50 Book Challenge 2014

juneybean · 30/12/2013 11:19

Hopefully nobody minds me starting this thread.

The idea is to read 50 books in 2014 (or more as many people have achieved this year!)

Please also check out our group on Goodreads if you're stuck for ideas of what books to read!

I'm going to lurk. I do read a lot, at least a book a week I'd say. Anyone else enjoy the new Donna Tartt?

AnneWentworth · 31/12/2013 20:41

Remus I will let you know how we get on.

Can I join even though I know I won't make 50? I promise to do my best though!

I have DC3 due in May, but I'd like to do well before that, and manage what I can afterwards.

Cheboludo · 31/12/2013 22:00

I'd love to join too. Lurked on the other thread since starting maternity leave in the summer. I think I read between 40-50 in 2013 but forgot to note all of them so can't be sure. I'm aiming for at least 50 this year - if I can ever persuade my 6mtg old that sleeping is a great idea.

poncedeleon · 31/12/2013 22:59

Would love to join in - only lurked on the 2013 thread but managed 61 books! This year I need to read "better" books - in 2013 I gave all the books that I read a none, one or two star rating. I realised that I always enjoyed the better books, and the trashier ones were a bit hit and miss. I have Far From the Tree which I can't wait to read, but it is a humdinger at 700 pages so I may take all of January to get through it! Can't wait for other people's recommendations.

geologygirl · 01/01/2014 02:00

Im definitely in! Will sign up to Goodreads and kick off with Mansfield Park. Looking forward to getting reading again.....

TheArticFunky · 01/01/2014 02:03

I would like to join too although I don't know how I will find the time.

MitsuruSenpai · 01/01/2014 06:50

I'm in! Lurked on last year's thread and picked up a LOT of new books as a result. Going for 25 though as with an 18 month old DS and another on the way in the summer I think my reading time's going to be pretty limited this year! Also, I tend to gravitate towards great big doorstop books which can take me a good while to wade through. Started Love Minus Eighty yesterday so counting that as my #1.

couch25cakes · 01/01/2014 09:10

Duchess- I'm enjoying it so far, I like that the plots in her books start straight away without too much faffing about.

AntiJamDidi · 01/01/2014 09:26

I'm in. I was on last year's thread but forgot to post my books very often. I read 71 books last year including some really good books that I would never have chosen if it wasn't for this thread and the Book Vipers group.

  1. The detective's daughter - Lesley Thomson
I started this last week and finished it this morning so Goodreads is counting it as my first book of this year.
milti · 01/01/2014 09:29
  1. Merry Christmas Alex Cross, by James Patterson
MercuryRising · 01/01/2014 09:46
  1. Mad About The Boy by Helen Fielding - a very easy read which I enjoyed a lot more than I expected to. Going to start Life After Life by Kate Atkinson.

Beer re your goodreads password- have you tried logging in with a Facebook account? You can do that and it means you don't need to remember your goodreads one! I do it all the time.

claretandamberforever · 01/01/2014 10:45

Yep, I'll go for a total of 50 books in 2014 as sometimes I am voracious and others I have reader's block. I have done a fair bit of reading over the Christmas holidays though.

Book number 1: I'm counting this as the first book of 2014 because it was well after midnight that I finished it. "The Confusion of Karen Carpenter" by Jonathan Harvey www.amazon.co.uk/Confusion-Karen-Carpenter-Jonathan-Harvey-ebook/dp/B00CRYTXZU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388572578&sr=8-1&keywords=the+confusion+of+karen+carpenter

I think I got this for 99p in the sale or maybe Kindle Daily Deal but I note the price has gone up to £3.66. Anyway I really enjoyed it, totally exceeded my expectations, it was funny, it was sad, but it was beautifully written. If you are into chick-lit you will not be disappointed if you download this.

However I have to say, I always hate finishing a fantastic book, as how do you choose what to follow it with....

I note some of you are reading "Mad about the Boy" - I really enjoyed this even though nothing much happened. It was like catching up with an old friend however I have mortified that the picture in my head of Bridget is not Renee Zellweger but she's morphed into Katie Bloody Hopkins! EEEK.

I've also joined the goodreads group and will be attempting the Magic Square challenge, which looks awesome!

HarpyFishwifeTwat · 01/01/2014 12:45

I'm in. A disappointing 37 last year. Will do better this year - if I stop fannying around on internet and actually read.

DBXmum · 01/01/2014 13:20

I'd like to be in please. I'm a MN lurker but every book I read last year had me wishing I'd joined! Looking forward to some great suggestions. Is there a Facebook group by the way?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2014 13:22

What is the Magic Squares challenge? I'm registered on Good Reads but can't remember my password.

juneybean · 01/01/2014 13:41

Magic square is a bit like bingo, one of the book vipers mods created a grid with different books to read for example a book from a genre you avoid. I'll try and link to the image when I get home from work but do try and join us on the group.

Thanks. Have managed to remember my password. How do I join the group?

juneybean · 01/01/2014 13:48

Click on the link in my OP and there should be an option to join. :D
