Try Tom Rob Smith. Child 44 is really good although the others in the trilogy go downhill sadly. But Child 44 stands on its own and is well worth a read.

Will check him out.

lots of suggestions here

hilariousinhindsight Most of James Patterson's most recent books are co-written (that's how he manages to publish 10 a year); it'd probably be worth checking out his co-writers' books. I know David Ellis and Andrew Gross are both popular in their own right, not sure about the others.

Jo Nesbo, any of the Harry Hole series.

Karen Slaughter

Ian Rankin's non-Rebus books tend to be of the thriller type and they're quite good.

Mark Billingham is great, although his books are often spun more slowly than the authors listed above.

Val McDermid, Karen Rose, Peter Robinson, Michael Connolly.
