Are these not in print anymore? I have just looked them up on Amazon and can only find a few titles (I am sure there was a long series of them when I was a child) from private sellers.

Oh, I am now finding Amazon selling new copies, so I have answered my own question. Does anyone know how many titles there are in the series?

Obviously there is not a shred of interest in this books here so has anyone got any they want to sell?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moomin

Lots of info above

It is on our tv now

DumbledoresGirl · 23/09/2006 17:48

Thanks, I looked up Wikipedia when I got no response here.

Anyone selling?

I used to love the Moomin books, but ds is too young for them still so I don't know much about them now. I only remember about 4 or 5 books, but of course more could have been written since then.

TheBlonde · 23/09/2006 17:56

Sorry not got any of the books

sancerre · 23/09/2006 17:59

Not selling, sorry (love them & am keeping them for when DS is a bit older!) but there's usually some on ebay, in all sorts of conditions, some v cheap iirc.
hth

DumbledoresGirl · 23/09/2006 18:15

Will check that out sancerre. the ones on Amazon were a bit pricey

DG, just in case it helps (don't know if you know your way around the Moomin books, iykwim) Comet in Moominland is a great read, & I think it's one of the first ones (the first one maybe??)...saying that they're all fab of course

DumbledoresGirl · 23/09/2006 18:26

Well, I have done some research into the subject now and have discovered that there are 13 books, 3 of which are only picture books and one of the others (apparently the original) has only recently been published in English. So the accepted first book in english is Comet in Moominland!

Ds2 is having Comet in Moominland read to him by his class teacher right now and really likes it. As he reads virtually nothing despite having a good reading age (he has read the entire Narnia series and little else!) I am hooping to buy the entire Moomin series and give him another 10 books to read.

Oooh, another moomin fan - hooray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Try ebay, there are usually lots on there.

sancerre · 23/09/2006 18:45

Ahh that's lovely DG. How old is he?
I think there's loads of mileage in Moomin books - great for children but plenty on an adult level too (kicks overrated Harry Potter's ass that's for sure!). Hope you get some soon!

(TT ...that reminds me, must get stuck into Summer Book )

DumbledoresGirl · 23/09/2006 19:09

He is 8 but, as I have said, has a good reading ability as he has read (many times) the Narnia books. He just has a peculiar block about reading fiction which he doesn't rate over factual books. I feel he is missing out on so much (as an avid reader myself) so I really want to jump on this new interest and feed it.

Another Moomin fan here, but my children were rather less taken by the books. I'd wondered whether that was because the world really did appear to be run by "Hemulens" in the 1970s, and you don't see so many people like that in positions of authority these days. (Or orphanages or brass bands, come to that...)

TooTicky · 25/09/2006 11:52

I think children don't read so many whimsical books these days, which isa shame.

DumbledoresGirl · 25/09/2006 13:49

The fantasy nature of them seems to be the appeal for my ds. (although I am not sure what they are like as I only read one as a child. I remember I thought it was better than I was expecting but not good enough to read all the others which my sister had. Anyway, i don't like fantasy books so are they fantastical or not?)

DG, read them! (Shall I post those trainers? Weekendsare just too hectic atm!)

DumbledoresGirl · 25/09/2006 18:50

Yes please to the trainers! I am despairing of anyone sending me any. Email me [email protected]

Re Moomin books, I would read them if I could get hold of any!

DG I have one or two spare Moomin books somewhere and would happily send them for your ds. Give me a day or two to hunt them out and I will let you know what I have. I love them too and think all children should be forced to read them

DumbledoresGirl · 25/09/2006 19:26

Really? Don't you want them for your own children?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 25/09/2006 19:29

No no these are spares, I have a complete set myself but have some duplicates

I used to buy and sell children's books and as you have seen Moomin books are quite popular - I always pick them up if I see them at book fairs.

It will only be one or two that I have at the moment but I will let you know. If you are only going to buy one I would recommend Comet in Moominland - it is a lot less dark than some of the others, not too impenetrable for young ones, and a cracking good tale. I haven't got a spare copy of that one, I am pretty sure

DumbledoresGirl · 25/09/2006 19:36

Thanks. Let me know what you have. I am going to go round some charity shops looking for any there, and then I will get one or two others new for ds's birthday which is just before Christmas (so always hard to think of enough for him).
