Books about the Highland clearances?

We have just returned from a fabulous holiday on the isle of Mull. The island is littered with the remains of crofts destroyed during the clearances.

I would l love to find out what happened.

Our local library wasn't much help. Any suggestions?

It's not specifically about the Clearances, but Prof Tom Devine's The Scottish Nation is a well-written overview of our history from 1700-2000, including the Clearances.

I was just about to look into this myself. Tom Devine's books look interesting.
Maybe Neil Oliver's History of Scotland? Haven't read but looks good.

James Hunter wrote a number of books about the clearances, including A Dance Called America and othersm. He's an academic but his writing style is very accessible.

We visited Dunrobin Castle last year (the home of the notorious Duke of Sutherland) and I read The Highland Clearances by Eric Richards afterwards. It's a very readable account of what happened, and is also a well-balanced account of what is still an emotional issue. I can thoroughly recommend it.

We studied a play at Drama at school-The cheviot the stag and the black , black oil. It covers the clearances to the Oil Boom in the 70's.

The Highland Clearances by John Prebble is an oldie but a goodie.

Agree with the John pebble book. I bought it after a trip to the islands 30 years ago and still read it again every 5 years or so?

Try Jo Currie's 'Mull: The Island and its People' for a specific history of the Clearances on Mull.
