian politics and immigration. It's very bleak at the moment and I am not sold on the writing.

Will now spend the next hour not reading it but reading this thread :-)

Saucery · 05/06/2017 20:52

His Bloody Project by Graeme Macrae Burnet. Absolutely fascinating account of life in the 1800s in the remote Scottish Highlands and a murder whose protagonist you know, but not why they did it.

cheapskatemum · 05/06/2017 22:26

I'm reading The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver, having read The Poisonwood Bible many years ago and enjoyed it. I saw an exhibition of Frieda Kahlo's work in March, so am looking forward to reading a factional account of a period in her life.

I'm on holiday next week and PPs have reminded me of some authors I have in my TBR pile. I don't think I'll be investing in A Little Life before I go. It doesn't sound like my idea off a holiday read.

To the poster who wanted Margaret Atwood recommendations other than A Handmaid's Tale, my favourite Atwood book is Cat's Eye. It's quasi-autobiographical, so not as sci fi as most of her fiction, but well-written, with interesting characters.

mamaduckbone · 05/06/2017 22:38

The Bees by Laline Paul. It's hard going but I'm determined to persevere. I've started it twice and given up but I'm further in this time and getting into it.

Highmaintenancefemalestuff · 05/06/2017 22:48

I loved the Rachel Abbott books!.
I like psychological thrillers so when I finish a book I just buy one of the recommended books at the end.
Too close is the book I'm reading at the moment and I'm struggling to get into it. It will not defeat me!

IamPaulsMum · 05/06/2017 23:15

I'm reading Stay with Me by Ayobami Adebayo - a very powerful novel which I would think would make every mother weep. Gives an amazing insight into Nigerian society and the tragic moments are offset by some lovely humorous touches. Couldn't put the book down.

WildIrishRose1 · 05/06/2017 23:25

Just started The Book of You, by Clare Kendal. Reminiscent of Into the Darkest Corner, by Elizabeth Haynes. I'm enjoying it so far, but I like psychological thrillers.

Purdypie · 05/06/2017 23:33

I'm just finishing up Fried Green Tomatoes At the Whistle Stop Cafe. Really enjoyed it.
Before that I read A Man Called Ove and I would recommend it to EVERYBODY!!

read the Handmaid's Tale a few years ago and have been watching the series and think it has been done brilliantly!

hellokittymania · 06/06/2017 06:02

I just started reading how dare the sun rise, it's based on the war in the Congo.

RMC123 · 06/06/2017 16:55

Reading Silent Voices, #4 in the Vera series.
Have just read the first three and really enjoying them.
Have to read Housewife 54 by Nella Last next for book club

WildIrishRose1 · 07/06/2017 02:05

Finished The Book of You just now. I enjoyed it, despite always being just that little bit disappointed with the denouement of thrillers in general.

About to start The Handmaid's Tale - read it years ago, so I'm interested to see how much I remember. I was big into Margaret Atwood then - that, or AA Gill's biography.

Saucery · 10/06/2017 19:24

Thank you to whoever recommended Defending Jacob. Finished it today and it was really good. I used to read a lot of legal procedurals but got bored with them and this was a refreshing take on the genre with a heck of a twist at the end.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 12/06/2017 21:37

I'm now reading The Bees. It's a bit weird but I'm hoping it will get better.

clairet144 · 14/06/2017 12:21

Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine by Gail Honeyman - such a lovely book , if you enjoyed The Rosie Effect then you wil lenjoy this one!

Highmaintenancefemalestuff · 14/06/2017 14:25

Downloaded and halfway through the woman in cabin 10 after reading this thread. Struggling to get stuff done as I just want to read this book!

Wildernesstips · 18/06/2017 21:45

Reading Canada by Richard Ford - seems interesting but only two chapters in. Just finished Year of the Runaways which was really good.

Listening to Burmese Days by George Orwell - it's not really doing it for me yet.

katsnmouse · 19/06/2017 18:48

Started in on Kate Atkinson's a god in ruins- been a while since I read life after life so it has taken some time to remember who is who again. I'm starting to quite enjoy it.

I've just finished Into the Water. Thought it was crap.

I'm reading American Gods - Neil Gaiman. Gripped so far. I saw the advert for the series on Amazon Prime and I thought it looked interesting so I ordered the book to read first. Adaptations usually aren't as good.

Clalpolly · 23/06/2017 11:56

Prussian Blue - Philip Kerr . Need to unwind with a familiar voice and I'm saving the latest Sara Paretsky for my hols.
