Hopefully nobody minds me starting this thread.

The idea is to read 50 books in 2014 (or more as many people have achieved this year!)

Please also check out our group on Goodreads if you're stuck for ideas of what books to read!

I'm in! Though probably aiming for a more modest 25

Goldensunnydays81 · 02/01/2014 11:03

I have just started on my first book - I am Malala which I am finding

Goldensunnydays81 · 02/01/2014 11:06

Oops posted too soon. I am finding it interesting so far, I want to broaden my book reading range this year as I read to many chick lit ones, where as before I would read a whole variety of books.

MrsCosmopilite · 02/01/2014 11:21

Ooh great! Will be signing up for the book vipers later.

Just finished off a book today. It failed to make up the numbers for last year's target.

Britty Britty Bang Bang - Hugh Dennis. It was quite interesting in places, quite amusing in places. Easy to read. Not bad for the first book of the year.

funambulist · 02/01/2014 14:03

1 Harvest by Jim Crace

Yay! First book of 2014 finished.

This book was short listed for the 2013 Booker Prize. It was beautifully written but still a relatively easy and quick read. DS1, who is keen on history, thought it was set in the 17th century. The action all takes place during one week in an English village at harvest time. The book is clearly well researched with a wealth of historical and agricultural detail. At the start of the story a train of events is set in motion which will alter the lives of the villagers utterly as the changes of the world outside the village begin to disturb their peace.

gailforce1 · 02/01/2014 15:10

funambulist glad you liked Harvest as it is the AM Book club choice for March and I am now looking forward to reading it !

AntiJamDidi · 02/01/2014 16:07

coffee have you read the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs? I think there's about 7 of them now and I thoroughly enjoyed them. Also the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews is good urban fantasy. I like anything by Keri Arthur, Kelley Armstrong or Laurell k Hamilton. If you like urban fantasy and paranormal romance I'd love some recommendations too seeing as I've got amazon vouchers burning a hole in my email inbox from Christmas. Grin

juneybean · 02/01/2014 16:20

TheFabulousIdiot a book is a book, whether fiction or non-fiction, read whatever you enjoy Grin

Sorry - meant MN book club!!

Brockle · 02/01/2014 18:27

OK boys and girls this is my year. Last year was a washout due to newborn ds3 but this year is my year plus I just bought a shed load of books on the kindle and I need to justify it Book 1 - Gone Girl - very enjoyable easy read. Book 2 - The Secret Keeper - Kate Morton - enjoying but worried I have guessed the ending which would be a disappointment.

CallingAllEngels · 02/01/2014 19:02

Starting off with this today. I only just managed ot last year as did no reading between October and Christmas after mc and DS developing sleep problems.

Am determined to read the books I have on my shelf and my kindle before I buy or borrow anymore...that'll get me up to 20 at least!

Looking forward seeing what you're all reading.

WednesdayNext · 02/01/2014 19:05
  1. The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. Loved this. I was highly disappointed when it finished. I read it in 2 sittings. I'll definitely re-read this at summer point.

I'm in again this year - managed 36 last year and my target for 2014 is to just better that.

  1. Bizarre London - David Long 7.5/10

Nice easy non-fiction book to start the year and I do love reading about London's history, trivial or otherwise.

CheckpointCharlie · 02/01/2014 20:10

Thanks annewentworth for explaining. (Hi beer Grin )

I am trying to read Swan Song by Robert Edric but am not enthralled yet.

Am still awaiting my awesome amazon delivery......!

strawberrypenguin · 02/01/2014 20:16

Book 1 done! (Actually its a little bit of a cheat as its a novella) Night of Cake and Puppets by Liani Taylor. Lovely magical little love story.

whitewineandchocolate · 02/01/2014 22:19

I'm joining as well please, after lurking on the 2013 thread. I love reading but spend too much time mumsnetting & not enough reading! I already have a kindle and received a new paper white one for Christmas. I'm almost finished with CJ Sansom's Dark Fire (second in the Shardlake series) which I am really enjoying. It is, however, quite long so I'm not off to a very good start!

wiltingfast · 02/01/2014 22:43

Wow, I'm in! Have joined the book vipers too, looks great Grin!

Doubt I'll hit 50 but no harm trying, have a book or three constantly on the go but am slower than I used to be.

Am in middle of no 1 Carrion Comfort by Dan Sims which I saw recommended on here recently and am really enjoying, have 3 waiting for me maybe more on kindle and 6 library books waiting too so that should keep me going!

DuchessofMalfi · 03/01/2014 05:52

First book finished - The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith/J K Rowling. Cheating a little because I did start it in December Grin. Thoroughly enjoyable page-turner. She knows how to tell a good story. Kept me guessing right to the end.

Isthiscorrect · 03/01/2014 09:27

Count me in in. I did try to join in last year but just forgot to count or update so no idea what I managed eventually. Already I'm off to a good start I've finished 2 books and almost a third.
#1 Like chocolate like water. Loved it.
#2 Thieves like us, a YA book, quite fun, bit of a gallop a minute (in my defence I am a librarian)
Currently reading Cold Comfort Farm, it's ok, not as enthralling as the blurb would have me believe and You had me at hello, bit chick lit with a possibly obvious ending. We shall see.

Lizzylou · 03/01/2014 09:34

1st book read, Perfect by Rachel Joyce. Really enjoyed it, bit predictable but some excellent characters, was crying at the end. Bleaker than Harold Fry, with some truly unlikeable characters and all the better for it.
Nect read is Life after Life.

AnneWentworth · 03/01/2014 09:35

I read Cold Comfort Farm last year. It was very funny in parts but I agree the hype is bigger. Stella Gibbons daughter turned up to our book club when we discussed it.

GinOnTwoWheels · 03/01/2014 12:46

Lurked on this thread last year and am going to join this year. I my first book of 2014 is The Girl Who Played with Fire (second Steigg Larsson one) having read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo over Christmas (strictly I started TGWPWF on NYE, but I'm sure no-one is going to argue on that little technicality). I really like both books, which are nothing like what I imagined.

Am hoping to read at least 50 this year. My best guess for last year would be about 35, which is poor considering at least 10 of these would have been on holiday. Need stop pissing about on here too much and read more instead.

I have about 200 unread books on my kindle that I need to make a dent in and for the last few months have only 'allowed' myself to buy books if they come up on my ereaderiq watch list for about £1.50 or less, but I still bought a fair few books to the extent that the virtual pile grows faster than it shrinks Grin.

I love my kindle so much, but I think one thing it lacks is a 'book journal'. It would be so easy for the software to keep a list of the books you have read, with dates started and finished (someone is going to tell me it can do this now aren't they?).

I read 56 last year, I don't know what the aim is for this year yet.

I'm currently reading Bad Science by Ben Goldacre which is okay.
