I've brought it my brother for christmas and have been informed i cant give it him as he will hate it. He is a staunch christian and apparently he will find it very offensive and send him nutty. Is this true?

popsycal · 22/11/2004 12:51

er...dont give it to him FF....

Roobie · 22/11/2004 13:14

Fairyfly - your brother may enjoy it just as a bit of thriller/mystery. I am a Catholic (practising) and still enjoyed it even though the 'conclusions' and 'facts' presented (or theory/hypothesis/conjecture presented as facts) were downright ludicrous. There is certainly nothing in it that he should feel threatened or angered by - it is just one silly man's imagination running riot.

CountessDracula · 22/11/2004 13:18

Well I think the same could be said of all novels really! Why he should be construed as "silly" I am not quite sure - these "facts" were only presented as facts within the context of a novel, not as reportage.

fairyfly · 22/11/2004 13:19

Thanks Roobie, he is a bit of a delicate little soul though and his imagination runs riot also. Im going to read it first. Thanks for the advice though and glad you enjoyed it. Well done for being a practising catholic also, never quite managed that myself

Roobie · 22/11/2004 13:26

Sorry CD - probably inappropriate description - just letting my own prejudices come through a bit! (I did think it was a cracking read though). You know what it's like when someone tries to be all clever and 'debunk' things you believe in though . The problem is there are people out there who might actually believe the scenarios he presents and take them as genuine fact - oh well maybe it isn't actually a problem...I guess people can take their beliefs from where they choose!

Roobie · 22/11/2004 13:27

Fairyfly - it's not easy being one, believe me!!!

CountessDracula · 22/11/2004 13:32

Oh yes I do know Roobie I do think that the people who take novels as fact are probably the same ones who punch soap stars when they are out shopping for actions committed by their characters - they need to get a grip on reality!

FF I agree btw, don't give it to him if he is likely to be upset by it!

hunkermunker · 22/11/2004 13:35

I'm just about to finish it - think it's a fantastic book! Certainly makes me see a lot of Da Vinci's work in a different light!

Roobie · 22/11/2004 13:39

This is cool game to waste a few hours over (with the help of Google)
da vinci code game

fairyfly · 22/11/2004 13:40

Well mia should leave sonita alone, i'd have a few things to say to her if i bumped into her, shes an evil cow, someone has to stick up for that lovely shop girl

Hes not getting it now anyway i really must read it!

winnie · 11/01/2005 12:06

I have just finished this and came back to read comments here after the event. I was gripped. Clever plot and for once a deserving best seller.
I am interested to read a film is being made of it.

monkey · 11/01/2005 15:19

the book was so predictable, written to look clever but actually not at all, and so obviously written with film production in mind. wasn't impressed. thought it was ok but not deserving of the raves by any means.

sorry

errr..roobie, as the beginning of the book says, all the symbology and theories presented are facts in as much as they are different takes on the early church. holy blood holy grail the book exists too from which a lot of this stuff is taken.

My oh has just read this and was higly interested in the theories.
Especially the divine number thing.

monkey · 12/01/2005 15:53

yes, I did too re checking out the last supper, but just because some bloke a few hundred years ago decided to have a laugh & paint a woman into the scene doesn't mean that
a. there was a woman at the Last Supper (none is mentioned, in fact, it specificaly says the 12 were there, & they are named)
b. The woman was Mary Magdalene
c. Jesus was having it off with Mary Magdalene
d. Mary Magdalene was/is the Holy Grail

None of the ideas in the book were his anyway, which he says. the conspiracy theory has been about a long time, he's just taken this theory & made it into an easy-to-read crimi

doggiewalker · 12/01/2005 16:18

I've enjoyed all of Dan Browns books but I'm no intellectual by any means, I just enjoy a good yarn.

Another good author, who I discovered quite recently is Tess Gerritsen. She writes modern day thrillers. Also Harlan Coben writes a pretty good yarn.

Tinker · 12/01/2005 16:19

I checked out the Last Supper after reading it as well. Great read but some of the clues were very obvious. I think it's all true!!

I've not actually read The Da Vinci code yet - but DH bought me an Illustrated copy for Xmas (never seen an illustrated fiction novel before)had a quick flick through and it's full of gorgeous works of art and old buildings, etc.

Glad that the majority appear to recommend it. Trouble is its so big - I can't read it in bed and need to make time to sit and read it (LOL at mere suggestion of any personal time).

Sorry Freddiecat - tried Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco and absolutely hated it, could not get on with it at all. Actually kept it for 2 years and attempted to read it at various intervals, very tedious.

Roobie · 13/01/2005 13:24

Hausfrau - just seen your message. I've just done the whole thing again to remind myself and must say that each time I have got all the emails back instantaneously. Are you stuck on the first one then?
