juneybean · 30/12/2013 11:19

Hopefully nobody minds me starting this thread.

The idea is to read 50 books in 2014 (or more as many people have achieved this year!)

Please also check out our group on Goodreads if you're stuck for ideas of what books to read!

Right - I finished The Ocean at the End of the Lane, before going to bed last night/ this morning. So now I can start 2014 with a new book and get off to a good start. Not sure what to read though!

PeasandCucumbers · 01/01/2014 14:31

I'm in! I also lurked on 2013 thread and got lots of suggestions from that and other threads on here. I was aiming for 40 books before my 40th birthday (Sun!!) but didn't make it as I lost momentum after the summer hols so am going to aim for 40 books whilst 40 and see if I manage it this year.

Got The Goldfinch & Stoner from SIL for Christmas so have just started Goldfinch. Only about 60 pages in so far. Also my choice for my book club this month is The Poison Tree by Erin Kelly so I need to read that before 24th too.

CheckpointCharlie · 01/01/2014 14:36

Could I join too? How does it work, do we just post how many we have read and have a chat about it!?

Have a juicy amazon delivery coming in the next day or two!

TheBunsOfPanettone · 01/01/2014 17:15

I'd like to join please!

I started reading A Pirate of Exquisite Mind, a biography of a C17 explorer buccaneer a few days ago but thanks to Christmas, New Year etc. I'm only one chapter in, so if no-one objects I'd like it to be my first book of 2014.

I'm intrigued by Jo Baker's Longbourn, which I think someone else mentioned earlier on the thread and others on my tbr include Inconvenient People, about fraudulent C19 incarcerations of sane people in mental hospitals and The Ocean at the End of the Lane - think I'll have to wait for it to be released in paperback, in three months time.

louloutheshamed · 01/01/2014 17:30

Can I join please?

I managed 32 in 2013 but it was quite a bust year in which I was working ft, studying and gave birth to dc2!

I am part way through Stoner and finding it oddly captivating. So that will be #1.

ChillieJeanie · 01/01/2014 17:39

I will feel a bit of a cheat since I've only got about 100 pages to go, but my first finished book of the year will be The Secret History of the World by Jonathan Black. It's basically looking at the whole of history, from the formation of the world up to the present day, through the eyes of the various esoteric traditions that exist, including Greek and Roman philosophers (Plato and Atlantis, etc), the Knights Templar, Rosicrucians, religious beliefs (Jewish, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu, Zoroastrian, and others all get a look in), etc. Really well researched and written, it must have been a mammoth undertaking. It is written straight and as an alternative to the scientific materialism which is our current way of viewing the world, but the author does make clear it is not necessarily to be taken seriously as history.

googlenut · 01/01/2014 17:46

I'm in too. Have set reading 50 books as one of my goals for this year.

hackmum · 01/01/2014 18:09

I managed 60 in 2013 but I didn't list them all on the thread, as I honestly thought it would be too boring for everyone else.

My first one in 2014 is a book of essays by Janet Malcolm, which I'm enjoying.

LonelyGoatherd · 01/01/2014 18:17

Marking place, then off find my first book!

verona · 01/01/2014 18:49

I'd like to join. Only managed 28 last year and that included the books I read to DCs at bedtime. Am aiming for 40. Starting well as I've read a book today - Body 115- about the King's Cross fire

LonelyGoatherd · 01/01/2014 19:33

Have downloaded Mansfield Park and joined GR. [excited]

greenhill · 01/01/2014 19:38

hackmum please don't ever think that listing your reading choices would have been boring for anyone else Smile.

It is always interesting to see what other readers choose, whether they go for high or middle brow or thrillers, door stopping family sagas or SF short stories. All choices are interesting, especially as reading habits tell you a lot about posters personalities Wink

CharlieAlphaKiloEcho · 01/01/2014 20:10

I've just joined your book club and signed up for the magic square challenge.

I'll aim for 45 books this year I think. I've just joined an actual real life book club too so I'm looking forward to branching out and reading different things this year.

AnneWentworth · 01/01/2014 21:22

Just a recap as a few new joiners have asked:

  • there are no rules
  • just list or list with a bit if a review
  • every time you finish or sporadically
  • books to DC included by some and not by others
  • a few people listed audio books

In short it is entirely up to you.

I joined the Goodreads challenge and selected three rows as I am doing a separate challenge with friends too but I do enjoy the way the challenges make me pick different things.

Off for an early night with Mr. Darcy!

claretandamberforever · 01/01/2014 21:24
  1. "The Neighbour" by Lisa Gardner www.amazon.co.uk/The-Neighbour-Lisa-Gardner-ebook/dp/B008FQ1UXW/ref=sr_1_6?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1388611384&sr=1-6&keywords=lisa+gardner

Brilliant - kept me guessing right until the end. Managed to read this in a whole day (did nothing else today, mind). Back to work tomorrow so reading consumption will be lessened.

QueenofLouisiana · 01/01/2014 22:22

Signed up to the magic square challenge- I need to broaden my horizons I think!

Wolfcub · 01/01/2014 23:11

Book # 1 finished, The Highs and lows of a marathon addict. The first nine or ten chapters were really good, after which the writing just seemed to get a bit lazy.

highlandcoo · 02/01/2014 00:13

I'm in!

I read 73 books in 2013, but dropped off in posting details in the second half of the year. Will do better this year and aim to update list every five books or so with short reviews of the stuff I enjoy most.

Last year I read loosely in themes - fiction by Japanese authors, fiction based in Plantagenet/Tudor era, and an attempt to read everything Iain (M) Banks wrote .. which didn't quite come off due to his sci-fi not turning out to be my sort of thing. Interspersed by a few crime series.

This year I'm approaching my reading differently. Aiming to work my way through as many of the unread books on my shelves and on my kindle as I can. Will alternate between contemporary fiction and classics and will include some rereads in the latter category .. something I haven't done for years and which I'm really looking forward to.

Aiming to spend less time online and more time reading and to reach 100 this year Smile

MysteriousHamster · 02/01/2014 00:20

I love the Book Vipers. Really good book selections. I am a member of Book Vipers and some slightly geekier groups, but the Vipers have the best discussions :)

Personally I include audiobooks, but not children's books as my son is only on picture books at the mo :)

I mostly don't bother with reviews - I just score. I like to keep track of what I'm reading and get recommendations. I occasionally write a proper review when I have the energy, but it's rare!

TheFabulousIdiot · 02/01/2014 00:39

I'm in, I just deregistered from Facebook so will have loads of time. Currently reading Morrissey's Autobiography.

TheFabulousIdiot · 02/01/2014 00:39

Does it have to be just fiction?

LEMoncehadacatcalledSANTA · 02/01/2014 00:50

Can I join please? 50 seems alot but I can try. I need a recommendation just finished prisoner of heAven really liked it

CoffeeRevel · 02/01/2014 00:55

I'm in! I'll be looking for recommendations as I've run out of books in my to read pile. I'm fairly unfussy, because I tend to read a lot. I love urban fantasy, paranormal romance, trashy and not so trashy.

NoBusinessLikeSnowBusiness · 02/01/2014 01:22

Hello. I'm in. I read loads before dc but bloody internet and phone seem to have taken over. This is just what I need. Now need to find first book. (Hurry up with sequel, Hilary Mantel).

RabbitPies · 02/01/2014 01:30

I'd love to join in. I love to read but for various reasons I haven't read much at all over the past few months and I'd love to get back into the habit.

I have a big pile of books, and hundreds of Ebooks to work my way through,so I'll try to get through at least 50 of those.
