I wanted an easy to read page turner
It got good reviews
It was the biggest load of crap I have read in a long time
Too far fetched and a terrible ending
Does anyone have any recommendations for a good page turner

I'm so glad someone agrees with me.My friend has suggested several times that I read it. I can't get past the first chapter, its utter rubbish

Cooroo · 28/03/2015 07:48

Film is no better.

poorbuthappy · 28/03/2015 07:48

I also didn't like it and thought I was the only 1!!

EmMcK · 28/03/2015 07:51

It is rubbish!!! Thank god we are not alone in knowing this now

Cooroo · 28/03/2015 07:52

I'd recommend The Cuckoo's Calling by JKRowling writing as Robert Galbraith. Or a book I've never seen mentioned anywhere but I found gripping: Bleak Water by Danuta Reah.

confusedandemployed · 28/03/2015 07:57

Ohh bloody Gone Girl! I agree, total crap. I confess I didn't make it beyond halfway. I just couldn't give a shit whether they found the silly cow or not.
I second The Cuckoo's Calling. Also recommend Elly Griffiths's series about a forensic archaeologist called Dr Ruth Galloway. Also the Simon Serailler series (by Susan Hill). I've just finished the first Department Q book by Jussi Adler-Olsen which was brilliant too.

stillwearingaredribbon · 28/03/2015 08:25

I have read, and enjoyed, the cuckoos calling
I will look at the others, thanks

Second the Jussi Adler_Olson dept q books, read in order starting with Mercy
The m j Aldridge series is good also, eeney meeney is the first
Or the Pierre Lemaitre series, but you need to be very careful that you read them in the correct order, not the publication in uk order. It's part of a trilogy , third one just out. It's really good and a real page Turner, but not for the faint hearted.

Iamfrankieheck · 28/03/2015 14:14

I couldn't understand the rave reviews either Confused had to abandon half way through, it was such mince!
Still have no idea what happened to her but it doesn't keep me awake at night. Was going to watch the film...

hackmum · 28/03/2015 16:09

Those of you who gave up part-way, did you get past the twist? I was also a bit meh about the first few chapters, but the twist changes the way you see everything that's gone before.

FunMitFlags · 28/03/2015 16:15

Read to the end as it was a book group book. I would have given up otherwise. Badly written rubbish IMO.

TheCrowFromBelow · 28/03/2015 16:43

Hated it even after the twist. Everyone was horrible and the plot was awful.
Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie books are excellent.

IndridCold · 28/03/2015 23:45

Yup, I thought so too.

AWholeLottaNosy · 28/03/2015 23:53

I liked Appletree Yard but think
that's a bit Marmite too...

stillwearingaredribbon · 29/03/2015 20:24

I was going to buy the girl on the train but one review compares it to gone girl but not quite as good Hmm
Better give that one a miss

FuckingLiability · 29/03/2015 20:25

Do you know, it's weird. I really disliked the writing style of Gone Girl, but I enjoyed the plot, if that makes sense.

BaconAndAvocado · 29/03/2015 21:31

I loved Gone Girl but felt a bit meh about Appletree Yard.

Will look up,Girl on the Train.

Fierceflora · 29/03/2015 21:35

Oh I loved girl on the train! Agree gone girl was a bit shite and the film was an utter abomination!

KurriKurri · 30/03/2015 00:57

Hated it - started it and gave up then started again on the urging of friends who claimed it was brilliant. Characters were horrible, plot ridiculous, and one of those books that makes you feel cheated at the end (Like Sister by Rosamund Lupton - another load of old cobblers)

Have given up on Appletree Yard - can't get into it at all but might give it another try if I get desperate -I have a long haul flight coming up !! Grin

Hippychickster · 01/04/2015 21:41

I thought Gone Girl was rubbish too. Especially the ending.
Have you read The Book of Human Skin? We read it last year for our book club and everyone loved it!

squoosh · 01/04/2015 21:56

Yep. Utter crap.

cashewnutty · 01/04/2015 22:00

I read it on holiday and enjoyed it. It was an easy read and just what i needed. I also enjoyed the Miniaturist which i know many people hated. The one i struggled with and gave up on was the Luminaries. I just could not get into it at all.

squoosh · 01/04/2015 22:03

I'm reading The Miniaturist at the moment. Enjoying it so far but plenty of time for me to grow to hate it! Grin

OrangeVase · 28/04/2015 13:34

Have just read Gone Girl - and was sooo disappointed. Thought it would be easy and "gripping". Awful
Did quite enjoy the middle section where there was a mystery, a twist and a bit of suspense - but the beginning was tedious and after the "suspense" bit it was dreadful. And the end was ridiculous.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 28/04/2015 22:30

I flipped through it in the bookshop as everyone was raving about it.

Then put it back and bought A Fine Balance....

GG seemed to be utter rubbish.
