I'm at the end of a run of brilliant books and looking for something else gripping enough to make me put down my phone, turn off Netflix and go to bed to read.

I don't want anything sad or sci fi or too trashy but would appreciate any really good suggestions!

Thank you!

There is a crime series by M J Arlidge that I have just finished (7 books in all I think) that I have really enjoyed and genuinely hadn't guessed any of the twists in the books. The first on is called Eeny Meeny if you are interested.

thekingfisher · 19/04/2017 20:02

thanks for the recommendation - i have read a few of that series but hadn't go the rest so just downloaded!

Thank you so much SmokingGun - I shall look that up.

After I posted this I did some stalking of other similar posts and ended up ordering this from Amazon, Gilead by Marilynne someone.

www.amazon.co.uk/Gilead-Marilynne-Robinson/dp/1844081486/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492628646&sr=8-1&keywords=gilead+marilynne+robinson&tag=mumsnetforum-21

Rather looking forward to it

Black widow by Chris Brookmyre. An excellent whodunnit and not too grisly. Dh and I have both just really enjoyed it.

hashtagcurious · 20/04/2017 14:16

mugglebumthesecond · 21/04/2017 18:19

Matilda2013 · 21/04/2017 19:51

Disclaimer by Renee Knight has been a hit with everyone in my office. I also read Daisy in Chains by Sharon Bolton recently and thoroughly enjoyed that.

iloveredwine · 23/04/2017 17:54

The girls by Lisa Jewell is brilliant

greenlavender · 24/04/2017 20:44

Try some more of Liane Moriaty. She has written some great books.

user1493018337 · 25/04/2017 06:14

I just started reading Big Little Lies.

MimsyBorogroves · 25/04/2017 18:47

More Liane Moriarty. I enjoyed all of them, but Three Wishes and The Last Anniversary weren't quite as good as the rest for me.

saltedcaramelhotchoc · 25/04/2017 18:57

Alex Marwood, the Darkest Secret, is excellent, even if notably ripped off a major news event...

WandaOver · 27/04/2017 16:38

I agree The Last Anniversary was a bit of a dud but loved the others by Liane Moriarty.
I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh explores similar themes to Big Little Lies.

MissCalamity · 27/04/2017 18:52

I second MJ Arlidge & Sharon Bolton. I've just read a book by Rachel Abbot called The Back Road which was really good (so I've checked out all her other books of course!)
Paula Daly - The Trophy Child is also quite good!

SmokingGun · 01/05/2017 14:54

Back with another recommendation! Escape by C.L Taylor. I've just finished it and loved it, was very fast paced from the first chapter which I enjoyed as a moly of other psychological thrillers are slow burners.

SmokingGun · 01/05/2017 14:55

MissCalamity - I love both Rachel Abbott and Paula Daly, Mel Sharrat is a similar author if you haven't read any of her stuff already?

MissCalamity · 01/05/2017 18:54

Thanks for the tip smokinggun never heard of Mel Sharrat before, are her books in a series or stand alone ones?

BikeRunSki · 01/05/2017 19:02

I couldn't put down The Light Between Oceans - ML Stedman

WhiteWinterWitch · 01/05/2017 19:08

The Poison Tree by Erin Kelly is quite good, also behind closed doors by BA Paris

BuzzKillington · 01/05/2017 19:15

Is Big Little Lies good? I am reading The Husband's Secret by the same author, but have only just started it.

I have just finished Lie With Me by Sabine Durrant which I enjoyed.

I will admit that I found The girls by Lisa Jewell a big pile of shite. I downloaded it by accident. What I meant to download was The Girls by Emma Cline which was brilliant.
