50 Book Challenge 2014

juneybean · 30/12/2013 11:19

Hopefully nobody minds me starting this thread.

The idea is to read 50 books in 2014 (or more as many people have achieved this year!)

Please also check out our group on Goodreads if you're stuck for ideas of what books to read!

I'm in! I live reading but with four children I rarely get the time. My lovely inlaws however bought me a kindle for Christmas and I've read 2 books since Boxing Day! The kindle is so convenient but I miss that feel and smell of a real book (a bit odd I know!)

worriedabout · 30/12/2013 22:47

About to read the
misunderstanding by Irene
nemirovsmy. I love her writing. In for
the spirit of the read.

TheRaniOfYawn · 30/12/2013 22:59

I'll jump in for 2014. I've mostly been taking fanfic on my phone for the past couple of years, so I'll do my best to read some actual published stuff too.

DumSpiroSperHoHoHo · 30/12/2013 23:16

I'm going to have another go this year - will check out the link in a mo.

I had good intentions this year, but got stuck for months on Madame Bovary, then tied up with work/courses and before I knew it it was Christmas Confused .

Have already read one of my Christmas books (The Woman Who Went To Bed For A Year), and have another 3 to be cracking on with - Mad About The Boy, Inferno & And The Mountains Echoed.

Have a couple of chapters of The Great Gatsby to finish, and also want to re-read all the Adrian Mole books (do re-reads count?)

This is my kind of thread :)

Am starting with Inconvenient People by Sarah Wise, then I already have The Queens Man by Sharon Penman lined up for my second.

DumSpiroSperHoHoHo · 30/12/2013 23:33

SeaDevils - you've just reminded me I need to have another crack at the Sunne in Splendour at some point this year!

Signed up to Good Reads and downloaded Mansfield Park so am ready to go Grin .

MercuryRising · 30/12/2013 23:42

I would like to join again. I posted in the beginning of 2013 and then dropped off again. Im reading Mad About The Boy at the moment, so that will be my first one of 2014. I would love to get back into a regular reading habit instead of just spending hours online.

Cherrypi · 31/12/2013 08:39

Can I join in please. I want to read more as it is one of the few things that relaxes me and I desperately need to do that.

AnneWentworth · 31/12/2013 09:26

Remus- We are reading 'The ComingRace' by Bulwer somebody. Or somebody Bulwer. My understanding is it is some sort of 19th century sci fi. I have absolutely no idea if it is or if it is a classic but thought I would pass it on.

lookatmycameltoe · 31/12/2013 09:43

I'm in.

I read between 100-150 books a year so set my target for 2014 at 120.
I read anything and everything. Just finishing off (and loving) Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche and What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty. They will be my last books of 2013.

TheRaniOfYawn · 31/12/2013 12:18

Currently reading The Disorderly Knights by Dorothy Dunnett. Once I've finished that, I've got a backlog of around 19 books to read on my nook.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2013 12:30

Thanks, Anne. That looks interesting. Are you reading it for a book group? Will you let me know how people get on with it please?

Dwerf · 31/12/2013 12:33

I'm in. Can i hav some clarification of the rules? Particularly whether the two books I'm currently reading count, and whether re-reads count (if not, i shall have to buy another 45 books this year, like that's a problem )

PerksOfBeingNorthern · 31/12/2013 12:50

Managed over 100 last year, will be lucky to manage that this year but have loads of recommendations from last year's thread lined up ready to go.
Happy New Year to all and Happy Reading 2014!! Grin

Wolfcub · 31/12/2013 15:18

I've just finished The Hitman's Guide to House Cleaning so I'm ready to start my first book for 2014, I can't decide what to read though

couch25cakes · 31/12/2013 17:14

Im in, managed about 35 last year. I started the JK Rowling / Robert Galbraith today so that'll be number one.

DuchessofMalfi · 31/12/2013 17:45

I'm reading that atm too, couch :) Really enjoying it so far. What do you think?

tinierclanger · 31/12/2013 17:50

I'll join! Do we just post as we go? I'm currently reading All Over Creation by Ruth Ozeki.

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 31/12/2013 18:01

There aren't really any rules Dwerf!

Some people post after each book they've finished, others post in batches. Some people leave a review/synopsis of each book, others don't.
Some people include short stories or books they have read to their children at bedtime, others don't.
It's really quite free and easy. Grin
We just talk about books we like and books we don't. But be warned, you WILL leave this thread with more books in your "to be read" pile than you came in with!!

gailforce1 · 31/12/2013 18:01

Starting with Mansfield Park with Goodreads Book Viper group which I am looking forward to as I haven't read any Austin for ages.
So many from last years list that I didn't read and already looking forward to some due to be published in2014 including:
Jan - The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd(Tinder Press)
Feb - The Lemon Grove by Helen Walsh and Mrs Hemingway by Naomi Wood (Picador)
March - Frog Music by Emma Donoghue (Picador)
Sept - The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters (Virago)
Must place library reservations for them!

lostdomain · 31/12/2013 18:02

Dilidali thanks, I might start with Harold Fry then. I LOVED 100 yr old man and it sounds like there are some similarities.

Remus - have you read classic sci-fi author Ray Bradbury - massively under-rated. I had a bit of a John Wynham spell last year. Very easy to read and interesting. Esp the Chrysalids.

Goldensunnydays81 · 31/12/2013 18:19

Can I join too please, really haven't read as much as I wanted to this year!! But am determined to next year! I love reading and really don't know why I haven't this year, so am definitely up for reading 50
Books this year!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2013 18:20

Read all JW's I think and some Bradbury's. Thanks for the reminder - will deffo read more RB.

BakedWellTart · 31/12/2013 20:35

I lurked last year but am up for it this year. I'll aim for 25 though as I'm quite partial to a door stopper.

A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth will be the first. It's been on my bookshelves for years and am finally going to read all 1504 pages of it on my kindle
