Just that really.

I fell in love in Zadie Smith's prose, just finished 'On beauty'. In the middle of 'Anna Karenina' now and eyeing up 'A hundred years of solitude' in my handbag.

Interested in books that you would recommend, as this summery weather makes me want to curl up in a hammock and read, read, read..(don't have a hammock just yet so a beanbag has to do for now).

MizK, I love Gillian Flynn.

If you make it through Sharp Objects, I would recommend "Dark Places". Gripping and, as usual, brilliantly written.

I am reading "We are Called to Rise " by Laura McBride

really liking it. Ordinary people with ordinary lives living in Las Vegas which makes it intriguing from the start

Rainbow I see what you mean about the ending of NW, but it is her style it seems, 'On beauty' could end in a muchmore satisfying way but she almost wants you to live on with the characters in your head, still struggling with their choices. It's got its charm I guess, I am still thinking of all the possibilities for all the characters and like them all the more for it.

Thank you for all the suggestions, my to read list keeps growing.

AIBU is my fav board, sorry if I offended anyone by posting here

I loved Gone Girl but hated both central characters, which always causes me consternation!

I'm in between books at the moment, but the last 2 I read were The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving (a weepie- if you liked the silver linings playbook this is similar) and Americannah which is amazing - written by the same person as half a yellow sun and sort of like on beauty- american college life, that sort of thing. Other amazing books I've read are What is the What and The Madonnas of Leningrad. What is the what is about the Sudan, and Madonnas is about the aeige of Leningrad- and Alzheimer's. All highly teccomended!

Thanks rhonda, will do (though may need a break between them - her books do play on the mind at night!)

scottishmummy I really enjoyed We are all completely beside ourselves, not at all what I would usually read but genuinely thought provoking and moving.

I did not like either character in Gone Girl

I did love the out of the blue change in direction for one felt it really hit on something that is happening in our society. shall say no more do not want to spoil it for others

Just finished 'Who's That Girl?' by Alexandra Potter.

Chick-lit but also has some kewl stuff about time travell.

Before that I was reading numerous textbooks on bullying and narcissism and needed something light!

Mighg read some of her other books next.

Also have a copy of Sybil cominh in the post.

SuburbanRhonda · 27/07/2014 23:28

Oh no, not "Sybil" as in the character played by Sally Field in the film? I could barely watch the film.

bullshit The jack caffrey books get better as you go through the series- less sensationalist and more character driven (although still fairly gory). Mo hayders writing definitely improves IMO.

buffy just bought americanah for my kindle for £1.99- thanks for the recommendation (loved half a yellow sun).

Sybil as in the true story of the woman with multiple personality disorder.

That kind of thing really interests me.

No idea if there's a film.

The book people had a great deal on the complete Colin Dexter so am gently working my way through them, interspersed with others as I go! Morse is great Grin

My book club book is Lord of the Flies which I just can't seem to get into - and I'll read anything..

Kate Atkinson's Life after Life was my favourite this year. Started re reading it as soon as I'd finished. Was itching to read Donna Tartt's Goldfinch, didn't love it. (I'm in the minority there, everyone else I know who read it adored it.) I usually really enjoy Amy Tan's novels, but nearly chucked The Valley of Amazement out the window. Was lucky enough to read We Are All completely Beside Ourselves before seeing any spoilers!
About to revisit The Blind Assassin, been a while since I read it and remember loving it.

I read The Goldfinch and *A Tale for the Time Being" on holiday and loved them both.

I am currently reading The Luminaries but hating it. Not my thing at all, but it's our book group book so I've got to get through it. Sad

Dance to the music of time, 12 (!) books by Anthony Powell following a fictional version of his life from the 20's onwards - better if you have a kindle 4 vols of 3 books

Good apart from when his poshness gets a bit too much (eg. he and most of his friends see no problem in refusing to be anything but an officer in the war)

Best quote something like "parents are such a disappointment to a child, after such a good beginning they go rapidly downhill"

Currently reading confessions of a policeman. Also have a street cat named tom to read and get a grip self help book which is hilarious.

Also currently on Goldfinch (got about 30 pages in before I realised the main character is a boy) but I am enjoying it.
Just read The Husband's secret which I really enjoyed and the Rosie Project which was a good read but had a very simplistic idea of Aspies.

Recently read and enjoyed The Goldfinch, The Fault in Our Stars and She's Come Undone.

Currently reading The Luminaries. I'm 34% in and it's good so far.

Just finished LIsa Jewell's The Third Wife - very good. Just started Sheila O'Flanagan's If You Were Me. Other books I've read recently include Carole Matthews' A Place to Call Home - which was fab, Erica James' Summer at the Lake - also fab and another one by Erica James called Tell it to the Skies - which was brilliant.
