Defy Blue Monday by sharing the secrets to your happiness for a chance to win a copy of Lucy Diamond's new novel The Secrets of Happiness plus a fabulous Sheer Bliss Pamper Hamper

What is the secret of happiness? Family? Love? Endless chocolate? Stepsisters Rachel and Becca certainly aren’t experts. They've never been close and seem to live perfectly opposite lives - Rachel has the house, husband and kids, while Becca lurches from one dead-end job and bad date to another. But when Rachel doesn't come home one night, Becca realises that her life isn't as perfect as she'd thought, and when the two stepsisters are thrown together, they discover that happiness, like love, can hide in the least likely of places.

Lucy Diamond is the bestselling author of Summer at Shell Cottage. You can find her on Twitter and Facebook.

This discussion is sponsored by Pan Macmillan and will end on 15 February. We will post the winner on the thread on that date.

So many come to mind but earlier today it was having time to eat together followed by washing up at the sink instead of using the dishwasher - the warmth of the soapy water, the view of the buds/flowers/birds outside and the interaction with the family as we wash/dry/and put the dishes away, that was my first tonic for the week.

I'm happiest when hanging out with my teenage sons. There's never anywhere else I'd rather be or anything else I'd rather be doing. Went swimming today with one, then had a walk and cooked with the other, then the three of us sat in the kitchen, taking it in turns to play songs we love to each other and ended up laughing so much I couldn't breathe. Can't even remember what about. That's a perfect day for me.

I once said "Good Morning" to a lovely old lady that lives nearby and her reply shocked me - she said "Every morning that I open my eyes is a good morning" I have strived to adopt that now and every morning I wake I smile in the mirror and say Good Morning to myself!

asuwere · 25/01/2016 10:47

Seeing my DC playing/laughing makes me happy.

Also waking up first, I love those 5 minutes of complete peace in the morning :)

Cuddles and cups of tea!

PestoSkiissimos · 25/01/2016 11:08

Being appreciative and positive, even when the going is tough.

Making the most of things and getting your kicks where you can.

FeelingSmurfy · 25/01/2016 20:54

Spending time with people who make you happy, even if you are doing something you hate, at least you know you are doing it with people who care for you and want to be there with you. Don't waste your time trying to make other people happy while ignoring the ones who are already there making you happy and being happy with you

FeelingSmurfy · 25/01/2016 20:56

I like the saying - don't miss the silver lining by spending all of your time looking for the gold

helly27 · 25/01/2016 21:01

Learn to be happy with who you are and if you are not change something to maintain being happy

CREATIVZ · 26/01/2016 05:32

Escaping into a good book definitely helps, creative crafts do it for me too Smile I always feel good whenever I make something, especially if it's for someone else, baking my own bread makes me feel good too, can't beat filling the house with the smell of freshly baked bread, failing that there's always chocolate !!

Crochetfanatic · 26/01/2016 09:34

Not to compare. "Comparison is the thief of joy"

Teladi · 26/01/2016 13:46

I've fallen in love with yoga, it really helps me! Along with red wine, cups of tea and a lot of the other things mentioned!

Think and remember the stuff I have, not the stuff I don't have

Haggisfish · 26/01/2016 20:49

Hugs and laughing and being by water for me.

Imnotacelebgetmeouttahere · 27/01/2016 10:29

Happiness is enjoying "now" not "thing will be better when..."

mogloveseggs · 27/01/2016 13:52

Appreciate what you have.

funkyfish586 · 27/01/2016 17:18

To try and not get bogged down by the little things. Thinking positively is the best thing to do.

Emmad1977 · 27/01/2016 22:41

My secret to happiness is to think about the day ahead as soon as I wake up. Even if I have a stressful work day in front of me, I focus on a part of my day which I'll be looking forward to the most. It could be reading stories with my children before bed, watching a favourite tv programme, picking my children up from school and chatting about their day or reading a good book. It doesn't matter what the day throws at me, I can focus on having something positive at some point which I know will make me happy.

ItsSoooFluffy · 28/01/2016 17:15

Chocolate, a good book and of course my little family Smile

stewaris · 29/01/2016 09:23

A good book, the wood burning stove pumping out heat and miserable weather outside. Always makes me happy to be home and cosy.

yatota74 · 01/02/2016 11:29

My family and lots of little things in life. The smell of coffee in the morning

jacknutter · 01/02/2016 21:00

chocolate
